FAMILY LIFE
Children can learn a lot from doing household chores. Doing chores helps children learn about what they need to do to care
(26) themselves, a home and a family. They learn skills they can use in their adult lives, like preparing meals,
cleaning, organizing and keeping a garden. Being involved in chores also gives children experience of relationship skills
like communicating clearly, negotiating, cooperating and working as a team. When children (27) to family
life, it helps them feel competent and responsible. Even if they don't enjoy the chore, when they keep going they get the
feeling of (28) that comes with finishing a task. And sharing housework can also help families work better and reduce
family stress. When children help out, chores get done sooner, and parents have less to do. This frees up time for the
family to spend doing fun things together.
The secret for involving children in household chores is asking for contributions that you value and that (29)
your children's ages and abilities. A chore that's too hard for a child can be frustrating - or even dangerous - and one that's
too easy might be boring. Even a young child can start to help out if you choose activities that are right for his age. You
can start with simple jobs like looking after his own toys. Chores like this send the message to your child that his

HOW GREEN IS YOUR HOUSE?
As the UK’s cities expand rapidly, problems are being caused for councils who have to meet the demand for housing. In
addition to this, energy prices and pollution levels continue to increase.
A solution has been developed by the Peabody Trust who have worked with environmental experts to build the
Beddington Zero Energy housing development (BedZED) in Sutton, England.
This unique development is an environmentally-friendly community of a hundred homes including gardens, offices, and
childcare facilities with plenty of surrounding green areas. BedZED’s designers have created an attractive, affordable,
urban village whose unique features benefit instead of harm the local community and environment. BedZED is a ‘zero
energy’ development no fossil fuels (coal and gas) are used and homes do not waste energy. Building materials are
mostly natural, renewable or recycled. Houses face the south so that they get plenty of sunlight and their roofs are also
fitted with solar panels, which change the sun’s energy into electricity. The windows consist of three layers of glass to
stop heat from escaping. The homes are also fitted with the most modern energy-saving appliances. It is estimated that
families’ electricity bills could be reduced by up to 60% whilst heating bills could be reduced by as much as 90' o.
Developers hope to achieve a 50% reduction in fossil fuel use by residents’ cars over the next decade by reducing the
need to travel. Some residents will have the opportunity to work within walking distance of their homes. The Peabody
Trust also aim to set up Internet shopping so that food can be delivered by local supermarkets.
As the need for environmentally friendly, low-energy housing increases, BedZED may change from being a unique
model, to a model for all future houses.

Why do parents have to get involved in their child’s education? Basically, parents’ involvement in their child’s learning
process offers many opportunities for success. According to Centre for Child Well-Being (2010), parental involvement in
their children’s learning not only improves a child’s morale, attitude, and academic achievement across all subject areas,
but it also promotes better behavior and social adjustment. It further says that family involvement in education helps
children to grow up to be productive, responsible members of the society.
Regrettably, there are also some, if not many, parents who are quite passive in their child’s education. Some of them are
not directly involved. Neither are they visible in the school premises and get involved in the desired goals of the school
where their children are getting what they need most for life.

The three Rs of the environment
People everywhere in the world produce a lot of rubbish but there is not enough space, and landfills are filling up quickly.
If we want to save our planet, then the so-called three Rs are essential for learning how to deal with the waste we produce.
The three Rs are reduce, reuse, and recycle. Here are a number of tips on what you can do to save the environment.
Reduce A good place to start is by buying things that don’t have a lot of packaging. Then there are items you may not use
very often, so you might as well borrow them from someone instead of buying them. Nowadays, newspapers can be read
online so buying the paper edition is not necessary. The same goes for emails and hence it is usually not necessary to print
them out. Generally, the use of electricity can be greatly reduced by, for example, turning off lights that are not used.
Reuse When you go shopping, refuse plastic bags and bring a bag with you instead. If you’re not buying a lot, a bag is not
necessary to begin with. Reusable bags should be heavier and more durable. If you prepare your lunch at home, put it in a
plastic lunch box. I always keep shoe boxes as they are great to store stuff. Many cities have collection points for used
clothes. If you have clothes that are still in good shape, you can bring them to the collection points rather than throwing
them away. Recycle Recycling is a process that makes it possible to create new products out of old ones. Paper,
aluminium, glass and plastic can often be recycled. Glass has been used for thousands of years and is relatively easy to
recycle. Aluminium can be repeatedly recycled quickly and easily. Paper is recyclable but it cannot be recycled forever.
The small fibres in paper eventually become very weak so that they can’t be recycled into good paper anymore. Also, not
every type of paper is recyclable as some high-quality paper is too expensive to recycle.
