AXIOMS/POSTULATES

AND THEOREMS
PREPARED BY JERRY MAE A. RANES
AXIOMS OR POSTULATES

A statement which is accepted as true without proof.

These statements can be used as reasons in proving some
mathematical statements.
THEOREM

A theorem is a statement that can be proven. Once a

theorem is proven, it can also be used as a reason in
proving other statements.
AXIOMS/POSTULATES
POSTULATE #1

A line contains at least 𝐴

two points.

Example: Line ℎ
𝐵
contains points 𝐴 and 𝐵.

AXIOMS/POSTULATES
POSTULATE #2
A plane contains at least three
non-collinear points. 𝐴

Example: Through points 𝐴, 𝐵, 𝐶

and 𝐶, there is exactly one
plane (plane 𝐷). Plane 𝐷 𝐵
𝐷
contains at least three (3) non-
collinear points.
AXIOMS/POSTULATES
POSTULATE #3

Through any two points, 𝐴

there is exactly one line.

Example: Two points 𝐵

determine a line.

AXIOMS/POSTULATES
POSTULATE #4

Through any three (3) non-

𝐴
collinear points, there is
exactly one plane. 𝐵

Example: Through points 𝐴, 𝐶

𝐵, and 𝐶, there is exactly one 𝐷
plane, plane 𝐷.
AXIOMS/POSTULATES
POSTULATE #5

If two points lie in the

plane, then the line joining 𝐵
them lies in that plane.
𝐴
Example: 𝐴𝐵 lies in plane 𝐶. 𝐶
AXIOMS/POSTULATES
POSTULATE #6

If two planes intersect, 𝐴

𝐷
then their intersection is a 𝐶
line.

Example: Plane 𝐶 and 𝐷

intersects at 𝐴𝐵. 𝐵
THEOREMS
THEOREM #1

If two lines intersect, then 𝐴 𝐷

they intersect at exactly
𝐸
one point. 𝐵

Example: 𝐴𝐶 intersects 𝐵𝐷
at point 𝐸. Point 𝐸 is the
𝐶
point of intersection.
THEOREMS
THEOREM #2

If a point lies outside a line,

𝐷
then exactly one plane 𝐵
contains both the line and
the point. 𝐴
𝐶
Example: Plane 𝐶 contains
𝐴𝐵 and point 𝐷.
THEOREMS
THEOREM #3

If two lines intersect, then 𝑎 𝑏

exactly one plane contains
both lines. 𝐸

Example: The intersection of

𝐶
line 𝑎 and 𝑏 contains in plane
𝐶.
