Importance of Tropical Biome Conservation

The document discusses why conservation efforts are more significant in tropical biomes due to their high biodiversity, vulnerability to threats like deforestation and climate change, provision of important ecosystem services, and cultural importance to native populations who rely on the resources. International collaboration and sustainable management approaches are needed to address the issues and preserve tropical biomes.

Q2.

To what extent is the need for conservation more significant in tropical

biomes? (9 marks)

Ans. The high richness and vulnerability of tropical biomes to different challenges
make conservation efforts especially necessary in these areas. These biomes like
the Amazon Rainforest, which is home to millions of species are hotspots for
biodiversity. For example, the Amazon Rainforest sometimes referred to as the
"lungs of the Earth," is globally significant due to its unmatched diversity of flora
and animals. However, habitat fragmentation, deforestation, and climate change
seriously threaten this biodiversity. Agriculture, logging, and infrastructure
development are the main causes of deforestation in the Amazon, which not only
leads to species extinction but also increases carbon emissions that worsen
climate change.

In addition, tropical biomes offer priceless ecological services like water

purification, climate regulation, and carbon isolation. Tropical marine biomes are
home to coral reefs, which serve as an example of this by sustaining fisheries,
preventing coastline erosion, and generating substantial amounts of income from
tourists. But as a result of things like coral bleaching and ocean acidification, these
ecosystems are becoming more and more vulnerable, which emphasizes how
urgently conservation efforts are needed to save these essential services.

Furthermore, a large number of native tribes live in tropical biomes and depend
on the resources there for both their traditional ways of life and subsistence.
These communities emphasize the value of conservation for both biodiversity and
cultural heritage preservation since they have invaluable traditional knowledge of
the ecosystem. Therefore, to guarantee the long-term preservation of these
ecosystems and the welfare of their inhabitants, conservation initiatives must
incorporate perspectives and initiate sustainable management approaches.
To sum up, because of their remarkable biodiversity, susceptibility to hazards,
ability to provide ecosystem services, and importance to native populations,
tropical biomes require conservation efforts. International collaboration and
sustainable management techniques are needed to address these issues and
preserve these important ecosystems for future generations.
