CHAPTER 1: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The community service report shall have only a one-page executive summary. It shall include a brief
description of the Community and summary of all the activities done by the student in CSP and five or
more learning objectives and outcomes.

India is ranked under the world's five largest producers of over 80% of agricultural produce items,
including many cash crops such as coffee and cotton, in 2010. India is one of the world's five largest
producers of livestock and poultry meat, with one of the fastest growth rates, as of 2011.

India's population is growing faster than its ability to produce rice and wheat. While other
recent studies claim that India can easily feed its growing population, plus produce wheat and rice for
global exports, if it can reduce food staple spoilage/wastage, improve its infrastructure and raise its farm
productivity like those achieved by other developing countries such as Brazil and China.

Organic farming in India is an agricultural method that intends to grow crops to maintain the soil alive.
This farming method increases the fertility of the soil without creating any infliction like conventional
farming techniques.

Nowadays, Organic farming is falling behind especially in Andhra Pradesh. So, we have
chosen organic farming awareness as our community service project.

We have visited Rameswaram village which is located at Pedapudi Mandal, Kakinada

533006. We have conducted an agriculture survey regarding organic farming in Rameswaram village. We
interacted with the local farmers to bring awareness about organic farming.

Here are the core objectives:

• The consistent and adequate production of healthy and nutritious food
• To develop crops in a manner that maintains their growth without interfering with their inherent
behaviour and conditions.
• To lessen pollution, soil erosion, and soil degradation
• To provide optimal long-term fertilization through natural pesticides for the biological actions of crops
• To preserve genetic and biological diversity between plants and animals
• To improve the management of recycling materials and rely on renewable sources in industries
• To make organic products to defend crops from insects and plants
CHAPTER 2: Overview of the Community

About the Community/Village/Habitation including historical profile of the community/ habitation,

community diversity, traditions, ethics and values.
Brief note on Socio-Economic conditions of the Community/Habitation.

The selected locality/village is Rameswaram. Rameswaram is previously called as Nakala Rameswaram.

Rameswaram is located in Pedapudi Mandal, Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh- 533006 at Latitude 16.9708N and
Longitude 82.1918E

The nearest National airport to Rameswaram is at Rajahmundry 31.84KM far and the nearest Railway station is
Kakinada Town 4.58KM far. The Nearby villages of Rameswaram are Kovvada, Chidiga, Ganganapalli, Karapa,
and Karakuduru. The Nearby post Office is Atchutapuram P.O.

As per available data from the year 2011, 6090 persons live in 17households in the village Rameswaram. There
are 3010 female individuals and 3080 male individuals in the village. Females constitute 49.43% and males
constitute 50.57% of the total population. There are 618 scheduled castes persons of which 319 are females and
299 are males. Females constitute 51.62% and males constitute 48.38% of the scheduled castes population.
Scheduled castes constitute 10.15% of the total population. Population density of Rameswaram is 1168.91
persons per square kilo meter.

In the Indian context, there is a rich heritage of religious influences on ethics and moral values. The ancient texts
have emphasized the importance of ethics and moral values in governance Here goddess Maa Lachha Amma is
located.

The popular festivals in Rameswaram village are VENKANNA BABU JATARA which is celebrated every year
in the month of March for a week and MAA LACHHA AMMA JATARA which is celebrated every year in the
month of (April-May). The people here were very cordial and cheerful, they helped us to carry out our project
successfully.
CHAPTER 3: COMMUNITY SERVICE PART

Description of the Activities undertaken in the Community during the Community Service Project. This part could
end by reflecting on what kind of values, life skills, and technical skills the student acquired.

As a part of our community service project, we conducted different activities in the selected
community. We conducted a survey on the agricultural practices in the village. During this process we got to
know many new things such as the type of crops grown in the locality, difficulties faced during the process,
minimum investment required, profits gained and many more...

Understanding the problems of farming and its decreasing percentage as an occupation during the survey
we felt a necessity to explain people about the importance of farmers and advanced methods that could enhance
the yield. Thus, we visited the high school in the village and interacted with the students there. We gave a detailed
presentation about agriculture once being the backbone of our country’s economy and its contribution to human
society, various methods of farming like organic, inorganic, aqua etc... Also, we explained how we can use the
latest technologies to enhance the farming methods.

With the zeal to help the students of the community to achieve better personal and professional growth
we gave a presentation on career guidance and awareness on public exams. We spent an entire week to interact
with students of different classes, and did our best to address their doubts and encourage them to work for the
development of their society which in turn develops the living standards of not only their place but also the
country. We explained what role a student plays in society and how we can be the change. We even conducted
few activities to make them understand the importance of improving one’s soft skills and advised them on the
steps we need to follow to develop soft skills. We also addressed how critical thinking, problem solving, writing
skills, reading skills, active listening and communication skills are necessary to sustain the present competitive
world and reach our determined career.

During this process, even we got to learn many things. We were able to understand our society a little
more, interacting with people helped us to overcome our fear of expressing our views. To talk to a bunch of
people and make them understand our point of view requires a lot of courage, patience, and a lot more of
ground work. By the end of our project, we were able to improve our listening, speaking skills. We also got aa
real time experience to face certain problems which would definitely help us in our work place.

Describe the problems you have identified in the community
Unavailability of good Quality of Seeds:
Seeds are the basic input or raw material for the farmers to grow crops. But there is a lack of availability
of the good quality of seeds in the market. And if the good quality seeds are available, they are so expensive that
the poor and marginal farmers are not able to afford.

Lack of Modern Equipment:

Even in 2020, the majority of Indian farmers use traditional tools for agriculture such as plough, sickle,
etc. This leads to the wastage of energy and manpower and less yield per capita labour force.

Poor Irrigation facilities:

Irrigation is one of the essential steps for a crop to grow perfectly. But do you know that only one-third
area of the total land in India has proper irrigation facility available? The reason for good irrigation facilities is
the availability of water throughout the year from the rivers and dam. This helps the farmers to conduct
agricultural operations timely.

Small and Fragmented Holdings of land:

This is one of the major reasons why Indian farmers are not competent. Because, most of the poor farmers
have a very small amount of land and that too in a fragmented manner. The main reason for this kind of system
is the inheritance law of India. And due to this, most of the farmers in India have fragmented lands.

Dealing with local traders and middleman:

It is a problem a farmer faces at the end of all agricultural activity. This is why we have also mentioned it in
the end. But don’t judge the importance of this problem by its position. In this situation, they have to look for a
middleman and local traders for business. These middlemen don’t provide a reasonable price for their crops, and
hence farmers are bound to either sell crops at a lower price or just throw at the roads.

Lack of Storage facilities:

In the absence of market place, the local traders dominate the market and exploitation of farmers takes place.
These middlemen are not only creating a problem for farmers but also for consumers because they ultimately sell
the crops at a very high price after purchasing it from farmers.

Decreasing of soil fertility:

Due to excess use of fertilizers and pesticides We, heard that the crop production is decreasing year by year
and the reason for this is the decrease in power of soil. Too much fertilizer can result in stunted growth and
withering or death to the plants commonly known as leaf scorch; decrease the organic matter in the soil leading
to soil acidification. They are telling that different diseases are affecting the crop these days and when they use
pesticides to cure them it effecting the plant growth. Ultimately, the farmer is affecting for this reason. This was
the main problem in our problem analysis. • The synthetic chemicals in the chemical fertilizers adversely affect
the health of naturally found soil micro-organisms by affecting the soil pH. These altered levels of acidity in the
soil eliminate the micro-organisms beneficial to plant and soil health as they help to increase the plants' natural
defences against pests and diseases.
• As a result of chemical fertilizer use the health of soil and water is jeopardized, not to mention the waste of
money and nutrient deficient plants. The presence of a number of acids in the soil, such as hydrochloric and
sulfuric acids, creates a damaging effect on soil referred to as soil friability.
No Awareness on Soil Testing:
We noticed that all the farmers are in a mindset that the land is suitable to only some particular crop. They
are not interested to cultivate new crops which are suitable to that particular soil. They are not aware of the soil
testing techniques which provide them the properties of the soil, which crop has to be grown and what fertilizers
are used to that crop. We discussed with the government officials of that particular village about the soil testing
techniques that government providing to the farmers. They need awareness about that particular soil testing
scheme providing by government which is of free of cost. It can bring changes in the farming methods and
mindset of farmer to which crop has to cultivate in their land.
low yield Constraints of Organic Farming:
▪ Lack of awareness
▪ Lack of good marketing policies
▪ Shortage of biomass
▪ Inadequate farming infrastructure
▪ High input cost of farming
▪ Inappropriate market of Organic input
▪ Inefficient agricultural policies
▪ Lack of financial support
▪ Inability to meet the export demand
▪ Lack of quality standards for manure
▪ Low yield

No Reasonable price and Cost of Labour:

In most of the farmers we are hearing that they are not getting reasonable price for their crop production.
When we see these days the prices of everything are increased but the price of food grains is not increasing. They
are not getting any good profit even the crop was good. In case of floods and cyclones they are going in to the
debts. Because of this issue many farmers are not willing to do the farming they are seeing alternate ways to live.
Some of them are working as night watchmen by quitting the farming. This situation has to be changed by
providing them a reasonable price. Another major problem we heard is the availability of labour and cost of the
labour. As, we discussed above people are not willing to come in the farms especially the new generations there
by the availability of the workers decreasing.

No proper awareness on the government schemes:

No proper awareness on the government schemes provided by the government We heard that many of the
farmers are not getting funds, crop damages and other subsidies from the government due to lack of awareness.
There not aware of the schemes provided by the government because of their illiteracy
Some of the government schemes are:
Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY)
Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)
Gramin BhandaranYojna Micro Irrigation Fund (MIF)
Short-term and long-term action plan for possible solutions for the problemsidentified
and that could be recommended to the concerned authorities for implementation.

Short-term action plans:

1.Educate the farmers about organic farming and new methods of cultivation.
2.Ask the farmers to make a habit of watching agriculture programme on tv.
3.We will try to take soil test on the agricultural lands.
4.Educate them how to use online website for the latest information regarding cultivating crops and
weather.

Long -term action plans:

1.We will continue to educate farmers about organic farming and new methods of cultivation.
2.We will make sure that every farmer is watching agriculture programmes on tv.
3.Based on soil test report we will share the information about the crops that can be cultivated on that
field and about the crops that would gain them more profit.
4.We will continue to educate them how to use online website for the latest information regarding
cultivating crops and weather.

Short-term and long-term action plan that could be recommended to be concerned

authorities for implementation.

1.Create awareness about the latest crop cultivation methods.

2.Make sure that every farmer gets the benefits from the government that a farmer could get.
3.The government should help farmers by providing necessary support to practice new methods of
cultivations and the tools required for it.
4.Provision of straightforward farming loans from the banks at a low rate of interest.
5.Insurance of their cultivation.
Description of the Community awareness Programme /s conducted w.r.t theproblems
and their outcomes.

We conducted a survey on the agricultural practices in the village. During this process we got to
know many new things such as the type of crops grown in the locality, difficulties faced during the
process, minimum investment required, profits gained and many more...

As a result of the survey conducted, we identified many problems and difficulties faced by the
farmers some of them are:
Unavailability of good Quality of Seeds:
Lack of Modern Equipment:
Poor Irrigation facilities:
Small and Fragmented Holdings of land:
Dealing with local traders and middleman:
Lack of Storage facilities:
To eradicate these problems to some extent we interacted with the farmers and tried to make
them understand online trading so that they could buy a good quality of seeds from various options that
are available in online markets in which they could get a chance to explore more when compared to
physical shopping, we explained about the new methodologies and also about the latest machinery
which can make their work a little easier.

We visited the high school in the village and interacted with the students there. We gave a
detailed presentation about agriculture once being the backbone of our country’s economy and its
contribution to human society, various methods of farming like organic, inorganic, aqua etc... Also, we
explained how we can use the latest technologies to enhance the farming methods. We also conducted
plantation drive around the schools and also at some places in the community.
Both the farmers and the students took an active part in the interaction. They were very
attentive and curious to know about the various aspects of farming and technology.
Report of the mini-project work done in the related subject w.r.t the
habitation/village.
A mini-project work in the related subject w.r.t the habitation/village. (For ex., a student
of Botany may do a project on Organic Farming or Horticulture or usage of biofertilizers
or biopesticides or effect of the inorganic pesticides, etc. A student of Zoology may do a
project on Aquaculture practices or animal husbandry or poultry or health and hygiene
or Blood group analysis or survey on the Hypertension or survey on the prevalence of
diabetes, etc.

The Report shall be limited to 8-10 pages.

As the survey came to an end, we found that agriculture which is once the backbone of
our country and its economy is slowly losing its charm due to various reasons and we as the future
generations have the responsibility to secure our roots. Also, without cultivation how can we fulfil our
appetite? After thoroughly analysing the survey, some of the main problems of the farmers we found
are:
Farmers are not aware of organic farming benefits.
They are also not aware of government schemes.
They are facing problems in soil testing implementations.
Unavailability of good Quality of Seeds
Lack of Modern Equipment
Poor Irrigation facilities
Small and Fragmented Holdings of land
Dealing with local traders and middleman
Lack of Storage facilities etc.

As we are pursuing a technical degree the solution our minds suggested is to create a farmer
friendly web application that provides all necessary information to the farmers and which is easy to
accesses and understood. So, with this ideology we decided to develop a web application as our mini
project.
Some of the areas that our web application covers are:
▪ Latest methodologies in farming.
▪ Problems facing by the farmers these days.
▪ methods of improving farming productivity.
▪ links to other related websites.
▪ Latest information about government polices to farmers
▪ Weather updates
▪ Details of merchants near by
▪ Language translator will also be able so that farmers can accesses the data and understand it
in their comfortable languages.
▪ Present marketing of different crops i.e., government cost and private ways to export their
yield and many more.
