Piping Sizing

The document provides guidelines for engineering design of piping systems, including material selection and sizing. It discusses recommended fluid velocities based on pressure and service type. Tables are included with velocity limits for different piping materials. The pipe sizing process is outlined as a 5-step approach involving hydraulic diameter calculation, material selection, pressure rating determination, nominal size selection, and velocity verification. A piping schedule table format is shown to document the design. Standard tag structures are defined for identifying piping on drawings based on material, size, and pressure rating. Maximum SDR values and standard geometry for plastic piping are also included.

Engineering design guidelines:

Piping material selection and sizing

Introduction
The design guidelines covers the basic steps in the piping material selection and sizing in
sufficient detail to allow the mechanical engineer to perform full mechanical design of the
interconnecting piping

Fluid design velocities

The major factor defining the fluid velocity in the piping is its service and the fluid pressure.
The general principle is that the higher the pressure the higher the fluid velocity is. This
principle takes into account that the cost of piping is in linear proportion to the working
pressure.
For the 10 – 100 Barg range of pressures the following correction factor for pressure is suggested
(metal piping)

velocity /velocity_of_table_1 = (pressure[Barg])^0.15 (1)

At the pressures below 10 Barg (low pressure range) the pressure correction may not be taken
into account.
Recommended fluid velocities (m/s) for different type of service and plastic and fiberglass
reinforced piping are given in table 1.

Table 1 Recommended fluid velocities for low pressure service (below 6 Barg) for plastic and
fiberglass reinforced piping

Limiting factor: P – process, M – material resistivity to erosion
1 –even distribution between discharge outlets
2 – pump NPSHr

The velocities from table 1 having M – limit shall be increased by 30% for metal materials. For
example, for transport piping of SS316 the recommended velocity is 1.8 * 1.3 = 2.34 m/s

Pipe size selection

Pipe size selection is a 5-stage process

1. hydraulic diameter calculation by formula

4 * Flow[m3 / s ]
hydraulic _ diameter = (2)
π * velocity[m / s ]

2. material selection,
3. pressure rating calculation,
4. selection of the nominal pipe size from the standard range of sizes for the defined
pressure rating,
5. actual velocity calculation and comparing with initially selected value.

Piping list table

The results of the piping selection and tagging are summarized in the Piping Schedule table of
the following form

Table 2 Piping schedule form

For detail design not all information from table 2 is necessary – only 3 entries are used:
material, schedule and size. Usually these data are combined together inside the piping P&ID
tag.
The following tag structure is suggested
Fluid – Material – Size – Pressure_rating - pipe_ID
example. SW-SS316-14”-SCH40-06
Engineering design guidelines:

The pipe P&ID tag designation shall be defined for 3 classes: metal, FRP and plastic piping.

Plastic piping (PE, PP, PVC)

Maximum SDR value is calculated by the formula (for temperature of 20oC)

SDRmax=2*MRS/(k*P)+1, (1)

where MRS- minimum required strength, Bar (80 or 100), k=1.5 – safety coefficient (Standard DIN
8077), P – working pressure, Barg,
Example: P = 4.5Barg, MRS = 80, SDRmax = 2*80/(1.5*4.5) + 1 = 24.7
The nearest lower value is SDR 17.6

P*D
t= ( 4)
2( SE + PY )
t – pipe thickness, mm, P - Design pressure, Barg, D – Pipe outside diameter, mm, S – allowable
stress in tension, Bar, E – longitudinal-joint quality factor, Y – wall thickness correction factor (Y
= 0.0 for cast iron and 0.4 for all others )

t m = t + CA ( 4)
tm
t nom = (5)
0.875
CA – wall thickness correction factor, tnom –nominal thickness
Longitudinal joint quality factor may be taken from a table 10

Table 11 E factor for metals (B31.3)

Spec Class Description E
Carbon steel - seamless 1
Engineering design guidelines:
Piping material selection and sizing

Carbon steel - welded 0.85

Stainless steel - seamless 1.0
Stainless steel – welded, single butt seam 0.80
Stainless steel – welded double butt seam 0.85
Nickel alloys - seamless 1.0
Nickel alloys - welded 0.80

Example: P = 65 Barg, pipe size = 0.600m, material – 254 SMO

65 * 0.6
t= = 13.7 mm(0.54inch) (6)
2(1620 * 0.85 + 65 * 0.4)
t nom = 13.7 / 0.875 = 15.6mm(0.614inch)
From table 10 for NPS = 24 inch and wall = 0.614 inch one may find that SCH40 with wall = 0.687
inch is the nearest schedule.
