FracGuard 400 Series
Composite Frac Plug
The Weatherford FracGuard® 400 Series Composite Frac Plug isolate the
formation above the plug for fracturing operations in both single and multiple-zone
stimulation applications, allowing flow back through the body for pressure
equalization or production. Available for casing sizes from 2-7/8” to 5-1/2” inch, the
FracGuard® frac plug comes with your choice of internal-ball frac plug or a top ball
design in most sizes. The top-ball design provides a larger flow area for higher
return rates while the integral design keeps the ball in place inside the plug during
operation. The flexibility of these tools saves operational time while protecting
sensitive formations.

FracGuard® frac plugs excel in stacked applications, achieving reliable operation

and rapid drill out using conventional drilling operations, including coil tubing drilling
motors. FracGuard® bridge plugs frac can be run on tubing, drillpipe, coiled tubing,
or wireline using conventional frac plug setting equipment.

Applications
• Single or multiple-zone stimulation
• Vertical, deviated, horizontal, or multilateral wellbores
• Underbalanced, multiple-zone completions
• Temporary well plugging

Features
• Temperature rating - 400º F (204º C)
• Patented element system achieves pressure rating up to 12,000-psi (827
bar)
• Holds full differential pressure from above and allows flow through the
mandrel from below
• Beveled bottom prevents body from spinning, thus decreasing drill out time
• Allows multiple plugs to be run to isolate a series of zones
• Allows back flow through the body for equalization or production

Benefits
• Saves time by allowing quick drillout with conventional tri-cone or junk-mill bits
• Lightweight cuttings lift easily and minimize plugging of surface equipment
• Allows underbalanced drill out of multiple plugs, protecting sensitive
formations

NOTE: Supported casing may be required with maximum differential pressure.

NOTE: The Weatherford FracGuard™ Composite Plugs are designed to be set with the Weatherford HST, AH and
HYF Hydraulic Setting Tools or the Baker E-4, No. 5, No. 10, or No. 20 Wireline Pressure Setting Assembly.
When using the E-4, it is recommended to use a standard burn charge for sizes 2-7/8” through 5-1/2” to
minimize time stopped in one position, reducing the chance of becoming stuck in suspended proppant. For
sizes 7.0” and larger it is recommended the slow burn charge be used in the E-4 No. 20 Wireline Pressure
Setting Assembly. If proppant is present in the wellbore and the risk of becoming stuck exist, contact your
local Weatherford Representative for setting tool power charge recommendations.

NOTE: The Owen GO (Compact Setting Tool) can also be used with the correct adapter kit. Contact engineering
for instructions on using any alternate setting tool other than those listed above with FracGuard™
composite plugs.

CAUTION: Before starting work, ensure all personal protection equipment is available and being used.
Evaluate job site to ensure work can be completed safely. All safety procedures are to be
observed.

RUNNING PROCEDURE
1. Run in speed for coil tubing and wireline application is recommended at 150 ft/min. maximum.
2. Run in speed for drill pipe or jointed pipe is 90 ft/min. maximum.

NOTE: DO NOT pressure down the annulus during the plug setting process.

MILLING PROCEDURE
The recommended mill is a four or five blade carbide junk mill with one blade extending across the face of the mill 60 -
70% of the diameter. This will prevent coring of the center of the mill. This type mill will reduce the possibility of
casing damage during mill-up of the composite plug. Proper bit size should be 92 – 95% of casing drift diameter for
jointed pipe and 95 – 98% for coiled tubing motor. Drill collars for weight and centralization are recommended. A
Junk Basket is recommended to prevent larger cuttings from settling on the plug while milling. Rotary speeds from 50
– 150 RPM are recommended. A tri-cone bit can also be used to remove the FracGuard® Composite Bridge Plug.

Tag plug with mill and begin circulation to wash any loose debris from top of plug. Circulation rates of ½ to 3 bbl.
/min. are recommended. Pick-up twelve inches and begin rotation. Set down 5,000 – 8,000 lb. for jointed pipe and
500 – 2,000 lb. for coiled tubing motor milling while rotating. Set down weight and pump rate will dictate milling time
required. Maintain slack off weight until plug is removed.

MILLING RECOMMENDATION
These practices and techniques have developed through testing and field runs with the goal of achieving the optimal
technique. However it should be noted that a variety of parameters could affect the milling out of a plug. The milling /
drilling techniques can and should change to meet those changing conditions.

MILLING WITH COILED TUBING MOTOR

• Mill size – Recommendation for the proper mill OD should be 96 to 98% of the casing drift diameter.
• Mill Type – A four (4) or five (5) bladed concave or convex mill with “cutrite” or chisel blade style.
• Mill Watercourse – The width of the watercourse can determine the size of the cuttings that are circulated.
Typically the larger the width and depth of the watercourse the larger the cutting returns are. The smaller the
watercourse, the smaller the returns. The desired results should be taken into consideration when choosing the
mills watercourse size and configuration.
• Weight on Bit (WOB) – 500 to 3,000 lb is optimum. The maximum amount of WOB should be used if needed.
• Flow Rate – One (1) to three (3) bbl/min. The flow rate will determine the motors rpm’s. The flow rate also affects
the WOB. Too high a flow rate can produce a “stand off” affect and thus reduce the WOB.
• Bottom Hole Assembly – A junk or boot basket should be used to keep cuttings from collecting above the motor or
in the annulus area around the coil tubing motor assembly. It is also recommended that motor assist device be
used when milling with coil tubing motors.
