Wish you all a good day.” Hearing the warm address of their Principal, Ms. their chit-chat and harkened to the message. “As announced earlier, today we are going to attend a seminar led by a renowneq motivational speaker, Mr. Rajesh Aggarwal. We are uely fortunate to get the right person to lead today's motivational session. He is an internationally accepteg speaker as well as author of several books. His books have been translated into many languages. He has led motivational classes at thousands of venues, both in India and abroad and has influenced many to become successful leaders jn life, Its my privilege to welcome and introduce him to all of you.” Mareena, all the children stopped Mr. Rajesh Aggarwal walked across the stage, amidst the enthusiastic applause of the students. He started the session referring to the internationally acclaimed leadership guru Mr. Robin Sharma. In his famous book “Discover your Destiny” he speaks about a spiritual awakening experience of the person who has undergone a self-awakening. He further quoted an excerpt from the book, Discover your Destiny. “With a gun pushed up against my temple, ready to squeeze the trigger, sweat was pouring down my forehead and my heart was beating wildly. My hands were shaking uncontrollably. I could see the headline of my obituary right now. ‘Dar Sanderson, international hotel entrepreneur, divorced father of three, dead at the age 44 - by his own hand’ But as I closed my eyes and said a final prayer aloud, something unexpected happened. I began to feel dizzy and fell to the floor, the gun dropping out of my hands. As I lay there motionless, a blinding white light began to fill my body. Nothing like this had ever happened to me before. What happened to me then in that motel room? Was it an experience of the divine? Was it a spiritual awakening? Was it simply a physical reaction to the extreme stress 4 I was experiencing? Truthfully, I do not know about it till the date. Soon, my entire body began to shake. Sweat flowed out of me in torrents to the cold and filthy floor. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, came these words that pierced the deepest part of me, ‘Your life is a treasure and you are so much more than you know.’ Once these words flashed across my mind, I stopped shaking. I just lay there, in a pool of perspiration, staring up at the ceiling. I had never felt such internal peace in all my life. I was completely in my body, fully within my heart.” Generally, when we have to face the hard realities of life we are more prone to think that the world is as we see it. We tend to forget that our life is a treasure and we are so much more than what we know. We find it hard to come out of the false assumptions we have. We view the world from our own perspective. We visualise life events with the sad outlook we have due to certain life experiences. When we change our outlook or the frame of our vision the world too will change. The world is a mirror. We receive from life according to what exactly we are. Our success, our future, our destiny are all our choices. There are many living examples before us who redefined their own destiny and became a classical inspiration for all of us. Helen Keller Helen Keller, the blind and deaf American, was the first such person to graduate from college. Famously tutored by Annie Sullivan, her life was chronicled in the play, “The miracle worker.” After graduation, Keller became a noted speaker, author, and crusader for pacifism, women’s right to vote and birth control among other causes. Ludwig van Beethoven Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer who lost most of his hearing from tinnitus at the age of twenty. He then used special hearing tubes and felt the vibrations of his piano to compose various symphonies in classical, heroic, and romantic Periods. He was tutored by Mozart and Haydn who were among the greatest composers of that time. His accomplishments are dazzling and spell-bounding even though he was never able to hear his own composed music. St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara lost his parents and the on} brother on the same day at a very young age.. Inner struggle agony, and persuasion from all around made him to leave the monastery where he was doing his training to become a Priest, His inner voice and peace within enlightened him to define his own destiny with determination. He proclaimed, “The Lorg is my portion and cup.” He became the founder of two religious congregations, a social reformist, and an inspiration for many. He opened schools with every church which is one of the causes for the high literacy rate in Kerala. There are no accidents in life. If we decide so, the negative life experiences and misfortunes are powerful enough to stimulate personal growth. Robin Sharma gives us the message — “The pain of a hard past can destroy us. Or it can dignify us. It's our choice.” In times of challenge, we begin to ask ourselves great questions~ Why sufferings? How it came to my life? Why only to me? Why not to the other person? And so on. But it happens only to a few, others are carried away by negative experiences, and end up in fear and distress. But those who dare to define their destiny are happy to walk through the unfamiliar shore and the road less travelled. Jesus Christ said, “The road to eternity is narrow and only a few find it.” Be determined to co-write the destiny that has been written for the story of your life, by being good and by daring to look at life with a new outlook. St. Alphonsa Muttathupadathu St. Alphonsa Muttathupadathu also found meaning in the dark realities of life. Though lived only for a short span of 35 ye2"s she lived these years heroically enduring all that came on her way to sainthood. The physical and mental pain she experienced during her lifetime due to sickness, misunderstanding, © became a cause for her to love God more dearly and heroically. ® We find no trace of complaints, criticism, or murmurings in her thoughts, words or deeds. Catholic Church honoured her with the crown of sainthood. , Sufi poet Jalal-ud-Din Rumi sings, “You are not a drop in the ocean, you are the entire ocean in a drop.” “Trust in the ability of your heart. Realise your inner strength. You can decide your destiny,” the seminar got concluded His words made ripples in their hearts. Students were astonished to hear the amazing success story of the man who was standing in the pinnacle of fame and had a complete turnaround from the verge of committing suicide. Various emotions flashed through their minds. ‘Ashok, who was depressed due to the low grades in exams, felt it’s not necessary to be frantic on such silly issues. Sudha, who was in despair due to family issues got an inner call to rise up. Maria, who felt giddy whenever she thought of Mathematics and Social Science, could really experience an inner strength to strive ahead. Happy-go-lucky chaps Anish, Vishnu, and Sharat now got a vision about their future. “Change! Those who want to reap new harvest should dare to take new steps. Else, our life will be the same till death.” Jugnu came*rushing to the principal with a piece of paper, “Oh Ma'am! Thank you. At times, I had been frightened if my life slips away from my control. I thought too much about my problems but the same light flashed through my inner core through the session with all its brilliance! Thank you, thank you so much...” Children realised their inner potentialities and skills to take new steps!! Aet us Discuss 1. How would you help your friend who is struggling with depression? 2. Our friend Navaz is acting in this play.” The main auditorium of the school was packed with students. The announcement about the drama competition was heard repeatedly. With great difficulty, Raju and Robin managed to get seats in the front row of the auditorium. “Friends, the play we are going to stage today is centred on the life and teachings of a great personality, Swami Vivekananda— the youth icon of India who had proclaimed the glory and majesty of India to the universe through his famous speech in Chicago. Everyone was silent as they heard the announcement. Students waited patiently for the curtain to rise. Scene 1 The play began with a scene where mother Bhuvaneshwari Devi was telling a story to her six year old son Narendra (Swami Vivekananda). Mother: Son Narendra, I narrated you a story from Ramayana yesterday. Today, I will tell you a story from the Holy Bible about Lord Jesus. The master of the world, Lord Jesus taught His disciples and people through stories and parab| $ le One of the parables which He taught was of he Good Samaritan. J A Jewish man from Jerusalem was heading to Jericho Suddenly, a group of men attacked him and took alt his belongings, ripped off most of his clothes, and beat him up very badly, They left him on the roadside bleeding, bruised, and almost. breathless. A few minutes later, a priest came along the same path and noticed the man nalf dead and crying for help. But he crossed lying on the side of the road, | pretending that he didn’t see the man, the road and walked on the other side An hour later, a Levite came that way. Levites are the people who assist priests in their religious work. He saw the wounded man, but went away without lending any help to him. A few minutes later, another man came that way. He was from the Samaritan community with whom Jews had no contact and usually considered them as enemies, But as soon ‘as he saw the wounded man he felt compassion for him, He went to him, cleaned his wounds, and put bandages on his sores. Then, he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, He paid the inn keeper and requested him to take care of the man till he returns. He promised to pay an extra cost, if required. Narendra: Why did Lord Jesus narrate this story, Mom? Mother: Son, it is to teach that all people are brothers and sisters and we should love one another irrespective of the caste, creed, OF religion, N jarendra From where did Jesus get all these knowledge? Mother: e other: Jesus was the Son of God. He got this wisdom through his constant contact with God through prayer and meditation. He used to get up early in the morning and go to lonely places to meditate, ao Narendra Mother: Announcement: Scene 2 (The young man Aravind: Narendra: Aravind: Announcement: Scene 3 Narendra: SRP: Narendra: SRP: Mom, what do you mean by meditation? (Curtain falls) Stories from the sacred books sowed spiritual seeds in the mind of young Narendra which guided him to close his eyes and meditate. Narendra with his friend Aravind) Narendra, I could not understand what you said. Life is to enjoy. We should attain higher education and a noble profession to lead a life full of enjoyment and satisfaction. What is the use of getting many degrees? I wish to see God. I want to be liberated. The ultimate goal of life is not getting a job, but attaining realisation of truth. It is reunion with the Lord. Well, I am not capable of arguing with you. I don’t think that I will win either. (Curtain falls) Narendra’s mind wandered in search of God. He decided that the realisation of God is the ultimate aim of his life. He asked several prominent sages and gurus about the realisation of God, but none of their answers satisfied him until he met Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa (SRP). Have you seen God? Yes, I have seen God. I see Him as I see you here, only more clearly. Robin, do you pray? Yes, I go to church and partake in the evening prayer at home, But Ms. Lilly always says that it's not enough. It seems that we should have a clear and strong relation with God. Shall we ask her about it? ‘Look! She is sitting there alone. Right time! Let's ask her now itself.’ Tes the first time students have asked me such a question. Glad to hear it. God realisation is not only preached by great personalities but can also be realised by ourselves as God dwells within us. We need not go anywhere else seeking God. Turn towards yourself with great faith and intense love. And that’s the real meditation. The term meditation was introduced as a translation for eastern spiritual practices referred to as dhyana, a sanskrit word which means yana to dhi- a journey to knowledge and to self. What shall we do for that? Sit in a relaxed posture for five minutes daily. Concentrate 0” yourself and your heart, breathe slowly and deeply. This type of meditation will help you to attain peace of mind and experience God. There are people who experience God through prayer and meditation. St. Euphrasia experienced the presence of God through meditation and contemplation which were very dear to her. The fruits of meditation were clearly seen in her life and people lovingly called her ‘Praying Mother’. Self-actualisation is one of the fruits of meditation. Ma'am, I am practising meditation daily as my mother suggested it. Now, I experience inner peace. I could concentrate in studies as well. Tf you're interested, we shall practise it in the next Value Education class. Sure, Ma’am. We'll do it. One of the social reformers of Kerala, St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara says that the essential worth of a family consists in its holiness and fear of God. Such a family will enjoy divine blessings both in this world and in the next. Each religion inspires its members to seek God and supports all the endeavours for God-realisation. If we follow the teachings and rituals of our respective religions with faith and devotion, we are sure to attain self-actualisation. Well, it’s time for my next class. So, barbers do not exist.” Hairdresser said, “Listen, it is not the problem of barber. The problem is with this person who does not go to a barber.” The man said, “Exactly! All are coming to see the ocean.” Mother fish said, “Oh! daughter, we are in the ocean. We live and move in the ocean. Still we say, we do not see God! What a contradiction! ® Swati was really gloomy as she couldn't attend Maria's birthday party. She couldn't even pay attention to the class as she was lost in thoughts of the description given by her friends about the party. She woke up from the dream world when she heard Ms. Karuna’s question. “Where are you lost Swati?” It was other students who answered for her. i Aparna: Serin: ) Dolly Aruna: teacher. Ma'am, yesterday all of us were invited to Marla’s birthday party, But Swati’s father didn’t let her go. She was upset when we shared our experiences about the party. Before Aparna could finish, Serin stood up. Ma'am, it was really a great experience for all of us. We were astonished to see how much her family members love Maria, Her youngest brother who came to wish her said that she Is a gift they got from God. We really felt jealous, The care and concern Maria’s family showed towards her grandparents really touched me. And how loving they were to the children, especially towards us! I really felt bad for not having grandparents. For me, to have a party means to invite a lot of people. But for Maria, just her papa’s brothers and their kids filled their house for the party. How lovely it was! I have understood the advantage of living in a joint family yesterday. How cooperative were her aunts and uncles! A real family should be like this. What Aruna, the only child in her family said was thought provoking for the By then, Ms. Karuna noticed that Delma was hiding behind other girls. She asked her, “How was your experience at the party, Delma?” % Delma: When others were enjoying the party, I was busy enquiring Maria’s uncle about how do they celebrate their functions. The uncle’s reply was surprising. He said, “We gather in one of our houses in turn for all the festivals. We got this system from our father and his brothers. No matter where we are, everyone comes together to celebrate the festivals in its true spirit, Thankfully, no one has gone abroad so far. We don’t know how it will be in the future. Usually these gatherings are not only for having food together but also provide a platform for sharing and discussing with our parents and elders about our life realities, kids and their studies, financial matters, things to focus, any pitfall which has happened in the family relation, and so on. Father heads such meetings. He directs us with love and firmness.” The information that Delma got from Maria’s uncle was something quite new for the teacher and the students alike. When the teacher heard all these she said, “For moulding the young generation, good families like Maria's are required. Children should feel proud of their families.” All the friends were glancing at Maria with a mixed feeling of admiration and jealousy. Maria said, “God has given me an opportunity to be proud of my family. My family is my luck. I have a dream that there should be good families with happy children.” “We all got the same dream. I think it will be good to arrange a seminar on family. We shall discuss the matter with our Principal, Ms. Lucy and arrange it as early as possible,” said Ms. Karuna. “Thank you Ma'am, we are waiting for that day.” All the students replied together. (SEMINAR DAY) “JOINT FAMILY VERSUS NUCLEAR FAMILY” is the theme of today’s seminar, I hole heartedly welcome Ms, Prameela Sachdev, the retired Principal of Indira whi Girl's College to enrich our students from the ocean of her experience gs Gandhi Il as a mother, Dear students, after the a teacher, as a Principal, and above a presentation of the speaker you will have time to clear your doubts, till then be attentive, in good cheer and with an open heart and mind to accept what is good and applicable. Have a wonderful time.” With a smiling face Ms, Pramecla came to the dais and addressed the students, “Family is the most vital and sacred social institution where future generations are raised up. It is the prime institute through which common customs, practices, and values are shared to generations. Thus, it is through family, the strong foundations of a healthy society are laid. The belief that marriage is a ‘divine match’ or a ‘sacred union’ has contributed greatly to the peace and stability of Indian families. St. Chavara, a social reformer of nineteenth century believed that formation of good families is the best means to safeguard the well-being of the society and nation, He defined family as a communion of a few people joined together in blood relation and bound together by a special bond of love where the members exhibit mutual respect and practise obedience to parents and walk in peace before God and the people. According to him, family is a holy sanctuary which reflects abode of heaven, Protection of the family and promotion of its vision and sanctity are the responsibilities of all the members of a family. The quality of the future life of @ person greatly depends upon the chi e childh i intimacy ond love between the members are th aha nee eae effectiveness of the formation of a child. St. Ch ; anty that only through the family, avara wrote with certainty children grow in perfect love, peace, charity, and order. There are two kinds of families commonly found in India. A nuclear family which consists of parents and children, and a joint family or an extended family which 18 consists of children, their parents, and grandparents along with the families of uncles and aunts. Whichever may be the type of family, it is the mutual love and support that make the walls of the family stronger. Though, once joint family was prevalent and preferred by the Indian society but the present trend is towards having a nuclear family. The emergence of financially independent, career-oriented men and women who are confident of taking their own decisions and crave to have a sense of individual achievement, has greatly contributed to the rise of nuclear families. There are nuclear families which strictly keep up the family relationship warm and vibrant both with paternal and maternal source. But in general, nuclear families with decreased numbers of children make people more selfish and reserved. Present scenario has given way to unbelievable family disputes and carnages as testified by the local and national newspapers.” When Ms, Prameela gave a pause, it was Jatin who came up first with a query. “Ma'am, what do you think are the advantages of a joint family?” “There are many advantages of a joint family. Some of them are: In a joint family, we have better bonding within the family. There is always someone to take care of kids even if both the parents are working. © There is no need of rushing everywhere to get things done. Chores and tasks are shared. So, every individual gets time for themselves. © Whenever needed every member of the family offers a financial, emotional, or social support. © There are lots of kids to play, talk, and discuss all the happenings in your life, if you are scared to share them with your parents. © There are a variety of choices and inspirations from uncles and aunts and you can discuss your problems with them. * Children learn the virtues of co-operation and collective living which in turn help them in all phases of life Family festivals and occasions can be celebrated more elegantly, enhancing the prestige of all the members. In general, joint family ensures the happiness and well-being of all its members Sunil: But there must be some advantages of a nuclear family too. Ms. Prameela: Of course! There are. When you live in a nuclear family— Meera: Ms. Prameela: © There is ample freedom and space for each individual. So, decisions can be taken quickly and independently. * Woman gets time to plan and manage her house according to her own idea. Privacy is maintained * More attention is given to each other so development of personalities is more. © Finances of a family can be controlled and managed for future, * Children learn to become independent. Ma'am, if it is so, do you mean that there are no disadvantages for the joint families? Not at all! There are many disadvantages also when you live in a joint family. ° You need to think about its consequences upon each member before taking any major decision. Members of a joint family lack initiative because fruits of their initiative will ultimately be shared by other members who may be lazy and idle. Therefore, nobody puts in hard labour which is necessary for advancement in standard of living. Due to diverse temperaments, there are chances of conflicts between males and females or young and old. Asa large family has to live in a limited space, there is less privacy. As the responsibility for upbringing of children is shared, there is no family planning. ® * Joint family hinders the development of personality. The juniors do not get a chance to think independently to take any independent decision. Thus, development of personality is arrested. Divya Ma’am, do you mean that nuclear families are the best ones? There must be some disadvantages in the nuclear families too. Ms. Prameela: Yes of course. In a nuclear family— © Couples don’t get a chance to learn anything from their elders. Children don’t get adequate love and affection from their grandparents. Couples have to share all the responsibilities by themselves whether they possess its knowledge or not. Children may get spoilt because no elders are there at home to track their activities. Parents, grandparents, and children generally miss out on mutual understanding or a close relationship. Other family members are not close by to look after the children or help out the family in times of crisis. Growing children don’t get the values which should have been imparted to them in the early stages of their life. It doesn’t matter whether it is a joint or a nuclear family but what matters the most is the mindset of the family members. The concept of a nuclear family came into existence because it has some benefits. The concept of a joint family was prevalent because it had its own benefits. The tolerance and flexibility levels of people have been declining steadily in the joint families and thus, came into picture the need for ‘individual freedom.’ Everyone has started thinking “why should I adjust to the need of others.” Due to this lack of flexibility, people choose to split the families for a short term gain. But, in this Process, what they compromise is an easier and balanced life. It is Something like to take medicines for weight reduction rather than controlling on diet and doing physical activities. = When Ms, Prameela conclude + families are replica of their parents because they have 4 nucleal ae i 4 Rema Sica apt While in joint family, they interact, live, enjoy vi, Qn ae inheritil i . aoa uncles, and cousins inheriting required values and best ps their gral f ae : the family. all other persons 7 So, even if you are or even concern cour mindset and attitude. and you have a spirit of the joint fan H, in a nuclear family, Id be sufficient.
