2 ( Roberta, aged 82, has this to say about the Lo Building Bridges scheme in her area: | ike t0 thnk fm a trend setter, even at my age. | was one ofthe frst to say yes'to this scheme and my friends folloned ater. wanted fo get to know more about the young people hanging around ouside shops, ‘obviously bored to tears. Of course | was imvsble to them, and Im sad to say that | was quite scared of ‘hem wit ther loud voices, metal bts hanging from their noses and eyebrows, and war pant onthe faces. Now | know that’ just the ouside; appearances canbe deceptive and that works both ways. ‘The fist time | was introduced to Samuel, a few of us had gone to the local high school to meet some students. My immediate thought was how polite he was, offering me a coffe and hanging up my coat. Once we got talking there was no stopping us. His grandmother had died two years eae; | could tel that he ‘missed her and that she must have been a lively soul. | found myself teling him how much | missed my own ‘son and hs family. They were kiled in a car accident afew years ago, and I realised thatit was the fist time | ‘had talked about them since then. There are lots of cd people, tke me, who find themselves al alone inthe ‘wot. Years ago we thought we'd stil be pat ofa loving fami, with grandchidren to cae for. Meeting Samuel was a turning pont for me. He's interested in me and the things I've done in my long if, ‘but more importantly he's got me invoWved in more and more activites that I never thought | would be able {o do. might not go skate boarding but I'm geting good a playing on his game console and he has shown ‘me how to use the laptop computer that I won when he entered my name online Listen tome, online! | can ‘email and Samuel has been trying to get me to wite about the things Ie experienced in my lie ina ‘hog’ He even thrks I could gett published. I would have laughed atthe dea bebre, but now my new motto is “W not nw, then when’ We're both keen artists and he often brings me his artwork from school o look at ‘and its made me get my paintbox out again. Another big change is that | get out and vist Samue' fay. | atten go over thereto cnner and take them a home-made cake when | do. ‘This scheme has thrown me a lifeline and itmakes me angry when other old people won’ give teenagers a chance. Be, wt Roberta loves to talk! | dn really understand just how much one person can achieve in fe unl! met her |oved to listen to my gran stories about her childhood, ad tis was one ofthe reasons tht | got involved with Bulking Bridges. Did you know that some of ou senor ctizens often go for days without talking to a single person? ‘Samuel, aged 16, has this to say: It was easy for me to get involved because I didnt think of tas charity. Now | just love spending time with Roberta; se is a seriously interesting lady! Do you know that just twenty years ago she learned to fy a helicopter and clocked up ten thousand miles? What about the fact that she was a chess champion when ‘she was younger? No wonder | can never beat her. Her eyesight isnt as good as t used to be so she trusts ‘me to help her wih bank statements and bis. Quite honesty, | dont know how she survives onthe small ‘amount of money she has, but she does know how to budget. We often go to museums and art galeries, places | normaly would have avoided, but she makes them interesting My family love having Roberta over for dinner; she really makes them laugh. Some ofthe crazy things she
