RECEP TAYYIP ERDOGAN UNIVERSITY
SCHOOL OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES
ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE PREPARATORY PROGRAM
2019- 2020 ACADEMIC YEAR / FALL SEMESTER
SPEAKING SYLLABUS
Course Description: Students will continue to have the opportunity to practice putting their newly
learned grammar skills to use, while developing a level of comfort with vocabulary, pronunciation,
rhythm and intonation. Students will also be introduced to phonetics as they continue to work on their
pronunciation and their understanding of sounds in the English language.
Course Goals: This course has two goals: confidence and communication. First, the students will
achieve a level of comfort and confidence while using their English language skills. We will focus on
continuing to speak past mistakes and forgotten vocabulary words. Students will focus on
communication. That when speaking, being able to express yourself correctly and clearly is the most
important skill; so they will not get too preoccupied with grammar rules and elaborate vocabulary.
Students will also study different conversation and speech patterns, and will be encouraged to introduce
and include creativity into their dialogues and projects to show a true command of the language.
The Spring semester will specifically focus on developing non-verbal skills that contribute to fluency, as
well as public speaking. Giving the students more advanced skills to be better communicators and
listeners. The semester will end with students focusing on using all of the speaking skill practiced this
year to focus on public speaking and being able to give a strong final presentation.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Students will be able to communicate their thoughts, feelings, needs, wants, ideas, or opinions in
English.
- Students will be able to comfortably and confidently engage in a conversation.
- Students will use intonation, rhythm, expressions, idioms, and body language into their speech.
- Students will increase the awareness of different types of conversation patterns, and begin to introduce
variety in their speech patterns.
- Students will begin to use language creatively, and show a complete understanding of the language they
are using. Beyond just replicating speech located in their textbooks.
- Students will demonstrate and awareness of phonetics and begin to correct their pronunciation
- Students will begin to listen critically and notice places for improvement both in their own speech as
well as their classmates.
