What is a sentence?
A sentence is a group of words or word that expresses a complete thought. To express a
complete thought, a sentence needs subject and predicate. Sentences are classified into simple,
compound,
and complex.
1. A simple sentence expresses a single thought or idea.
Example: Ana and Liza have been good friends.
Ana usually accompanied and helped Liza.
2. A compound sentence has two or more independent clauses joined by
coordinate conjunctions, like and, but, so, and or.
And is used to show similar or additional ideas.
But is used to show contrast.
While means at the time.
So is used to show consequence or result.
Or is used to show choice or alternative.
Example:
Gerry’s father prepared the boat and he set sail to town.
My father was funny but my mother was serious in disposition.

3. Complex sentence is made up of two or more ideas combined by using
conjunctions like because, so that, where, if, although, among others to
show relationships of ideas.
Use because to reason; so that to show effect; when to express at or
during the time the action is done or a situation happens; where to
express at, in, or to what place; if to show condition; although to mean
in spite of the fact that.
Example:
Filipinos can easily overcome problems because they have supportive
families.
I use animal manure as fertilizer so that my plants will grow healthy and
robust.
The helpers were inside when a strange occurrence happened.
All the requests will be granted if the budget is released on time.
Henry was coaxed by his friend Carlos to try starting the plane’s engine,

Noting details is a reading comprehension skill that involves picking out, from a
piece of text, the particular piece or pieces of information to achieve a given purpose such as answering a
question in a test. When you read a selection, look for important
and specific details. These details should give complete picture of the story by identifying the setting, the
characters and plot of the story.

An inferring is a form of reasoning in which one derives a conclusion from facts or assumptions
based on experiences. Readers infer from the text during and after reading. They go beyond the words
of the text to a judgment about what is not there but is implied.
The mood or tone of a selection refers to the overall or common qualities and emotions revealed
in the way the characters feel and behave. This may also projected through the setting of the story or
selection. Just as a person feels in many ways, different words can express fun, sadness, anger,
happiness, sympathy, seriousness, and many other feelings.

Main Idea- tells what something is all about. It tells the topic of the paragraph and what the paragraph
says about the topic.
Main idea of a paragraph is the most important idea that a paragraph says about its topic.
Sometimes the main idea is stated in a paragraph. When the main idea is directly stated, it may be found
anywhere in the paragraph-at the beginning, in the middle or at the end.
When not stated directly, the main idea may be repressed by making a summary of the important
ideas stated in the paragraph.
Example:
Animals reproduce in different ways. Some gave birth to live animals. Other animals lay eggs in which
the young animals develop and hatch. Dogs give birth to puppies. Human beings give birth to a baby. Mother
hens sit on their eggs until these are hatched.
