Food labels are primary means of communication between the producer or the manufacturer and the consumer or
the purchaser.

Objectives:
• To use one of the basic tools of nutrition in assessing the nutritional component of the food.
• To convey the nutrient content or information of a label.

I. Find a food product with food label. Take a picture of the food product and its food label. Put the
pictures on designated box below.

1. Assess, how many servings in the food product?


The food product’s serving size is 1 cup (8 fl. oz.) 240 mL in which the servings per container is 4.

2. Assess, how many is the calorie per serving?


The food product has 110 Calories per serving with 20 calories coming from fat.

3. Is there any vitamin/s and/or mineral/s? If yes, what are those?


The food product contains a variety of vitamins and minerals. Namely, Vitamin A (4%), Vitamin C
(4%), Calcium (15%), and Iron (2%).
4. What’s the importance of using the Basic Tools of Nutrition?
Planning, obtaining, preparing, serving, and consuming meals for both normal and therapeutic
diets of people or groups is aided using fundamental nutrition techniques. Additionally, it offers
the advantages listed below:
• It offers sound advice on how to organize, pick, and cook enough meals for one's family
and oneself.
• It offers the recommended daily intake for each food group for people to maintain
excellent health.
• It aids individuals in making informed daily food choices.
Given the advantages, fundamental nutrition techniques are crucial since they are utilized to
create nourishing meals for both individuals and population groups.
5. What are the benefits of reading the Nutrition Labels of Nutrition Facts?
Consumers benefit from reading nutrition labels and nutrition facts for the following reasons:

• A food's label contains comprehensive information on the nutrients it contains.


• If you suffer from a health problem like high blood pressure or high cholesterol, learning
how to read food labels is very crucial.
• When comparing two foods that are identical, you can use the labels to determine which
is healthier.
Most people do not look at nutrition labels because the majority don’t really look at the nutritional
value of the food products they purchase. Not everyone is conscious of what they consume and
don’t realize the consequences or risks if their diet is laid out in a manner that is beneficial or
nutritional to them. With that in mind, it is important to always remember that the food we intake
determines how our lives will be and how our body will be. By simply reading the nutrition label,
you are able to assess the food products you consume and analyze which are the ones that are
most beneficial to you and fit your diet plan.
