2. A particle, P , of mass 0.125kg moves in a straight line on a horizontal table against a resistance of
0.5v 2 , where v is the speed. The speed of P falls from 4ums −1 to 20ms −1 in time t seconds.

 2 
after impact the direction of motion of sphere A makes an angle tan −1   with the line of
 1− e 
centres, where e is the coefficient of restitution between the two spheres. (13 marks)

4. A particle, P , of mass m , is attached to a point O on a light spring of modulus of elasticity mg

whose ends are attached to two fixed points A and B distant λl in a vertical line, with A higher
1 1

4 2
upper fixed point O of the position of equilibrium of the particle is l ,
a. Find the value of the real constant λ . (6 marks)
b. With the value of λ so obtained, show that when P is slightly disturbed from rest in the
vertical direction, it performs simple harmonic motion. (7 marks)
