CORMMSS

1. The document describes five potential scientific investigations that could be conducted to study different variables and their effects. It provides outlines for experiments on the effect of calcium ion concentration on rat growth, the effect of light exposure time on flower production, the effect of temperature on insulin production in bacteria, the effect of pH on yeast growth, and the effect of indoor vs outdoor housing on chicken growth. Each experiment outline follows the CORMMS format of controls, observations, repeats, measurements, and standardized conditions.

01.Describe an investigation to find out the effect of calcium ion concentration on

the growth in rats.

C – Different calcium concentration samples

O – Same age, same species same gender
R – Several rats, different groups
M1 – initial mass of rats
M2 – Mass increase day by day
S1 – Same type of food, same mass of food
S2 –Same temperature, same cage

Total – 06

Model Answer

Four different samples of calcium ion concentrations are created. A group of rats
from the same species are selected. The rats need to be of the same age and same
gender. Rats are separated into five groups and three rats are in each group. The
initial mass of all rats is recorded. A known calcium concentration was separately
added to the food and was provided for the respective four groups. The fifth group
is not given calcium (only food). The food needs to be of the same in type and in
the same mass. Additionally, the same temperature & same size of the cages are
maintained in every group. After two weeks final mass id measured and calculate
the percentage increase in mass. The experiment was repeated three times to get
a reliable result.

𝐹𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠−𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠

Percentage increase in mass = × 100%
𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠
02.Commercial flower growers keep their plants in greenhouses under artificial
light. Describe an investigation to find out if the length of time plant are
exposed to light effects how long it takes for flowers to appear.

C – Deferent light periods

O – Same species, same variety, same age

R – Repeat the experiment

M1 – time to produce flowers, number of flowers produce, how long to produce flowers

M2 – Days, weeks, months, clock

S1 – Same temperature, light intensity

S2 – CO2, water, humidity, nutrients, soil, pH

03.Describe an investigation to find out if temperature affects the amount if insulin
mad by genetically modified bacteria.

C – Different Temperatures, range of temperatures.

O – Same species, same mass, same number of bacteria

R – Repeat

M1 – measure insulin

M2 – concentration, mass, volume

S1- Same pH, same pH, same amount of O2

S2 – type of fermenter, sterile

Total – 06
04.Describe an experiment you could do to find out the effect of pH on the growth
of yeast.

M2 - time period stated in and out
S1 - Same type of food
S2 - same mass of food
