Green plants use sunlight and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to produce carbohydrates (food)
by the process of photosynthesis. Since plants produce food for themselves, they are known as
producers. So, they are the first link in any food chain.

53

Biomass is a clean, renewable energy source. Its initial energy comes from the sun, and plants or
algae biomass can regrow in a relatively short amount of time. Trees, crops, and municipal solid waste
are consistently available and can be managed sustainably.

Biogas is a renewable fuel produced from the anaerobic digestion of organic

feedstocks including municipal waste, farm waste, food waste, and energy crops. Raw
biogas typically consists of methane (50–75%), carbon dioxide (25–50%), and

smaller amounts of nitrogen (2–8%). Trace levels of hydrogen sulfide, ammonia,
hydrogen, and various volatile organic compounds are also present in biogas
depending on the feedstock.1 Life cycle assessment studies have shown that
deploying biogas technologies can effectively reduce greenhouse gas (GHG)
emissions and, therefore, reduce the climate impact of energy consumption.2–

A bar chart is ‘‘a graphic representation of project activities, shown in a time-scaled bar line with no links
shown between activities’’ (Popescu and Charoenngam 1995, p. 96). The bar chart was originally
developed by Henry L. Gantt in 1917 and is alternatively called a Gantt chart. 1 It quickly became popular
—especially in the construction industry—because of its ability to graphically represent a project’s
activities on a time scale. Before a bar chart can be constructed for a project, the project must be broken
into smaller, usually homogeneous components, each of which is called an activity, or a task. No
absolutely correct or incorrect way to break down a project exists; however, the scheduler should take a
balanced approach and break it down into a reasonable number of activities that are easily measured and
controlled without being overly detailed.

COD will always be greater than BODu and their difference represents non-biodegradable oxygen

In a slow sand filter water is subjected to various purifying actions as it percolates through the filter
media. Impurities present in water are removed by a combination of straining, sedimentation,
biochemical and biological process. Shortly after the starting of filtration, a thin slimy layer called the
schmutzdecke is formed on the surface of the sand bed. It consists of a great variety of biological

organisms which feed on the organic matter and convert it into simple, harmless substances.
Considerable portion of inert suspended particles is mechanically strained out in this layer. Further
during its passage through the sand bed the water becomes virtually free from suspended and colloidal
matter, pathogenic bacteria and complex salts in solution. This results in simultaneous improvement in
the physical chemical and bacteriological quality of water.

In rapid sand filter ,Biological Action does not play significant role.

Membrane Filter Technique

The concept of MPN index is based on the laws of probabilities and statistics and hence it provides a
more rational approach for indicating the concentration of coliform bacteria or E-coli in water.

It is the simplest and the most recent method used for detecting the presence of bacteria of coliform
group and measuring their concentration in water. In this method the water sample is filtered through
sterile membrane having porosity 80% and microscopic pores (pore size 5 to 10 mμ.).

The bacteria present in water are retained on the membrane. The membrane with the bacteria so
isolated is then put in contact with a suitable nutrient (M-Endo’s medium) which inhibits the growth of
bacteria other than the bacteria of coliform group. It is then placed in an incubator and kept there at a
temperature of 37°C for a period of 20 hours. The bacteria of coliform group if present in water are
developed into visible colonies which can be counted with the help of microscope.

86

Serial dilution involves the process of taking a sample and diluting it through a series of standard volumes
of sterile diluent, which can either be distilled water or 0.9 % saline. Then, a small measured volume of
each dilution is used to make a series of pour or spread plates.

The (BOD Test) Procedure: The BOD of the wastewater is determined by using the serial dilution method
which, along with preparation of reagents, is described in detail in the Standard Methods for Examination
of Water and Wastewater, published by American Water Works Association, American Public Health
Association and Water Environment Federation.

The principal biological processes used for wastewater treatment can be divided into two main
categories:

1.suspended growth and

2.attached growth (or biofilm) processes.

HPSC001:HPSC AEE Environmental Engineer Full Length Test 01 · MCQ · Solutions Page 63 of 69
In attached growth processes, the microorganisms responsible for the conversion of organic material
or nutrients are attached to an inert packing material. The organic material and nutrients are removed
from the waste-water flowing past the attached growth also known as a biofilm. Packing materials used
in attached growth processes include rock, gravel, slag, sand, redwood, and a wide range of plastic
and other synthetic materials. Attached growth processes can also be operated as aerobic or
anaerobic processes. The packing can be submerged completely in liquid or not submerged, with air
or gas space above the biofilm liquid layer. The most common aerobic attached growth process used
is the trickling filter in which wastewater is distributed over the top area of a vessel containing non-
submerged packing material

Slow sand filtration is a type of centralized or semi-centralized water purification system. A well-
designed and properly maintained slow sand filter (SSF) effectively removes turbidity and pathogenic
organisms through various biological, physical and chemical processes in a single treatment step. Only
under the prevalence of a significantly high degree of turbidity or algae-contamination, pre-treatment
measures (e.g. sedimentation) become necessary. Slow sand filtration systems are characterized by a
high reliability and rather low lifecycle costs. Moreover, neither construction nor operation and
maintenance require more than basic skills. Hence, slow sand filtration is a promising filtration method
for small to medium-sized, rural communities with a fairly good quality of the initial surface water
source.

Grit in sewage consists of coarse particles of sand, ash and clinkers, egg shells, bone chips and many
inert materials inorganic in nature. Both quality and quantity of grit varies depending upon (a) types of
street surfaces encountered (b) relative areas served (c) climatic conditions (d) types of inlets and
catch basins (e) amount of storm water diverted from combined sewers at overflow points (f) sewer
grades (g) construction and condition of sewer system (h) ground and ground water characteristics (i)
industrial wastes (j) relative use of dumping chutes or pail depots where night soil and other solid
wastes are admitted to sewers and (k) social habits. The specific gravity of the grit is usually 2.4 to
2.65. Grit is non-putrescible and possesses a higher hydraulic subsidence value than organic solids.
Hence, it is possible to separate the gritty material from organic solids by differential sedimentation in a
grit chamber.

The objective of secondary treatment is the further treatment of the effluent from primary treatment to
remove the residual organics and suspended solids. In most cases, secondary treatment follows primary
treatment and involves the removal of biodegradable dissolved and colloidal organic matter using
aerobic biological treatment processes. Aerobic biological treatment (see Box) is performed in the
presence of oxygen by aerobic microorganisms (principally bacteria) that metabolize the organic matter
in the wastewater, thereby producing more microorganisms and inorganic end-products (principally
CO2, NH3, and H2O). Several aerobic biological processes are used for secondary treatment differing
primarily in the manner in which oxygen is supplied to the microorganisms and in the rate at which
organisms metabolize the organic matter.

High-rate biological processes are characterized by relatively small reactor volumes and high
concentrations of microorganisms compared with low rate processes. Consequently, the growth rate of
new organisms is much greater in high-rate systems because of the well controlled environment. The
microorganisms must be separated from the treated wastewater by sedimentation to produce clarified
secondary effluent. The sedimentation tanks used in secondary treatment, often referred to as
secondary clarifiers, operate in the same basic manner as the primary clarifiers described previously. The
