Many high school students in the Philippines work part-time jobs to support their families or earn extra income. However, the effect of work hours on academic performance is a concern. This study seeks to determine the relationship between work hours and academic performance, identify factors influencing performance, and explore challenges students face in balancing work and school. The findings could help support working students and inform policies. The study will survey grade 12 students at Catanduanes National High School and be limited by self-reported data and the single school location.

Chapter 1: Introduction

Background of the Study

In the Philippines, many high school students work part-time jobs to support their families or to earn
extra income for personal expenses. However, the impact of work hours on the academic performance
of these working students has been a topic of concern for educators, parents, and policymakers.
According to a study by the Philippine Statistics Authority, the labor force participation rate of 15-24
year-olds in the Philippines was 34.5% in 2020. This means that a significant number of high school
students are working while studying. The study also found that the majority of working students are
engaged in low-paying jobs in the service sector, such as sales clerks, waiters, and domestic helpers. The
impact of work hours on academic performance has been studied extensively in other countries, but
there is a lack of research on this topic in the Philippines. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the
impact of work hours on the academic performance of working students in grade 12 in catanduanes
national high school.

Statement of the Problem

The main problem addressed in this study is the impact of work hours on the academic performance of
working students in grade 12 catanduanes national high school. Specifically, the study aims to answer
the following research questions:

1. What is the relationship between work hours and academic performance of working students in grade
12?

2. What are the factors that influence the academic performance of working students in grade 12?

3. What are the challenges faced by working students in balancing work and school responsibilities in
grade 12?
Objectives of the Study

The general objective of this study is to investigate the impact of work hours on the academic
performance of working students in grade 12 in catanduanes national high school. The specific
objectives are:

1. To determine the relationship between work hours and academic performance of working students in
grade 12.

2. To identify the factors that influence the academic performance of working students in grade 12.

3. To explore the challenges faced by working students in balancing work and school responsibilities in
grade 12.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant for several reasons. First, it will contribute to the existing literature on the
impact of work hours on academic performance. Second, the findings of this study can inform
policymakers and educators on the need to provide support and resources for working students to help
them balance their work and school responsibilities. Third, the study can provide insights for working
students and their families on the potential consequences of working long hours on their academic
performance.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on working students in grade 12 in Catanduanes national high school (CNHS). The
study will use a quantitative research design and will collect data through a survey questionnaire. The
study will be limited to students in Catanduanes national high school due to logistical constraints. The
study will also be limited by the self-reported nature of the data, which may be subject to response bias.

Definition of Terms
 Work hours: The number of hours per week that a student spends on paid employment.

 Academic performance: The grades or academic achievement of a student in school.

 Working student: A student who is engaged in paid employment while studying in school.
