LESSON 2: Organizing Information through a Brainstorming List and Graphic Organizer
Brainstorming
• the process of generating topics and narrowing them down
• it improves creative thinking skills and deepens understanding of a possible topic
• popularized by Alex Osborn to aid in developing methods for creative problem-solving
• could be done individually or as a group
Methods in Brainstorming:
1. IDEA LIST
Topic: 2022 Elections
1. Presidential candidates
2. COMELEC
3. Register
4. Platforms
5. Government
6. Poverty
7. Funds
8. Campaign Period
2. IDEA MAP
Guidelines in conducting Group Brainstorming:
➢ Do not criticize during brainstorming
➢ If members are not used to working together, open with a warm-up exercise or an icebreaker.
➢ Assign a facilitator to lead the discussion.
➢ Give every member an equal opportunity to contribute.
➢ Take short breaks during long sessions.
➢ Vary standpoints and gain different perspectives.
➢ Create a fun atmosphere.
➢ Evaluate the ideas after the brainstorming sessions.
SYNTHESIS:
Brainstorming permits individuals to ponder more freely, without fear of judgment. It reassures open and ongoing group
effort to answer problems and breed new concepts.
What is a graphic organizer?
A graphic organizer is a tool that uses visual displays to express relationships between or among ideas.
Graphic organizers are helpful because:
• They help you understand how things go together.
• They help you remember information better.
• They make it easier to write your final draft.
• They help organize any type of writing.
1. VENN DIAGRAM
- It is used to compare and contrast ideas and makes use or two or more overlapping circles to show
similarities and differences. It was conceived and popularized by English Mathematician, John Venn, in 1880.
2. NETWORK TREE
- It is used to represent classification or hierarchy. It shows connection or how items are related to one
another (e.g.: family trees, lineages, categories).
3. FISHBONE MAP
- This is also called Ishikawa Diagram created by Kaoru Ishikawa. It shows causal relationship. It looks like a fish
skeleton with the effect (problem) written at head of the fish and the potential causes, on the spine.
4. SPIDER MAP
- This is also called semantic map. It helps focus on the topic. The topic or the central theme is placed at the
center. The other details are place on the diagonal lines, and the other sub details on the sides of the
diagonals.
5. TIMELINE
- This is used to sequence several dates or events in chronological order.
6. PLOT DIAGRAM
- This is used to visualize the plot definition and structure. It helps one to map events in the story.
7. CYCLE DIAGRAM
- This is used to show how items are related to one another in a repeating cycle. There is no beginning or end,
one step follows another repeatedly.
SYNTHESIS:
Graphic organizers are a valuable learning method for students of all ages to coordinate, explain, or simplify abstract
information—to help students develop awareness by discussing the connection between concepts.
• TOPIC OUTLINE -headings in a topic outline are only a word or phrase
• SENTENCE OUTLINE - headings in a sentence outline are complete sentences.
