Definition
Structured cabling is building or campus telecommunications cabling
infrastructure that consists of a number of standardised smaller elements
called subsystems
The backbone functional elements of generic cabling to Offices
support ICT applications are as follows:
Homes
Campus Distributor (CD)
Industrial premises
Campus Backbone Cable Data centres
Building Distributor (BD) Distributed building services
Building Backbone Cable
Floor Distributor (FD)
M04 - Structured Cabling
Campus backbone cabling subsystem
The campus backbone cabling subsystem extends from the campus distributor to the building
distributor(s) connected to it usually located in separate buildings. When present, the subsystem
includes:
a) The campus backbone cables including any cabling components within the building entrance
facilities
b) The mechanical termination of the campus backbone cables at both the campus and building
distributors
c) Together with associated patch cords and/or jumpers at the CD

Structured Cabling Concept
Structured cabling systems are designed to be application independent
Structured cabling systems are designed on a hierarchical star topology
Structured cabling can support numerous IT systems including:
The computer network
Voice communications systems
Wireless LAN WAP connectivity
Cameras
Building management systems
Access control devices
Lighting
Audio visual
M04 - Structured Cabling
Application Independence
In the 1970/80s during the evolution of network computing IT systems were designed to work on
proprietary cabling e.g. IBM Type 1, IBM Type 2, Co-ax, twisted pair etc. By the 1990s a generic cabling
system based on a 4 (twisted) pair cable solution was developed. Structured cabling standards also
include fibre optic cables for extending the network over greater distances.

BSEN 50173 describes the link as the transmission path between two specified test interfaces of
generic cabling.
BSEN 50173 describes the channel as any transmission path comprising passive cabling components
between application-specific equipment or between application-specific equipment and an external
network interface.

July 2017!
M04 - Structured Cabling
From 1st July 2016 all communications cables for use in construction anywhere in the European
Economic Area (EEA) are subject to the Construction Products Regulation (CPR).
CPR will require all cables marketed in the EEA to carry a CE mark. To get a CE mark all such
communications cables will require to be tested and certified against the newly harmonised pan-
European standards for manufacturing process and fire performance. There is a transition period
(called the period of co-existence) of just one year.
The CE-marking will be a pre-condition to place cable for construction works on the market. The
relevance of the CE marking under the CPR is the elimination of technical barriers among the Member
States arising from the definition of fire performances, as well as the uniform modality to attest the
conformity of cables.
Cable manufacturers have a one year grace period for expending existing stock.

Link Components – Wiring Scheme
There are 2 wiring schemes agreed by the
TIA known as T568A and T568B
The scheme to be used should be determined by
the project designer
Either scheme can be used however it must be
consistent throughout or cross-over patch cords
will be required
When adding infrastructure to an existing
network check first
M04 - Structured Cabling
Based on TIA/EIA-568-B.1-2001, the T568A and T568B wiring schemes define the pinout, or order of
connections, for wires in eight-pin modular connector plugs and jacks. The only difference between
T568A and T568B is that pairs 2 and 3 (orange and green) are swapped.

Link Components – Patch Panels
When selecting and wiring patch panels consider the following:
The Category of the patch panel must be equivalent to the category of the cable
i.e. Cat 6 > Cat 6
Shielded patch panels must be used for shielded cable
Patch Panels are usually 1U (24 port) or 2U (48 port). When deciding which to
use consideration should be given to patchcord density
Check the wiring scheme!
M04 - Structured Cabling
Patch panels are key to the flexibility of a structured cabling sub-system, allowing the interconnectivity
of the work area cabling to the active network equipment.

Link Components – Telecommunication Outlets
When selecting and wiring TOs consider the following:
The category of the TO must be equivalent to the category of the cable
i.e. Cat 6 > Cat 6
Shielded modules must be used for shielded cable
TOs faceplates are usually single-gang or double-gang accommodating either 1,
2 or 4 RJ 45 modules
Check the wiring scheme!
RJ 45 modules can be flush mounted or angled
M04 - Structured Cabling
The selection of outlets depends on the density of devices required in the work area.
There are also options to purchase different styles of faceplate for areas where aesthetics is important.
Faceplates can vary in colour and material.

Tools Required
Insulation Displacement
Cable Stripping Tool
Connection (IDC) Tool
Cable Labelling
M04 - Structured Cabling
A vast majority of RJ45 modules require an IDC tool to terminate. There are also RJ45 modules that
require vendor specific termination tools or simply no tool at all.
