1. The module aims to provide students with a solid foundation in the fundamental
principles and concepts of power electronics. This includes understanding the
operating principles of power semiconductor devices, basic converter topologies, and
control techniques.
2. Analyze Power Electronic Circuits and Systems: Students are expected to develop
analytical skills to analyze and evaluate the performance of power electronic circuits
and systems. This includes analyzing the behavior of power semiconductor devices,
calculating losses, and evaluating efficiency.
3. Design Power Electronic Converters: The module aims to equip students with the
knowledge and skills to design and optimize power electronic converters for specific
applications. This involves selecting appropriate devices, designing control strategies,
and considering practical aspects such as thermal management and electromagnetic
compatibility.

Principle power semiconductor devices: power diodes, power transistor, thyristor

Uncontrolled AC-DC Rectifiers: 4 Hrs.
half-wave with R, RL and RLE loads, full-wave for high inductive loads, 3-phase half-
wave and bridge, effects of freewheeling diodes, Fourier series analysis and THD.
Controlled AC-DC Rectifiers: 6 Hrs.
Half-wave with R, RL and RLE loads, full-wave for high inductive loads, 3-phase half-
wave and bridge.
DC-DC Choppers: 6 Hrs.
Chopper principles and design, buck converters (step-down), boost converters (step-
up), buck- boost converters, pulse width modulation techniques for chopper circuits.
DC-AC Inverters: 4 Hrs.
Analysis of 1-phase bridge and center tapped source inverters, operation of 3-phase
bridge inverter.
AC-AC Regulators: 4 Hrs.
Single-Phase Controller with a Resistive Load, Single-Phase Controller with an RL Load,
Y- Connected Resistive Load, Y-Connected RL Load, Static VAR Control.
Applications of power converters in solar PV systems: 4 Hrs.
Basic of solar PV, characteristics of solar photovoltaic (PV) panel, power
converters for PV system, standalone PV system, grid-connected PV
systems, MPPT algorithms.

2. Power Semiconductor Devices:

- Characteristics and operation of diodes, power MOSFETs, IGBTs, and thyristors.
- Switching characteristics and limitations.
