Final Demonstration

Discussion of the learning A short story is a short piece of prose fiction that is of shorter
content length than a novel and concentrates on a single theme.

The following are the elements of a short story:


1. Character
- are the people in the story

a. Flat Character
- a character who displays a one or two personality
traits in the story. He/she does not change throughout
the course of the story.
b. Round Character
- A character who is complex and dynamic. He/she
changes in some way over the course of the story.
This character usually surprises readers.

2. Setting
- it presents the time and place, weather and season. It
helps create the mood or general feeling of the story

3. Plot
- the sequence of interrelated actions or events that
make up a story.

Specifically, the plot contains the:


a. Exposition – the introduction of the problem
b. Conflict – a problem that the main character/s
face/faces in the story. Conflicts can be solved in
nonviolent ways.
c. Climax – the point of highest emotional intensity.
d. Falling Action – occurs right after the climax and leads
toward the closure.
e. Resolution (or Denouement) – the solving of the
problem.

4. Point of View
- The eyes and mind through which the reader views
the unfolding of events.

There are different types of point of view. There are as


follows:
a. First – person – it can make the story personal and it
can build a strong response to a character, but the
reader can tell only what the character sees, hears,
knows, and believes.
b. Third – person (limited) – it focuses on one character’s
perspective. In fact, the narrator can enter the
character’s mind.
c. Third – person (Omniscient) – it is the most flexible
outside narration. It gives a wider view of the story.

5. Theme
- the central idea or meaning of a story.
Application Exercises The teacher will distribute the hand - outs entitled “The Legend
of Mayon Volcano” then he/she will divide the class into four
groups. Each group representative will pick their assigned
element of the story. The students will identify their assigned
task from the given hand - outs. Afterwards, each group will
choose their group representative to present their work.

Explanation 5 pts.
Presentation 5 pts.
TOTAL: 10 pts.
