PRACTICAL 2A
MAKE A SALT AND CALCULATE THE PERCENTAGE YIELD OF COPPER (II) SULFATE
Introduction
The purpose of flaming test is to identify the ions that presence in a compound. The electrons occupied
difference energy levels and remained in ground state. When heating occurs, the electrons will turn into
excite state, but electrons will not always remain in the excite state. In this case, electrons will release
energy and return to ground state and the energy is released produce light. The energy is directly
proportional to light. (Compatibility Mode, 2021). The colour of light is difference depends on the
temperature. When the electrons release higher energy, the temperature also become higher. The higher
temperature will show brighter light colour. (ThoughtCo, 2020)
Objective
To use Flaming Tests to identify compounds of Group 1 and Group 2
Reagents
Concentrated Hydrochloric acid, Sodium chloride, Potassium chloride, Barium chloride, Calcium chloride
Apparatus
Looped wire for flame test, Watch glass, Bunsen burner, Spatula
Procedure
Half a spatula of solid A provided was transferred in a watch glass.
A few drops of diluted HCl solution was added on to the solid to make a paste.
A clean piece of wire was dipped into the acidic paste.
The wire was held at the edge of a blue Bunsen flame and the color of the flame was recorded.
The steps were repeated for the other 3 solids provided.

Discussion
1. Explain how the Flaming Tests could be used to identify the compounds.
The flaming test can be used to identify the compounds by observing the color of the flame when the
compound is lit on fire. For example, sodium ion forms a yellow color flame and potassium ion produces
a lavender color flame when lit on a Bunsen burner.
2. Give a use for these Flaming Tests.
Flaming tests can be used to identify the ions that are contained in a certain compound. Flaming test also
act as a identification for ions by showing different colors of flame.
Conclusion
The experiment is conducted to use flaming tests to identify compounds of group 1 and group 2. The
difference flame colour is produced which are yellow colour, lilac colour, green colour and orange red
colour when sodium chloride, potassium chloride, barium chloride and calcium chloride being heated
respectively. The flame test cannot detect the ions when they are in low concentration. [Compatibility
Mode,2021]. The experiment has contributed on my understanding of difference atom in difference group
will produce difference flame colour.
