Properties of Matter

Matter has physical and chemical properties. Physical properties can be observed and measured without changing the composition of the substance, and include intensive properties like color and melting point, and extensive properties like mass and volume. Chemical properties can only be observed through a chemical change or reaction, and include oxidation state, chemical bonding, coordination number, heat of combustion, toxicity, flammability, corrosivity, and reactivity. Matter exists in three states - solid, liquid, and gas.

Properties

of
Matter
What is matter?
Matter is something that has mass
and occupies space. The state or
process of matter is an easily
observable property of matter,
which is the building block of all
physical structures. All matter exists
in three basic states: solid, liquid,
and gas.
Physical properties

Features that can be measured or

observed without changing the
composition of the substance.
Physical properties can be intensive
or extensive.
Intensive Extensive
Property Property
It is a bulk property, A property that is
which means it is a dependent on the
system’s local physical amount of matter in
property that is a sample. Extensive
independent of the properties are those
system’s size or volume in which the value of
of material. Intensive a system’s property
properties are those is equal to the sum
that are independent of of the values for the
the amount of matter parts of the system.
present.
Intensive Extensive
Property Property
It includes:
color
melting point It includes:
boiling point mass
electrical
conductivity weight
physical state at volume
a given
temperature.
Chemical Properties

are any of the properties of matter

that can be observed and measured
only by performing a chemical
change or chemical reaction.
EXAMPLE OF
CHEMICAL CHANGE
1. Oxidation State 5. Toxicity
2. Chemical Bonding
6. Flammability
3. Coordination
Number 7. Corrosivity
[Link] of combustion
8. Reactivity
1. OXIDATION STATE
the total number of electrons that an atom
either gains or loses in order to form a
chemical bond with another atom.
2. CHEMICAL BONDING
the formation of a chemical bond between two
or more atoms, molecules or ions to give rise to
a chemical compound.
3. COORDINATION NUMBER
the number of atoms, ions, or molecules that a
central atom or ion holds as its nearest
neighbours in a complex or coordination
compound or in a crystal.
4. HEAT OF COMBUSTION
the amount of heat liberated when a given
amount of the substance undergoes combustion.
5. TOXITY
a substance that can be poisonous or cause health effects.
6. FLAMMABLITY
the ability of a chemical to burn or ignite, causing fire or
combustion.
7. CORROSIVITY
capable of destroying other substances as they cause a chemical
reaction.
8. REACTIVITY
the ability of a substance to interact chemically with a second
substance.
