Greetings
Good day class. How are you today?
Prayer
Before we start, please all stand up and let us pray.
Dear Lord and Father of all, thank you for today, thank you for ways which you provide
for us all. For Your protection and love, We thank you. Help us to focus our hearts and
minds now on what we are about to learn. Inspire us by Your Holy Spirit as we listen and
write. Guide us by Your eternal light as we discover more about the world around us.
We ask all this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
Motivation
Let us suppose you received the letter from your grandmother, inviting you to
spend your Christmas vacation with her next year. Read and examine it closely.
My dear apo,
How are you? Have you made any plans for Christmas vacation next year?
Hopefully, COVID will have been gone by that time.
As you know, San Pedro, Laguna is celebrating its town fiesta every December.
This year's celebration is just postponed due to some health measures, but next year,
for sure, we will be celebrating the fun. There will be lots of food. I heard that the town
mayor has organized some activities such as a variety show. I'm sure it would be fun!
Your cousins from Makati are coming over for the fiesta. Would you like to come over
too?
I know that you would be traveling alone if you plan to come here. Just go to the
pier and buy a ticket. I can't wait to see you after several months of quarantine. You
must have grown bigger already.
Much love, Lola Precy
Let us assume that this will be your first time visiting your grandmother's place. What is
lacking in her letter?
Are you familiar with the story of Bella and Edward in the Twilight book series? Have
you ever asked yourself, "What happened to the character of Edward?" How does the
story about vampires, werewolves, and love make you feel? If you are familiar with the
story and have tried to analyze at least one element, in a way, you are doing a book
review.
Lesson Proper
A book review is a thorough description, critical analysis, and/or evaluation of the
quality, meaning, and significance of a book, often written in relation to prior research on the
topic.
Here are the four basic elements discussed in a book review:
1. Plot It is the action of the story.
2. Characterization - It is the people or animals in a story.
3. Setting - It is the time and place of the story.
4. Theme - It is the author's statement or lesson about life.
A book review observes the following writing guidelines:
1. Prewriting - In this stage, you are choosing your subject and gathering the details that you
need.
2. Writing - In this part, you are now writing your first draft.
3. Revising - Here, you are now improving your writing.
4. Editing - In this stage, you have to check your style and accuracy.
The body of a book review consists of:
Beginning, where the opening lines set the scene for the rest of your review. Then we
have the middle that bears specific examples from the novel supporting the focus. And of
course, we have the ending. It is in the ending where you suggest the outcome but do not give
it away.
Remember, the main purpose of a book or article review is to broaden the knowledge
base and understanding of a topic.
As a guide, here is a sample book review for you:
Christmas Card Murder
Leslie Meier
Lee Hollis
Peggy Ehrhart
Kensington (Oct 27, 2020)
Hardcover $26.00 (320pp)

In Leslie Meier, Lee Hollis, and Peggy Ehrhart's cozy novella collection Christmas Card
Murder, strong women follow holiday clues to solve crimes in their communities.
Nothing spices up the holidays like getting the gal pals together to solve a small- town
murder. These three novellas are driven by capable, determined women who juggle a variety of
important roles in their neighborhoods. They are all aided by their journalism skills and tight-
knit friend groups, which combine for engaging narratives around their mystery- solving
processes.
Each crime is linked to a Christmas card, and the holiday atmosphere is portrayed in
descriptions of decorations, cozy fires, and familiar traditions. Feminist undertones are present
in the first story, "Christmas Card Murder," about expectations related to women's behavior
over generations; in side-by-side plot lines, systematic justice is questioned. Because of its
details and activity, the story is both full and deep.
In "Death of a Christmas Carol," love and fidelity are put to the test as three empathetic
women confess their relationship fears to each other following a scandalous claim. The story's
suspense is driven by the women's anxieties and unexpected revelations and followed up with a
clear-cut resolution. Interludes in the form of local news articles are included, their cutesy
background stories enhancing the story alongside usable recipes for festive drinks and snacks.
Mother and daughter dynamics are highlighted during "Death of a Christmas Card
Crafter" alongside observations on friendship and scorned love. A few twists result in a surprise
ending, though some characters are forgotten along the way. The story centers on crafting a
group, Knit and Nibble, that can be replicated thanks to the story's included instructions for a
doll sweater and chocolate cake, both inspired by its events. Christmas Card Murder is an
entertaining cozy mystery Christmas collection ruled by multifaceted, empowered women.
