Functional Analysis Protocol

This document outlines a functional analysis protocol to assess the target behaviors of aggression and verbal protest exhibited by John Frank. The protocol will be conducted in John's home playroom by his parent over 5 sessions. Each session consists of control, tangible, demand, alone, and attention conditions that are 5 minutes each. The parent will implement conditions using antecedent-behavior-consequence procedures and collect data on frequency sheets to determine the function of John's problem behaviors. The goal is to identify the environmental factors maintaining his aggression and protest so an appropriate intervention can be developed.

Functional Analysis Protocol

Analogue
Client: John Frank
Program Supervisor: Aicha
Date: May 12th 2021

Setting
 Controlled environment
 Therapy room has one table, 2 chairs, toy shelf, a bean bag and a two way mirror.

Implementers
 Instructor therapist will implement the conditions.
 Lead therapist will be behind the two way mirror to observe and collect data.

Target Behavior
 Aggression:
o Hitting: is observed when John uses his hands with force against therapist.
o Pinching: when John uses his fingers to grasp on others with force.
o Punching: John uses his fist with force against others
o Scratching: John moves his nails against others with force.
o Biting: John uses his teeth against others body.
o Destruction: John throws items at others.
 Verbal Protest:
o Swearing: any inappropriate vocalizations that are intentionally inappropriate.
o Whining: refusal to comply with demand.

Conditions and Protocol

 Demand:
o When it is time to run a table session give the warning demand to put toys away
and work is in 2 minutes; “In two minutes we will clean then work”
o Behavior: Student begins to use aggression and verbally protest the demand.
o Consequence:
 Therapist waits for 10 seconds for appropriate response
 If there is no response, the therapist will repeat demand with prompt
 If there is no response then therapist will use physical prompt.
 If client follows through then positive reinforcement is given
 If client does not follow through then ignore attention seeking behavior
and withhold attention until he begins to show appropriate behavior
o Duration: 5 minutes
o Termination Criteria: If John displays threatening self-injurious behaviors, the
session is to be discontinued.
 Attention

o Antecedent: Therapist tells client to play with toys
o Behavior: Client begins to throw items across the room and watches for therapist
reaction. Client then begins to hit the therapist. Client watches for verbal, eye
contact and gestures from therapist.
o Consequence: Therapist delivers attention when client is engaging in target
behaviors using verbal cue.
o Record behavior outcome on sheet.
 Alone:
o The client is in the room without reinforcers/toys
o Therapist stands behind two way mirror
o Client is observed to assess whether self-stimulation is maintaining the target
behaviors.
o Duration: 5 minutes
o Termination: if client exhibits extreme self-injurious behaviors
 Tangible:
o Therapist removes reinforcer/ preferred item
o Observe for target behavior
o Tangible is given
o Duration: 5 minutes
o Termination: if client exhibits extreme self-injurious behaviors
 Play condition:
o Remove EO’s ( Tangible, attention, etc.)
 Therapist and client are present with toys
 Therapist is not directly engaging with client
 No demands are given and therapist gives positive reinforcement through
praise on appropriate behavior every 30 seconds.
 Problem behavior is ignored.
o Duration: 5 minutes
o Termination: if client exhibits extreme self-injurious behaviors
