Nursing Leadership Practicum

The purpose of this 80-hour hospital practicum for graduate nursing students is to familiarize them with the nurse manager/director role and apply leadership concepts. Specifically, students will learn about healthcare organization and financing, quality improvement efforts, high-performance organizations, evidence-based practice, health IT, communication networks, and the importance of mission/vision. General Objectives:

The purpose of this practicum in a hospital setting is to familiarize graduate school of nursing students
with the functioning of a professional nurse manager/ director, and to apply the knowledge and concept
of leadership, administration and management in carrying out the nurses role as a futureleader.

Specific objective:

At the end of 80 hours practicum in a hospital setting, graduate school of nursing students will be able
to:

1. Identify how the health care organized and financed in a tertiary care facility.
2. Recognize the efforts for improving the quality of health care done I the institution.
3. Identify characteristics of the high- performance organization.
4. Recognize the efforts of the institution on using evidence- based nursing care and develop
an understanding of evidence and its use in decision making.
5. Identify current challenges (if there’s any) for health information technology applications.
6. Identify the role of informatics in evidence- based practices and patient safety.
7. Identify the common communication networks applied in a hospital.
8. Identify the barriers on communications and strategies to overcome it.
9. Recognize the need for nurses to be politically involved with the consume movement in
health care.
10. Understand the importance of an organizations’ mission and philosophy and the impact of
these on the structure and behaviour of the organization.
11. Articulate the importance of aligning the organization’s strategic vision both with its
mission, philosophy, values and also the communities and the stakeholders served.
12. Apply an understanding on the organizational structure used by the organization, and
identify the advantages as well as disadvantages of it.
13. Define conflict management in hospital setting, and identify any seen conflict situations.
14. Identify steps in the conflict management process.
15. Identify budget preparation process for health care organization.
16. Identify delegation, accountability, responsibility and supervision.
17. Identify organization’s responsibility for delegation and the chain of command.
18. Identify potential delegation barriers.
19. Explain how quality improvement affects the patient and the organization.
20. Relate how the principles of Quality Improvement are being implemented in the
organization.
21. Support ethical leadership and responsibility in professional practice.
