CHAPTER I

Introduction and Its Background

Introduction

Chalk is an important tool used primarily in classrooms for writing

and drawing on blackboards. Not only teachers use chalk but also artists in
making street art. Chalk is also used by children to maximize their ability to
learn and retain new information. It is a very handy tool used by many.
However, the chemical composition of chalk pose a threat not only to the
environment but also to people who uses it. Traditional chalk contributes to
environmental degradation due to its chemical composition and
manufacturing process. It can also cause adverse effects on human health.
In recent years the cost of chalk have also risen. These concerns have
prompted researchers to explore alternative materials. Among these
alternatives, eggshells have emerged as a compelling candidate due to its
abundance, low cost and eco-friendly attributes. As the need for sustainable
alternatives becomes increasingly apparent, researchers and educators alike
are exploring innovative solutions to minimize environmental harm while
maintaining educational standards.

It was found that eggshells can effectively be used to make chalk.

They can serve as a cost-effective alternative to commercial chalk due to
their lower price. Additionally, the qualities and properties of chicken
eggshell are proven to be good as stated by Jayashree Premkumar (2021), As
chalk is composed of Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) that allows us to draw on

a surface using chalk. Eggshells also contain calcium carbonate which is
why you can convert them into chalk. Therefore, we came to the conclusion
that we could produce chalk for less money using materials that are already
in our house by using the shells of chicken eggs.

According to Lisa W. (2022), eggshell chalk can be used for a variety of

purposes, including drawing, painting, and writing. It can also be used to
create three-dimensional art pieces. Eggshell chalk has numerous benefits,
one of which is that eggshell chalk is opaquer and more vibrant, making it
deal for use on blackboards or other black surfaces. Together with this,
Eggshell is basically presenting a healthy probably the best natural source
of calcium because of its balanced calcium due to its amount of mineral. It
also gave us an idea to produce an “Egg Shalk” short for egg chalk, and in
line with this an eggshell is the hard covering on the outside of an egg. It is a
semipermeable membrane, which means that air and moisture can pass
through its pores. Eggshell waste is fundamentally composed of calcium
carbonate, and has the potential to be used as a raw material in the
production of homemade and easy chalk. Eggshell chalk is created by
carefully collecting and cleaning discarded eggshells. Based on Egg chalk, A
Substitute for Commercial Chalk (2023), Eggshell is 94% calcium carbonate
that is made out from variety of substances which made it a possible
alternative ingredient in making a chalk. It is tested in blackboard or
pavement to identify the level of effectiveness of eggshell based chalk.

One of the primary advantages of eggshell chalk is its sustainability. By

repurposing eggshells that would otherwise be discarded, this chalk reduces
waste and promotes a circular economy. Furthermore, eggshell chalk is
biodegradable, ensuring that it won’t contribute to pollution when it breaks

offers a smooth writing experience with vibrant colors. The natural porosity
of eggshells allows the chalk to write effortlessly on various surfaces, such
as blackboards and sidewalks. In conclusion, eggshell chalk is an innovative
and eco-friendly alternative to traditional chalk. Embrace the future of chalk
with eggshell chalk and contribute to a greener, more sustainable world.

In this study, the primary objective is to investigate the practicality of

utilizing eggshells as a substitute ingredient in chalk production. First and
foremost, the study will assess the level of effectiveness in terms of quality,
durability, and texture of chalk produced with eggshells as an alternative
ingredient. These criteria are vital indicators of the overall performance and
usability of the eggshell-infused chalk. Additionally, the research aims to
compare the effectiveness of eggshell chalk to that of commercially available
chalk. Lastly, the study will investigate whether there exists a significant
difference between chalk made from eggshells and conventional commercial
chalk.

This study delves into utilizing eggshells as an alternative in chalk

production to explore an eco-friendly option that addresses environmental
issues associated with traditional methods. Moreover, the research aims to
offer practical advantages for educators, industries, and policymakers by
proposing a viable solution that repurposes waste material, promoting
resource efficiency, ecological preservation and mitigate environmental
pollution. The main reason the researchers choose this experiment is
because of it’s contribution to the environment. It is most of all eco-friendly,
meaning it is natural and not artificial. Through this research, we endeavor
to contribute to the growing body of knowledge of sustainable practices in

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of Eggshells as an

alternative Ingredient in Chalk. This study seeks to make a chalk made with
Eggshells with the same quality as the traditional chalk.

Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions:

Teacher- This will benefit the teachers since chalks are very essentials in
their everyday teaching. They can use it in their daily teaching and so they
don’t have to buy commercial chalk.

Students- In this research student is the second important person to use

this product. This will benefit the students as it provides insight into a
potential alternative ingredient in chalk, fostering a deeper understanding of
materials used in education.

Community- This study will reduce Eggshell waste in the community,

especially for individuals who enjoy eating eggs, and it will be very beneficial
to have an alternate component for manufacturing chalk that is readily
available in our region.

Present Researchers- This study will serve as a guide for the researcher’s
study. It will also bring new knowledge to them as researchers who seek
knowledge.

Future Researchers- In this research, future researchers will help this

study to identify their similar or related research’s and will serve as a
reference. The findings of this study will serve as a guide in finding
information for their future study. It will pave the way for more expounded
studies on similar field.

Scope and Limitation

This study will determine the findings of the effectiveness of using

eggshells as an alternative ingredient in chalk. The study limited only to
Senior High School students enrolled at Itawes National High School. We

choose this study to discover other ways for us to make chalks that is both
inexpensive and easy to make using recyclable materials. The researcher’s
goal is to save money, time and effort. The researchers found this accessible
because the researchers can find this materials anywhere.

Definition of Terms

Calcium carbonate- is a chemical compound found in rocks, shells, and

minerals. It’s commonly used in supplements and food additives. In nature,
it forms materials like limestone, marble, and eggshells.

Chalk- is a soft, white, porous sedimentary carbonate rock, a form of

limestone composed of the mineral calcite. In research, it’s often used as
metaphor for something temporary or easily erased, implying that findings
or conclusions might not be permanent or definitive.

Durability- is about how strong and lasting the eggshell chalk is.

Eggshells- are the hard, outer covering of eggs laid by birds, reptiles, and
some other animals. They provide protection for the developing embryo
inside the egg and are primarily composed of calcium carbonate and it use
as the main ingredient of the researchers product.

Flour- is a finely ground powder made by milling grains, seeds, or roots. It’s
commonly used in cooking and baking to make doughs, batters, and other
food products.

Review of Related Literature

Eggshell

The study conducted by Hablero, Ilagan, Legaspi, Saludaga, and

Villarin (2020), highlights the pressing issue of the significant daily

production of 4.24 million metric tons of chicken eggs in the Philippines,

leading to substantial waste in the form of discarded eggshells. This waste

contributes to the country’s environmental crisis, exacerbated by improper

garbage disposal practices. The researchers observed the prevalent use of

commercial chalk in schools, prompting them to seek a more cost-effective,

natural, and environmentally friendly alternative. Their investigation

revealed that chicken eggshells contain compounds similar to those found in

conventional chalk, laying the foundation for a potential substitute. This

research aims to address the environmental impact of discarded eggshells

by proposing an innovative solution that not only repurposes this waste but

also provides a viable alternative to commercially used chalk. The findings of

this study could have significant implications for reducing waste and

promoting sustainability in educational settings.

Alipio, M. (2019) evaluated the feasibility of eggshells as alternative

shielding material against diagnostic X-rays. Due to the advancement in

diagnostic imaging, providing shielding against X-rays has become one of

the concerns in the field of Radiology. Although lead has been used

extensively as a shielding material, it is expensive and harmful to both

people and the environment. To do this, eggshells we gathered, pulverized,

sieved, then combined with increasing amounts of cement and water.

Radiographic analysis was used to evaluate the shields’ effectiveness. The

results showed that adding more eggshells improved the shielding

effectiveness; however, larger X-ray intensities demand more shielding.

Nevertheless, a similar outcome was obtained with the performance of the

ordinary lead shield and the shield with the most eggshells. He then

concluded that the eggshells can be used as alternative shielding material

against diagnostic X-rays.

According to Laohavisuti, N., Boonchom, B., Boonmee, W., Chaiseeda,

K., & Seesanong, S, (2021) attempted to convert this eggshell waste into low-

or high-purity calcium carbonate grades by washing, crushing, and drying

to use as raw materials for manufacturing highly valuable calcium

phosphate products to reduce andutilize these wastes. While high-purity

calcium carbonate grade was used to produce dicalcium

phosphatedihydrate, monocalcium phosphate monohydrate, and tricalcium

phosphate in the mineral feed and food additiveindustries, low-purity

calcium carbonate grade was used to prepare triple superphosphate for use

in the fertilizerindustry. All calcium phosphate samples were identified, and

their structural phrases and impurities by XRF, XRD, FTIR techniques, and

a quick, inespensive, and environmentally safe methodinvolving eggshells.

By turning eggshell into highly valuable products, the procedure discussed

in their study will be helpful for managing eggshell waste in both

communities and industries. This result lends credence to the idea of zero

waste production to create products with added value in order to achieve

sustainable development, which may be chosen as an alternative method of

material recycling and waste management in the future.

According to Butcher and Miles (2019), the average excellent quality

eggshell from commercial layers has about 2.2 grams of calcium carbonate.

It is a well-known fact that calcium carbonate accounts for approximately

95% of the dry eggshell. Which is a key component in making chalks.

In the research of Aditya et al. (2021), it is stated that increased

consumption and usage of chicken eggs globally results in an increase in

the amount of discarded egg waste, mostly eggshell and eggshell membrane.

The environmental effect of producing these huge waste products is a big

concern. From an industrial standpoint, as the output of chicken eggs

increases, so does the amount of eggshell debris. Because they are high in

organic and inorganic components, discarded eggshells, which are now

considered waste and of no value, might be used in a variety of ways.

According to Waheed (2019), eggshells have proven to be very recyclable

friendly waste by using its high calcium mineral and utilizing it to create a

new product.

Another study of this have proved that in terms of production flexibility,

the properties of eggshells fits it best, as they were able to create calcium

phosphates for various industries like agriculture (Laohavisuti et al., 2021).

for a variety of purposes, including fertilizer, face masks, skin irritation

therapy, and cleanser. It is made of a variety of materials but is 94%

calcium carbonate, making it a suitable alternative material in creating

chalk. It is tested on a chalkboard and pavement to see whether eggshell-

based chalk is an effective substitute for commercial chalk. The results

demonstrated that eggshell chalk did not perform at all on a chalkboard and

actually harmed it, as seen by the scratches on its surface. The eggshell

chalk, on the other hand, works on the pavement, as seen by the vivid mark

it left, which also lasted a long time during their experimentation process.

A study conducted by Eliezer Allapitan et al., (2020), they found out that

eggshells are the hard outer coverings of eggs and are usually thrown away

after getting rid of the yolk and the white. Due to the similarities on the

composition and quality of commercial chalk and an eggshell, eggshell can

be a substitute in making chalk.

Chalk

Here in the Philippines, regionally and locally most schools prefer to

use it over whiteboards and markers. One of the aims of this study is to

provide a sustainable way to create a chalk especially for the private school

teachers who may lack the allowance to buy, it due to having minimal

support compared to public school teachers (Cruz, 2019).

Globally, chalk is still considered as one of the most preferred use of

teaching material when educating a large class, especially in math classes

where it was mostly used. It is said that mathematicians prefer using a

blackboard and a chalk due to the fact that is considered the best tool to

use in engaging our minds for mathematical collaborations. (Moskowitz,

2021).

The use of chalks and blackboards outweigh whiteboards in many

developing nations for the reason that they are cheaper to acquire in regards

to accessibility. In east Asia, the use of chalks in classroom are also very

common sight to see, specifically in China, Japan, South Korea. As it is

more important in their language to have a proper penmanship with

complicated characters as part of the articulation of the word. An example of

these is the Chinese letters which are substantially thicker. Because of this,

writing with chalk is a more accurate representation of traditional brush

calligraphy for their language (Fowler, 2021).

According to the Observatory of Economic Complexity (2020), otherwise

known as “OEC”, states that the Philippines have become the 100 th largest

importer of chalk in the world. By having a number of 34.8k dollars at the

beginning of the year 2020.

According to Cueto (2019), the investigation was intended to produce

chalk by crushing the eggshells. It can be a useful and eco-friendly product

and can contribute excellently to our community. Through this research, the

researcher studied the characteristics of eggshell and examined that it can

be great specimen in our investigatory project. The researcher discovered

that eggshells have an amazing quality as an alternative to the common

ingredient of chalk. She highly recommends using this finished product

because aside from its cheapness, it is also easier to produce, eco-friendly,

recyclable and has the potential to make our study easier and clearer.

demand for commercial chalk declines or if the prices rises, the chicken

eggshell is thus quite similar to commercial chalk in several ways.

According to the study conducted by Suzanne Wong (2020), making

eggshell chalk is simple and quick. The challenge lies in grinding the

eggshells into a fine powder, which can be a bit tough. Wong offers practical

solutions to ease this process. She recommends using a coffee grinder,

known foe its versatility it transforming eggshells into a smooth, shell-free

powder. For those without a coffee grinder, Wong suggests using a mortar

and pestle or placing cleaned eggshells in a strong zip-close bag and using a

rolling pin. These alternatives make the process easier and are accessible

with everyday items. In summary, Wong’s insights provide various

straightforward methods to simplify the transformation of eggshells into

chalk, ensuring ease of use for different situations and resources.

According to Ashley (2020), concluded and points out that eggshell chalk

is highly abrasive, capable of causing scratches or damage to items. This

characteristic makes it most suitable for application on sidewalks. It’s

important to know that the level of abrasiveness is linked to the fineness of

the ground eggshells, finer grinding results is less abrasive eggshell chalk.

Based on Raft Organization (2020), Calcuim carbonate (CaCO3) is a

mineral that is widely found in limestone and can be used to manufacture

sidewalk chalk. Chalks produced from chicken eggshells are simple to make;

they perform well on sidewalks and asphalt blacktop but are too rough for

blackboards.

Texture

According to Upstart Media (2023), calcium carbonate is the main

ingredient of do-it-yourself chalk or sidewalks chalk which is a form of

or commercialized chalk that the egg chalk also possesses, that’s why we

can also turn it into chalk. This chemical is the reason behind why we can

draw on the pavement or rough surfaces using a piece of chalk.

Based on the findings of Trinidad (2019), the chicken eggshell chalk

possesses certain characteristics that make it a viable substitute ingredient.

These includes its erasability, reduced scratchiness when used, and its

ability to be strong and solid. Consequently, the chicken eggshell chalk

shares similarities with commercial chalk in various aspects, making it a

possible alternative when there is a decrease in demand or an increase in

price for commercial chalk. Nevertheless, there are areas that require

improvement, such as the clarity of the chalk when writing and its overall

texture. The utilization of chicken eggshell as a chalk proved to be

unsuccessful due to certain inherent limitations. Unlike commercial chalk,

this product does not erase easily, and even after attempting to remove it

from a blackboard. Traces of the chalk remain. As a result, while it may be

suitable for street art applications, it is not suitable for classroom use. A

blackboard was scratched with eggshell chalk leaves a vivid imprint o the

pavement that lasts for avery long time, proving that it is effective ther

Research Methodology

This presents the methodology adopted in conduct of this study. It

composes the following: research design, locale of the study, respondents,

sampling procedure research instrument, data gathering procedure,

statistical tool, and analysis of data.

Research Design

This study employs an experimental design to evaluate eggshell chalk

as an alternative to traditional chalk. The chosen design facilitates the

exploration of its characteristics, including quality, durability, and texture,

revealing its potential as a substitute in chalk production. This study

employed the process to analyze the effectiveness of Eggshells as an

alternative ingredient to chalk.

Locale of the Study

This study will be conduct at Itawes National High School Alabug,

Tuao, Cagayan during the school year 2023-2024.

The respondents of this study are the total enumeration of the Senior

High School teacher’s of Itawes National High School. They will help the

researchers gather the needed data for the study.

Sampling Procedure

The researchers will use a total population sampling procedure to

gather the respondents who will be survey to determine the acceptability of

eggshell waste as an alternative to chalk, and to evaluate eggshell waste as

chalk in terms of its features.

Research Instrument

The research instrument we will use to collect data is a survey-

questionnaire based on the acceptability of eggshells as an alternative

ingredient for Chalk.

Data Gathering Procedure

I. Developing

As the researchers aim to develop a substitute chalk, they prepare all the

ingredient and materials needed in developing chalk out of eggshells, remove

their thin membrane, and dry the eggshells. Crush the eggshells very well

until they become a powder. When the eggshells are already crushed, put 1

tablespoons of crushed eggshells in a mixing bowl, 1-1/2 teaspoons of hot

water, add 1 teaspoon of flour, add 1 drop of food color (optional), mix until

the ingredient fully combine with each other. Then after that, form a stick of

egg chalk that you make, out it in a paper towel, roll it, and let it fully dry

for a few days.

II. Gathering data

As the researchers already develop the product, they are going to ask the

selected respondents in the chosen location using surveys which are paper-

based methods. The researchers use survey questionnaires to collect the

responses to determine the effectiveness, differences and similarities

between the two main variables to test the quality, durability, and texture of

the product.

III. Analyzing

After the respondents answer the questionnaire, the researchers collect

their responses and will validate and analyze their answers involving three

variables of the study. The researchers observe what happens to the survey

questionnaire and the data gather to develop a strong result at the end of

the study. The conducted responses and answers from the subject of the

study compare the two related products, and also the researchers determine

if those responses have the capacity to address the expected outcome of the

study.

IV. Evaluating

The result of the gathered data may prove or disprove the study. The

researchers will use the suggest and right formulas to determine the level of

efficiency of using the proposed chalk made from chicken eggshells, which

can be described in terms of it’s quality, durability and texture.

Statistical Tool

Mean is the statistical tool that is use to analyze and interpret the

data. This is use to present the level of responses gathered for determining

the effectiveness of Eggshell as an alternative ingredient to Chalk. They used

T-test as statistical tool in testing the difference between Eggshell Chalk and

traditional Chalk. For the interpretation of computed mean, the following

obituary points was used based on the 4-point likert scale:

Data Analysis

Using the data that will gather, data analysis plan is encompass a number

of procedures leading to the findings and results of the study about the

acceptability of eggshell chalk as an alternative ingredient to chalk that is

observed as follow:

1.Summarizing the numerical data. This will be done through finding the

mean that is based on the certain respondents in the survey questionnaire.

2.Mathematical/ statistical interpretation of the summarize data using the

number of Senior High School teacher’s at Itawes National High School and

their responses.
