1.0 INTRODUCTION

g e n e r a l l y a c c e p t e d s e t of t h e r m o d y n a m i c p r o p e r t i e s f o r t h e c o n s t i t u -
e n t s of the w o r k i n g f l u i d s o r m e t h o d f o r m a k i n g t h e r m o d y n a m i c c a l c u -
l a t i o n s . T h e r e f o r e , e a c h s e g m e n t of t h e i n d u s t r y f r o m m a n u f a c t u r e r
t h r o u g h u s e r ~nay u s e s l i g h t l y d i f f e r e n t b a s i c t h e r m o d y n a m i c d a t a and
c a l c u l a t i o n m e t h o d s to a r r i v e at the t h e r m o d y n a m i c p r o p e r t i e s . T h e
p r e s e n t c o n d i t i o n is s i m i l a r to t h a t w h i c h e x i s t e d in t h e r o c k e t m o t o r
i n d u s t r y p r i o r to t h e w o r k of the I C R P G (Ref. 1) in e s t a b l i s h i n g
m e t h o d s for p e r f o r m a n c e calculations and data reduction.
A s the o p e r a t i n g e n v i r o n m e n t of g a s t u r b i n e e n g i n e s h a s g o n e ,to
h i g h e r t e m p e r a t u r e s and M a c h N u m b e r s , t h e d i f f e r e n c e s in p e r f o r m -
a n c e of c o m p e t i t i v e e n g i n e s a r e o f t e n q u i t e s m a l l . In fact, s o m e p e r -
f o r m a n c e d i f f e r e n c e s a r e of t h e s a m e o r d e r of m a g n i t u d e a s the
c h a n g e t h a t m a y b e e x p e c t e d f r o m u s i n g d i f f e r e n t s e t s of t h e r m o -
d y n a m i c p r o p e r t i e s of t h e c o n s t i t u e n t s in t h e w o r k i n g f l u i d s . A l s o
b e c a u s e of the i n c r e a s e d i n t e r a c t i o n b e t w e e n t h e e n g i n e and o t h e r
c o m p o n e n t s of t h e a i r f r a m e , t h e n e e d f o r a c o n s i s t e n t m e t h o d of
a r r i v i n g at t h e r m o d y n a m i c p r o p e r t i e s b e c o m e s e v e n m o r e i m p o r t a n t .

T h e p r e s s u r e - t e m p e r a t u r e r e g i m e f o r a i r as a w o r k i n g f l u i d is
s h o w n in F i g . 1. T h e r e g i m e is f r o m 0 . 1 to 600 p s i a and f r o m 300
to 1 , 8 0 0 ° R . T h e s e l i m i t s w e r e d e t e r m i n e d f r o m c u r r e n t and p r o j e c t e d
f u t u r e r e q u i r e m e n t s f o r a i r as a w o r k i n g fluid in t u r b i n e e n g i n e s . A

The m o d e l is divided into two sections, one calculates the air prop-
erties and the other calculates the exhaust gas properties. T h e m o d e l
initially decides which section is required f r o m the value of the fuel-to-
air ratio (f). If the value is zero, then the calculation of t h e r m o d y n a m i c
properties is m a d e for air; if a positive value is presented, then
properties for exhaust gas are calculated (if by accident a negative
value is input, the p r o g r a m prints an error m e s s a g e and the value of
"f"). F o r the calculation of the t h e r m o d y n a m i c properties of air, the
required input data are the k n o w n value of air temperature and pres-
sure and zero for the fuel heating value, fuel-to-air ratio, enthalpy,
and X K O N . With the value of "f" equal to zero, the p r o g r a m begins
the calculation of air properties in subroutine T H E R M O w h e r e the
m o l a r composition of air is located as well as the molecular weights
for the constituents of air and the fixed molecular weight of air. T h e

INFLUENCE OF CHEMICAL MODEL ON AFTERBURNER
EFFICIENCY CALCULATIONS
In r e c e n t y e a r s , t h e r e h a s b e e n s o m e v a r i a t i o n s in the c h e m i c a l
m o d e l u s e d to d e t e r m i n e t u r b i n e e n g i n e p e r f o r m a n c e f o r t h e c a s e of
l o w e f f i c i e n c i e s in a f t e r b u r n e r t e s t s . A c o m p a r i s o n of s e v e r a l c h e m i -
c a l m o d e l s w a s m a d e to d e t e r m i n e t h e d i f f e r e n c e s in t h e c a l c u l a t e d
afterburner efficiency. Four models were investigated as follows:
1. No e f f e c t s of c h e m i c a l d i s s o c i a t i o n , but w i t h p r e -
s c r i b e d p r o p o r t i o n s of CO,
2. No e f f e c t s of c h e m i c a l d i s s o c i a t i o n , but w i t h p r e -
s c r i b e d q u a n t i t i e s of u n b u r n e d f u e l in the e x h a u s t ,
3. C o m p l e t e c h e m i c a l e q u i l i b r i u m , and
4. C o m p l e t e c h e m i c a l e q u i l i b r i u m , but w i t h p r e s c r i b e d
q u a n t i t i e s of u n b u r n e d f u e l in t h e e x h a u s t .
C a l c u l a t i o n s w e r e c a r r i e d out w i t h t h e m o d e l s m o d i f i e d to i n c l u d e
o b s e r v e d ( R e f s . 26 to 29) h i g h l e v e l s of c a r b o n m o n o x i d e (CO) a n d u n -
b u r n e d f u e l ( a s CH2 in the m o d e l ) . In t h e l i m i t , e i t h e r of t h e s e s p e c i e s
c a n r e p r e s e n t t h e e f f e c t s of l e s s t h a n i d e a l c o m b u s t i o n e f f i c i e n c y . T h e
c o m p u t e r m o d e l was b a s i c a l l y a r e a l gas Rayleigh line heat addition
m o d e l w i t h e x h a u s t c o n d i t i o n s and c o m p o s i t i o n d e f i n e d b y t h e p r o g r a m
of Ref. 18.
M o d e l (1) w a s c h o s e n to p r o v i d e t h e b a s e l i n e c a l c u l a t i o n s . T h e
c a l c u l a t e d inlet, c o n d i t i o n s f o r t h e a f t e r b u r n e r a r e l i s t e d in T a b l e A - 1 .
It w a s a s s u m e d t h a t t h e i n l e t ' f u e l / a i r r a t i o w o u l d be i n c r e a s e d to
0 . 0 6 in t h e a f t e r b u r n e r . T h e i n l e t t e m p e r a t u r e a n d p r e s s u r e w e r e
a s s u m e d to be 1 , 3 0 0 ° R and 0 . 5 a t m , r e s p e c t i v e l y , a n d t h e i n l e t NIach
n u m b e r was 0.2.
C a l c u l a t i o n s w e r e c a r r i e d out a s s u m i n g t h a t a p r e s c r i b e d p r o -
