CONCEPT: One of the major teachings of Osho is silence that can
be achieved through meditation. Man’s speech, actions and

nature. The planning and design of the resort complex bond to this
ideology by creating fluid interactions among a many more of
green open spaces, shaded walkways, and closed spaces; the

people can enjoy solitude.

consisting of various spaces like the meditation hall, cafes,
multiversity, guest houses within the fringes of the Zen garden,
green-shaded walkways, pools, and parks. The entire complex is
strewn with symmetrical pyramid-shaped blocks.

STRUCTURE DETAIL:

• The four pairs of sickle-shaped, 38m high reinforced

concrete piers are the principal load bearing
components of the superstructure. Every pair of piers has a
width of 2.1 m. Their thickness is 40 cm above ground level
and ranges from 40 cm below to 70 cm below. In 1980, in
the Matrimandir workshop, the steel framework of the
twin spiral ramps and, later, the construction crane were
made. That same year, they were mounted at their
respective locations.
• The building crane, erected in 1980, had to raise the
prefabricated concrete beams, each weighing half a
ton, into place. They all form the space-frame that gives
the spherical shape of the Matrimandir and supports its
outer shell and inner skin Using "lost" ferrocement shuttering,
the "nodes" which connect six beams together were
cast insitu.

CONCEPT AND SITE PLANING:

• Fariborz Sahba developed the project for the temple inspired

conceptually by this flower which symbolizes purity and cleanliness in
Hindu tradition.
• This concept had to be converted into defined geometric forms, such
as spheres, cylinders, toroid's and cones, which were translated into
equations and later used as a base for the structural analysis and
engineering plans.
• The resulting geometry was so complex that the plans for the temple
took two and a half years to complete.
• Lotus flower signifies purity and peace. This symbol gives a modem and
contemporary form in the structure of the temple drawing into its
sanctum, the people from different races, cultures, and religions from
all around the world. The building follows the form of the lotus petals
and the pond signifies the water body that the lotus grows in.

TOPOGRAPHY:

naturally towards north east direction.
• The level difference between n-e and

access to nine doors.
• The doorways lead to a central area that reaches 40 meters in height,

• The temple is surrounded by gardens and its location in the center of
the ponds creates the impression of a giant lotus flower floating on the
water. Along with the nine ponds around the temple and the gardens,
the area occupied by the Lotus Temple is 105,000 sq.m.
• The external covering of white marble ensures the building is visible
from a distance and shines with the rays of the sun, turning violet at
sunset.
