YANBU INDUSTRIAL COLLEGE
COURSE SYLLABUS
Department, Number and Title of Course:
Department: Chemical Engineering Technology
Course Number: CHET 106
Course Title: Process Heat Transfer
Designation: Required Course
Course (Catalog) Description:
This course introduces the student to the basics of heat flow phenomena. Basic laws and
mechanisms of steady state heat transfer are introduced along with their applications to
process equipments including heat exchangers, boilers and condensers. Operating and
maintenance problems in heat exchangers are being discussed. Laboratory experiments
will support the theoretical classes.
Prerequisite(s): CHET 101, CHET 105, MATH 101
Co-requisite(s): PHYS 101
Textbook:
CHET 106: Process Heat Transfer Information Sheet.
CHET 106: Process Heat Transfer Laboratory Manual.

Course Learning Outcomes / Expected Performance Criteria:
The expected outcome is that the students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate basic understanding of the concept of heat transfer mechanisms
at steady state and define all parameters related to heat flow.
2. Demonstrate ability to perform calculations related to conduction, convection
and radiation in different geometric shapes.
3. Apply knowledge of mathematics and science to problems in heat transfer
4. Describe the features of the most common types of heat exchangers.
5. Describe the operating and maintenance problems in heat exchangers.
6. Describe how an operator prepares and monitoring the plant for/during
maintenance.
7. Conduct experiments and prepare tables and graphs that effectively present
experimental results.
Topics Covered:
Concept of Heat Transfer and their Laws
Mechanism and Application for each Heat transfer Mode .
The main Types of Heat Exchangers and their Application.
Shell-and Tubes Features and Configurations.
Operating and Maintenance Problems in Heat Exchangers.
Class Schedule: 2 lectures per week, 50 minutes each
Laboratory Schedule: 1 session per week, 3 hours each
Contribution of Course to Meeting the Requirements of Criterion 5:
This course is a part of the Chemical Engineering Component of the curriculum. The
students are exposed to study of heat transfer concept and the mechanisms for each
mode. Students also recognizes the main types of heat exchangers and learn the process
and features for each one. They also recognizes the operation, maintains, difficulties and
problems for the heat exchanger and their effect on heat transfer process.
