Ar armeured truck
moving at a veincity of 2 m/s is brought to rest by a bumper consisting of 2
helical compression springs arranged in parallel. The springs are compressed by 150 mm in bringing
the armoured truck to rest. The mass of truck is 1000
kg. The spring index can be taken as 6. The
springs are made of oil hardened and tampered steel wire with ultimate tensile strength of 1500
N/mm and modulus of rigidity of 81370 N/mm. Permissible shear stress for the spring wire can be
zaken as 50% of the ultimate tensile strength. Calculate:

2 Calculate the maximum shear stress developed (MPa) in a cylindrical shaft 8 cm in diameter and
subjected to a bending moment of 2.5 kNm and the twisting moment of 4.2 kNm. If the yield stress
of the shaft material is 300 MPa. Determine the factor of safety of the shaft according to the
maximum shearing stress theory of failure.

reamed and grounded holes.
Two rndc ore conaecicd by means ui a cuttei joirt. The inside diameter of the socket and the outer
diameter of the socket collar are 50 and 100 mm respectively. The rods are subjected to a tensile
force of 50 kN. The cotter is made of steel 30C8
(St=400N/mm) and FOS is 4. The width of the
cotter is five time the thickness. Calculate:
Width and thickness of the cotter (mm) on the basis of shear failure; and
b. width and thickness of the cotter (mai) on e basis of bending failure. 2
5 Using a knuckle joint two rods are connected. The axial force of 25 kN is acting on rods made of
plain carbon steel 45C8 (S,-380 N/mm) and the FOS is 2.5. The yield strength in shear is 57.7%
of the yield strength in tension. Determine
Diameter of the rods (mm).
Diameter of the pin (mm).
