SECTION-1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This Operation and Maintenance Manual is developed to provide the maintenance personnel with the general overview
of the Fire Protection System designed for ADGNEX Data Center. This Manual is consisting of Hydrant system.

1. Fire Hydrant System

Fire Hydrant are devices connected to water for use in diverting water through the hydrant and into fire
department hoses, apparatus, etc., in order to dispurse the water as needed. The most common type is the
dry barrel hydrant, whose control valve is below the frost line and between the foot piece and the hydrant
barrel. Dry barrel hydrants are also known as “frost proof” hydrants. Another type is the Wet barrel Hydrant,
sometimes used where is no danger of freezing weather. The barrel hydrant usually has a compression
type valve at each outlet. Wet type Fire Hydrant with pumper connection is used in this project.

Main components installed in this system and its functions are as follows:-

 Wet Barrel Fire Hydrant: - Wet Barrel Hydrant is designed to be a trouble free, easy to maintain
hydrant. This manual will provide you with the information needed to properly install and maintain the
fire hydrant and to ensure a long service life. Wet Barrel Hydrant is rated for a working pressure of 250
psi, is UL listed and FM approved, and meets or exceeds the requirements of AWWA C503, Standard
for Wet Barrel Fire Hydrants.

 Isolation Valve: - This is used for Isolation of the system from water supply source for servicing or
maintenance or other reasons that makes control valve put of service. Closing of this valve will eliminate
the fire protection normally provided to the system.

SECTION-2 SCHEDULE OF ROUTINE MAINTENANCE

1. Fire Hydrant System

A Hose is attached to the fire hydrant, then the valve is opened to provide a powerful source of water, on
the order of 350 kPa (50 lbf/in²) (this pressure varies according to region and depends on various factors
including the size and location of the attached water main). This hose can be further attached to a fire
engine, which can then use a powerful pump to boost the water pressure and possibly split it into multiple
streams. The hose may be connected with a threaded connection or a storz connector. Care should be
taken not to open or close a fire hydrant too quickly, as this can create a water hammer which can damage
nearby pipes and equipment.

The water inside a charged hose line causes it to be very heavy and high-water pressure causes it to be
stiff and unable to make a tight turn while pressurized. When a fire hydrant is unobstructed, this is not a
problem, as there is enough room to adequately position the hose.

Most fire hydrant valves are not designed to throttle the water flow; they are designed to be operated full-
on or full-off. The valve arrangement of most dry-barrel hydrants is for the drain valve to be open at anything
other than full operation. Usage at partial-opening can consequently result in considerable flow directly into
the soil surrounding the hydrant, which, over time, can cause severe scouring. A hose with a closed nozzle
valve, or fire truck connection, or closed gate valve is always attached to the hydrant prior to opening the
hydrant's main valve. When a Fire fighter is operating a hydrant, appropriate Personal protective equipment,
such as gloves and a helmet with face shield, are typically worn. High pressure water coursing through a
potentially aging and corroding hydrant could cause a failure, injuring the firefighter operating the hydrant
or bystanders.

Inspection

To ensure their readiness for instantaneous use, it is recommended that Fire Hydrants be inspected and
tested at six-month intervals.

Inspect visually for damaged or missing parts.

Loosen one Nozzle Cap slightly and tighten the others. Open Hydrant fully. Tighten loose Nozzle Cap when
water starts to flow. Remove oil filler plug to check oil level. If oil level is low, fill oil. check all flange
connections for leaks. Turn operate nut to fully CLOSED position.

If water or oil overflowed from oil filler hole, remove bonnet and replace O-rings in both the Bonnet and the
Hold Down Nut. Inspect and clean stem and replace it if corroded or pitted. Check oil level. Replace Bonnet
and test for leaks.

Use Brass sleeve when removing or replacing Bonnet or Hydrant Barrel to protect stem O-rings.

SECTION-2 SCHEDULE OF ROUTINE MAINTENANCE

Remove all Nozzle caps. Clean and lubricate threads.

Examine inside of Barrel to make certain drain valves have completely drained water from barrel. If water
fails to drain from Barrel, it may be caused by one or more of the following conditions:

1. Water table in ground is higher than drains.

2. When Hydrant was installed, coarse gravel was not placed around drains, in locations where ground

has a makeup such that it will not absorb water.

3. Drains are stopped by some foreign material.

4. Failure to leave Cap off of Hydrant to allow air to enter so Barrel will drain.

Annually Wet type Fire Hydrants

Perform the following inspections:

 Check for tightness of hydrant outlets.

 Check for leaks in top of hydrant.
 Check for leaks in gaskets under caps.
 Check for cracks in hydrant barrel.
 Inspect operating nut for wear or rounded corners.
 Inspect nozzle threads for damage.

Tests

Flow tests need to be conducted on all fire hydrant annually, so they can be checked for ease of operation
and proper operation and so tests can be made of the available water supply. The following test should be
conducted at the frequency indicated:

Annually  Flow each hydrant.

INSPECTION
Prior to installation hydrants must be inspected at the
time of delivery to ensure there is no damage related
to shipping and handling. Upon delivery verify
compliance with required specifications to include:
 Correct model hydrant
 Correct operating nut size and shape on stem &
cap
 Correct size outlet nozzles
 Correct inlet flange bolt pattern
The hydrant will arrive with each valve in the closed
position. Each valve stem should be cycled from
closed to full open and back to closed to ensure no
damage occurred during shipment. If the stem is
difficult to operate, repairs are needed.
All external bolts and nuts should be tight.
Each hydrant is shipped with an inlet flange cover in
place. If this cover is damaged or has been removed,
visually inspect the inside of the hydrant from the inlet
flange to ensure no foreign material or debris has
entered the hydrant.
Recover the inlet flange until time of installation. 2SHUDWLQJ6WHP

I. Application and Property Standard
The resilient gate valves covered in this document are designed, manufactured and
tested in accordance with the standard of AWWA C515, for the application in the
field of potable water, water distribution service & feed lines, sewage disposal,
irrigation, and fire protection systems, for delivery of medium including water and
other medium with working temperature between 0℃ and 80℃.
It serves to cut off the medium flow in the piping system, with good sealing property.
The valve is not designed to serve as adjusting valve.
Property Specifications:
Rated Working Pressure 200 PSI, 250 PSI & 300 PSI
Nominal Diameter(DN) 40~600mm
Shell Test 2 times o rated working pressure
Test Pressure
Seal Test (hydraulic) 1.5 times of rated working pressure
Working Temperature 0~80℃
Medium Water and other medium

II. Structure Design & Working Principle

The valve is constructed with wedge gate design and bolted valve gland and
bonnet.

Working principle:
The rotation of the hand wheel drives the stem to open or close the gate to cut off
or allows the medium flow in the piping system. The fully EPDM encapsulated
wedge gate guarantees the well sealing of the valve, making it suitable to be
widely applied in different industries.

IV. Storage, Installation & Maintenance

a) The valve is to be stored in dry cool conditions in the warehouses with good
ventilation. The gate is not to be tightly closed when not under working conditions.
The ends of the valves are to be properly protected with caps to protect the wedge
sealing surface from the intrusion of dirt and other foreign stuff.
b) Valves should be checked regularly when storage for long time.
c) Check the marking and the qualifications before installation of the valve.
d) The valve is designed to work only fully open or closed. It’s not allowed to have it
for service as adjusting valves.
e) When there is failure or mal‐function detected, should shut down the service valves
nearby for checking of the gate valve immediately.
