EVS Handout- Food We Eat
Food gives us energy to work and play. It keeps us fit and active. We eat
cereals, pulses, fruits and vegetables to grow and stay healthy. Food contains
nutrients which are useful for our body.
The food we eat comes from plants and animals.

• People who eat only plants and their products are called vegetarians. They
eat rice, dal, paneer, chapati, fruits and vegetables, etc.
• People who eat both plant and animal products are called non-vegetarians.
Apart from eating chapati, rice and dal they also eat fish, eggs and meat.
Importance of cooking
food
Most of the food is cooked before eating except fruits and some vegetables. It
is important to cook the food properly.
Cooked food:
• improves the taste .
• is easy to digest.
• is safer to eat as it destroys germs.
• stays fresh for a longer period of time.
We can cook food in different ways. Some of the methods of cooking are given
below. Write two food items which are cooked by the methods given below.

Food should not be overcooked. Overcooked food destroys the nutrients
present in it.
Fruits and vegetables
The part of the plant which has seeds in it is called a fruit.

Different types of food we eat
Do you like to eat the same kind of food every day? Will it give you energy to
study and play?
We need to include a variety of food items in our daily diet. Our body gets all
the nutrients from the different types of food we eat. They are:
1. Fruits and vegetables: apple, banana, carrot, radish
2. Cereals: wheat, rice, oats etc.
3. Pulses: arhar dal, moong dal, chickpeas, kidney beans etc.
4. Meat: fish, chicken, mutton etc.
5. Milk Products: We get milk from animals like cow, sheep, goat, camel, yak and
buffalo. This milk is used to make cheese, curd, paneer, etc. The food items
made of milk are called dairy products.
6. Nuts: For example: almonds, cashews, pistachios, etc.
7. Oil: The oil that is used in our cooking is produced from the seeds of the
plants. For example: sunflower, mustard, peanut, etc.
A diet which contains all these food items in the right amount is called a
balance diet.
