Circle Construction with Compass Guide

The document provides instructions on how to construct a circle using a compass and defines related terms. It explains that a compass has two arms - a fixed arm with a point at the center and a movable arm that can be adjusted to draw the circle. It then lists key facts about circles: the center is the point around which the circle is drawn; the circumference is the curved boundary line; the radius is the distance from the center to the circumference; and the diameter crosses through the center and touches opposite points on the circumference. It also defines other circle terms like semicircle, arc, chord, and pi (π).

HANDOUT - 6 1st Term (2022-2023)

Name: Class: V Roll: Section:

Subject: Geometry Teachers: Sadia.S.K/Tanzima.S/Sigma.H Date:

Construction Of Circle Using Compass and related Facts

1) Circle: A circle is a closed figure or a plane shape made up of a curved line. Every point on this

curved line is at equal distance from the centre of the circle. A compass is used to draw a

perfect circle.

2) Compass: A compass has two arms:

i) fixed arm and ii) movable arm

* The fixed arm has a metal point which remains fixed at the centre.

* The other arm can hold the pencil tightly in the pencil holder and you can stretch this arm to the

desired length.

Parts of compass:

How to draw a circle using compass:

* Place the metal point (the fixed arm) at a point which you want to be the centre of the circle.

* Expand or stretch the movable arm to the desired distance.

* Move the pencil around the fixed point (the centre of the circle) of the compass.

* Rotate and come back to the starting point.

3. Facts of circle:

Circle APB with a centre O.

a. Centre: A circle is made around a point called the centre.

b. Circumference: The curved line which is the boundary of the circle is called circumference.

c. Radius: The distance between the centre and the circumference is called the radius. It is
marked with ‘r’. The plural of radius is ‘radii’. Here AO = OB = OP = r

d. Diameter: The line that crosses through the centre and touches two opposite points on the
circumference is called diameter. The diameter divides the circle into 2 halves or 2
semicircles. It is marked with ‘d’. Here AB = d.

e. Semicircle: Half of a circle is called semicircle (Figure 3)

f. Arc: A part of a circumference of a circle is called an arc. Here, PB is an arc.

g. Chord: The distance between two points on the circumference is called a chord. AX is a chord.

* The largest chord in a circle is the diameter.

h. All the diameters and all the radii in a circle are of the same length.

i. A diameter is double the length of its radius.

∴ We can write,

d = 2r

𝑑
or r =
2

Example: If radius is 3 cm in a circle, diameter will be double the radius that is 2r or 2 × 3 = 6 cm.

𝑑 8
If diameter is 8 cm, radius will be half of the diameter, that is or = 4 cm.

j. Pi (π) Pi (π) is the 16th letter of Greek alphabets. In mathematics it is used to represent a

constant number 3.14159.

When the circumference of a circle is divided by its diameter, we get the value of

pi(π). The value of pi (π) is constant for any circle.

It is an irrational number, i.e. it has an infinite decimal with no set of consecutive digits

22
repeating itself indefinitely. But sometimes we use the fraction in our calculation
7

as it gives us a close approximate of the original value of pi (π).

𝐶𝑖𝑟𝑐𝑢𝑚𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 22
∴ Pi (π) = = 3.14159 or
𝐷𝑖𝑎𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟 7
