In modern healthcare, it is crucial for individuals to adhere to their doctor's prescribed
medication regimens and actively monitor their health, particularly in bustling areas like
Sampaloc, Manila, where individuals are constantly on the go and may not have time to visit
their doctor regularly. Adherence in medication is defined by World Health Organization as the
extent to which a person’s behavior complies with the prescribed treatment by medical
professional (Jimmy & Jose, 2020). In today’s world, medication compliance is used for
obediently following the schedule of the prescribed medicine with respect to its timing, dosage,
and its frequency. The medications include liquid, tablet, capsules, drops, inhalers, injections,
and implants. According to Mohiuddin (2022), Medication adherence generally means whether
or not patients continue to take a given prescription after receiving it, as well as whether they
take the medication as recommended. In connection of health monitoring behavior to medical
compliance is significant ensuring that adult residents in this community follow their medication
routines and practice effective health monitoring has never been more important. Various factors,
including financial constraints, health awareness, and personal beliefs, influence these healthcare
behaviors. According to Brown & Bussell (2011), when prescribing complex drug regimens,
failing to effectively explain the advantages and hazards of a prescription, or neglecting to take
into account the patient's financial burden, doctors frequently fail to address the medical
nonadherence of their patients.
The primary focus of this research is to comprehensively explore and understand the
dynamics of compliance with medication regimens and health monitoring behaviors among
adults residing in a barangay in Sampaloc, Manila. The intricate web of health-related behaviors
within this specific community is influenced by a combination of socioeconomic class, cultural
beliefs, and access to healthcare services. It is commonly known that people with lower
socioeconomic position frequently encounter more obstacles while trying to receive healthcare
services and in cultural beliefs varied cultural backgrounds may have varied views about disease,
treatment, and healthcare professionals, which can have an impact on how people choose to
receive healthcare (Chelogoi et al., 2020). As the healthcare landscape in the Philippines
undergoes transformation, it becomes increasingly vital to grasp the patterns and determinants of
medication compliance and health monitoring among the adult population.
This research delves into the day-to-day health-related choices and actions of adult
residents in Sampaloc and aims to investigate aspects such as their access to healthcare
resources, socioeconomic status, their understanding of their health conditions, and how cultural
beliefs shape their approach to health and illness.
The healthcare environment in the Philippines carries a dual burden of infectious and
non-communicable diseases. Boutayeb (2010), These nations are subject to a double burden of
infectious and noncommunicable diseases, with worrying trends due to poverty, wars, and
conflicts, certain conditions, such as TB, are both causes and effects of poverty. Addressing these
challenges necessitates a comprehensive approach that highlights patient empowerment and
education. In urban areas like Sampaloc, healthcare systems are grappling with the evolving
healthcare needs of their residents.
This study's primary objective is to uncover the intricacies of medication adherence and
health monitoring practices, encompassing self-assessment and regular check-ups. By
comprehending the interplay between these two dimensions of healthcare, we can provide a
holistic understanding of health-related behaviors in this diverse and dynamic community.
The insights derived from this research can potentially offer substantial benefits to
healthcare practitioners, policymakers, and community leaders. The findings will guide the
development of targeted interventions, educational programs, and healthcare policies designed to
improve medication adherence and promote proactive health monitoring practices among adult
residents in Sampaloc, Manila. Ultimately, tnurshis research forms a foundation for enhanced
healthcare delivery, increased patient engagement, and the overall well-being of the community,
distinguishing itself from the sensitive and multifaceted issues associated with abortion and
pregnancy.
