ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I am very grateful to everyone who supported me to
complete my project effectively and moreover on time.
My deep acknowledgment and gratitude go to all those
who helped me present these ideas well.
I would like to express my gratitude to my teacher Mr.
MUKESH SIR for giving us an opportunity to do this
project and providing us all the valuable support and
guidance which made us complete the project on time.
AIM
To study the dependence of excess pressure on
concave side of a spherical stretched membrane
on the radius.
APPARATUS AND
MATERIAL
30CM lone aluminium pipe of diameter 1CM.
A few balloons and a thread ball .
BRIEF THEORY
The liquid drops tend to be spherical due to
surface tension. The drops retain their shape
because an excess pressure acts on concave
side of the liquid surface. The tendency of the
free surface of a liquid to act as a stretched
membrane and to attain the minimum
possible surface area is called surface tension.
The excess pressure on the concave side
depends on the radius of the surface. The
present project aims at studying the nature of
this dependance.
TECHNICAL NOTES
Take the aluminium pipe and by means
of a drilling machine , get a hole
(about ½ cm) drilled in it.
30𝑐𝑚
Whole with diameter 0.5cm
BRIEF PROCEDURE
1. Tie a rubber balloon on either side of the pipe by
means of thread. Holding the balloon at one end to
close its neck, inflate the other balloon through the
hole in the pipe.
2. Now holding neck of the inflated balloon inflate the
other balloon to a size clearly larger than the first as
shown. Close the hole tightly with finger to
prevent any leakage.
3. If we interconnect the two balloons, what do we
expect? Do the balloons attain equal size? Release the
neck of balloon (1) keeping the hole tightly closed and
observe the change .
QUALITATIVE
OBSERVATION
The size of ballon 1 decreases whereas the size of
balloon 2 increases.
INFERENCE
The size of the smaller balloon decreases further
whereas that of larger ballon increases.
The excess pressure inside the small balloon is larger
indicating that its value varies inversely as the radius.
