Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
Technology facilities access to curriculum but it’s not the curriculum itself.
Teachers guide their students in using technology as a tool for accessing and
understanding educational content according to Christensen 2019.

Numerous the results of studies demonstrate the advantages of technology

use on they work in the educational sector technology plays a significant part in
creating the level of instruction according to Fatimah and Santiana 2017 as the most
recent in this age of globalization and instructional media technology helps
advantages for the educational field particularly for instruction and learning
procedure that gives student fresh genuine and significant educational opportunities
offer more enjoyable and productive learning environment to motivate pupil's
behaviors and effort enabling them to work cooperatively and with convenience to
the data.

In the context of language acquisition according to Kranti 2017 said that

technology has been employed to support and improve education, teachers can use
a variety of technological tools to enhance them instruction motivate them pupils and
encourage their participation in the classroom give genuine illustration of the target
culture, and establish a connection between them classrooms to improve language
acquisition, some using technology educators can differentiate lesson and make
adjustment and in class activities in supporting and facilitating language acquisition

1
According to Christensen 2019 Technology in education mirror the passed
world we live in. In modern classroom its race to find student all working on the
same exact activity instead, today school are technology rich spaces that promote
diverse activity they’re abuzz with the collaboration, critical thinking, creatively and
communication all thanks to technology.

According to George 2020 in recent years a shift away from the concept of
teaching technology to integrating technology has begun. In essence, what this
distinction boils down to is a move away from treating technology primarily as a skill-
based disciplinary subject that student to seeing it as something that They used to
enhance how they learn something else. With an integrated approach to technology
education we treat technology as a tool what we can apply in all subject and to
various tasks, for the purpose of enhancing the learning process.

According to Simplilearn 2024 Technology has witnessed impressive evolution

in the past few days, which has in turn transformed our lives and helped us evolve
with it. Right from any part of the world, technology has contributed more than
anything to help mankind live a life of luxury and convenience. It is also because of
technology that we know our world and outer space better. Every field owes its
advancement to technology in every aspect of our lives. In the upcoming sections,
we elaborate on the importance, benefits and the impact of technology.

According to Harrell 2018 technology is an integral part of us everyday lives in

fact student in our public school is considered digital natives and have become
accustomed to always being connected to their devices and the internet. Although
classroom may have access to many technology devices, there are several external

2
and external factors that affect the proper implementation of the technology in
classrooms.

Background

According to Randall S Davies, Richard E West (2014) It is commonly believed

that learning is enhanced through the use of technology and that students need to
develop technology skills in order to be productive members of society. For this
reason, providing a high-quality education includes the expectation that teachers
use educational technologies effectively in their classroom and that they teach their
students to use technology. In this chapter we have organized our review of
technology integration research around a framework based on three areas of focus:
(1) increasing access to educational technologies, (2) increasing the use of
technology for instructional purposes, and (3) improving the effectiveness of
technology use to facilitate learning. Within these categories, we describe findings
related to one-to-one computing initiatives, integration of open educational
resources, various methods of teacher professional development, ethical issues
affecting technology use, emerging approaches to technology integration that
emphasize pedagogical perspectives and personalized instruction, technology-
enabled assessment practices, and the need for systemic educational change to
fully realize technology’s potential for improving learning. From our analysis of the
scholarship in this area, we conclude that the primary benefit of current technology
use in education has been to increase information access and communication.
Students primarily use technology to gather, organize, analyze, and report
information, but this has not dramatically improved student performance on
standardized tests. These findings lead to the conclusion that future efforts should
3
focus on providing students and teachers with increased access to technology along
with training in pedagogically sound best practices, including more advanced
approaches for technology-based assessment and adaptive instruction.

According to DK Wentworth, JH Middleton (2014) It is becoming more and

more crucial to address the issue of technology use's impact on academic
achievement as students continue to utilize it both inside and outside of the
classroom. Studies on multitasking and cognitive theory strongly suggest a
detrimental effect; other studies find little to no effect. This study sought to clarify
and reconcile these conflicting findings using a sizable student population. We
investigated the connection between students' technology usage frequency and their
academic achievement as determined by GPA, SAT scores, study hours, and
anticipated grade. We also looked at how gender and work status fit into this
association to further explain our findings. Our theories received some support, with
the frequency of technology use having a detrimental impact.

According to Christensen 2019 learners need digital skills educational

Technology too has taken on a vibrant role in many classrooms. The focus is lesson
drilling concepts into students' minds and more on teaching them important
computer literacy skills.

According to Angelo 2022 information communication and technology (ICT)

literacy has profound implication for social capital whether that be the form of

educational institutions, relationships between people in society, or universal

communication around the rest of the world. In an educational setting technology

Can facilitate more flexible and democratic style of teaching and learning, provide

students with more autonomy and control over their learning and encourage the

development and conative competencies and understanding.

Chapter 2

Review Related Literature

According to Alabama 2018 Technology is an integral part of our everyday

lives. In fact, students in our public schools are considered digital natives and have
become accustomed to always being connected to their devices and the Internet. In
2013, 71 percent of the US population age 3 and older used the Internet (Snyder, de
Brey, & Dillow, 2016). Given the importance technology plays in our lives, schools
now have a responsibility to integrate it into teaching and learning and prepare
students for 21st Century skills and careers (Cakir, 2014; Luterberbach & Brown,
2011). Although classrooms may have access to many technology devices, there
are several external and internal factors that affect the proper implementation of
technology in classrooms. In preparing students to be college and career ready,
technology integration is imperative. This paper will discuss factors such as poor
infrastructure, inadequate technology, lack of sufficient technological tools, effective
professional development

Technology to be used in everyday learning tasks, such as making

presentations and make it easy to study through media. Students are permitted to
use laptops or cellphones. should look for multiple references to help you
understand a specific topic. Furthermore, students claimed that the presence of
integrated technology in Student learning activities make it easier for students to

9
receive materials and endure everyday lecture activities and train students to use
available technologies to assist them. in providing materials and attracting pupils to
stay engaged and participate in learning. when technology tools are available,
professors will naturally integrate them. incorporate into their classroom instruction
to improve student learning. As a result, the difficulty for researchers is to measure
the usage of technology to support student learning. (Oppenheimer, 2018). During
several studies have also studied the aspects that improve the integration of
technology into instruction. As hurdles to effective technological integration, limited
studies on students are available. Perceptions of computer technology use and their
impact on it.

Information and communication technology (ICT) encompasses computers,

the Internet, and Sound equipment, televisions, and projectors are examples of
electronic systems. is commonly used in today's educational settings. School is a
critical place in which Students engage in a variety of computer-based activities,
while the home serves as a supplement because computer activities are more
limited (Kent 2018). ICT is increasingly used successfully in teaching, learning, and
evaluation. Furthermore, learning is a continuous, lifetime process in which students
change their viewpoints by pursuing knowledge, which differs from traditional
techniques. As time passes, it will be required to wait for and be open to new
sources of information (Weert, 2019). For these students, digital competency will
therefore be a crucial prerequisite in the upcoming years. Because learning can
happen at any moment using ICT, it tends to increase access to education. and
wherever. For instance, students can access online course materials around-the-
clock.

The literature of information and communication technologies in education is

vast. However, there is no consensus regarding how the use of information and
communication technologies impacts student performance. It is believed that the
skills developed through the frequent use of ICT have a positive influence on student

10
performance. The improvements confirmed at various student levels include
increased autonomy related to school tasks (Clark & Lee, 2019), higher awareness
of news about their curriculum (Chou & Block, 2018), increased creativity and critical
thinking (Chou & Block, 2018), better insight into their performance and a higher
level of independence and ownership (Clark & Lee, 2019), a more personalized
learning experience (Chou & Block, 2018; Harper & Milman, 2016), the development
of the skills needed to solve real problems (Chou & Block, 2018); easier interaction
with peers and teachers, e.g., to ask questions (Clark & Lee, 2019), and greater
enjoyment and motivation to learn (Clark & Lee, 2019; Harper & Milman, 2016).

According to Caverly & Peterson (2018) Almost every element of our lives—
including our jobs, residences, and even coffee shops—is infused with technology.
Over the past ten years, new technological tools have emerged to provide us with
entertainment (such as the iPod); ways to share information and entertainment, such
as podcasts, through our personal digital assistants or mobile smart phones (such
as the iPhone); blogs, or online discussion forums, to discuss what we and others
have in common; and dynamic webpages to interact with and share in.

According to Hanan Muhammad Asghar and Tabassum Rashid (2016) The

increasing usage of technology by today's students has forced higher education
institutions all over the world to recognize the need of explicitly integrating it into
teaching and learning. But can having access to and using technology improve
students' and academic performance.

The use and impact of ICT on students' academic performance in higher

education is not flawless, with varied findings in the research. Previous researchers
that failed to give a clear harmony on the influence of ICT on student success were
unable to demonstrate a true impact of ICT on students' performance in higher
education. The on the impact of computers and the internet in universities on
students' academic achievement is even more limited. The impact of computer use
11
on student performance is unclear. Similarly, growing use of computers and internet
connections has had no discernible influence on any measure of student
achievement; additionally, Internet use enhances enjoyment. There are no
artistically significant improvements found in students' academic performance.

According to Alemayehu, G., & Natarajan, M. (2018). The straight connection

between ICT use and pupils' academic achievement has been the center of
substantial literature during the previous two decades. Several research have
attempted to explain the role. the increased value of these technologies in schools
and on students' academic performance. The first collection of literature investigated
the influence of computer use. Since the internet. revolution, but there has been a
shift in literature that focuses on the influence of online activities: the use of internet
educational online platforms, digital devices, blogs. wikis, etc. While the majority of
the studies reveal a mixed result, Few argues that there is no evidence of a
significant function for ICT applications in higher education.

Related research focuses on the impact of ICT facilities on Student's academic

performance in both local and global research. ICTs have recently seen a surge of
interest. It is an important research field for many experts worldwide. globe. "Their
nature has significantly altered the face of education throughout the last few

training Become a priority throughout the last decade". "But, very Few have made
progress. Yes, a small percentage of Schools in several countries attained high
levels of effectiveness. Use of ICT to Support and Change Teaching and Learning
procedure in a variety of topic areas. Others are still in the early stages Phase of
Information and Communication Technology Adoption Khan and others. In current

12
times Education, 10 Students are not meant to be bound exclusively to the Learning
in class.

Review Related Study

According to M. Owusu-Acheaw; Larson (2015) The study aimed to evaluate

students' usage of social media and its impact on academic performance at tertiary
institutions in Ghana, with a focus on Koforidua Polytechnic students. A
questionnaire was utilized to collect data. One thousand five hundred and eight
copies of the questionnaire were retrieved, resulting in a 95.5% response rate. The
study found that the majority of respondents owned mobile phones with Internet
access and were aware of the availability of several media outlets.

According to EURASIA (2018) Technology enhancement learning is a process

that leads to deep point of learning and adds knowledge of technologies. Various
studies shed light on technology development and its effect in educational sector.
The aim of this integrative review is to examine the current evidence of the impact of
technology learning on student learning and academic performance in courses
requiring collaborative or activities. Three themes of techniques used for student
learning outcomes, includes technology enhanced learning, assessment method
and faculty experience on academic performance in universities with technology
use. The final results of this paper show the relationship between what has been
done and the factors used by the authors. Also the future work needs more use of
technologies in different phases of learning process.

13
According to Tabassum Rashid, Hanan Muhammad Asghar (2016) The
widespread technology use among current college and university students has
made higher educational institutions worldwide acknowledge the need of
incorporating it in teaching and learning for explicit reasons. But does access and
usage of technology enhance academic performance and foster student
engagement in reality? Researches in the last over two decades have conjectured
both the positive and negative outcomes of the students’ continuous interface with
technology. Student engagement and self-directed learning (SDL) are the two other
themes that have independently attracted considerable interest of researchers,
ascribable to the explicit and implicit assertions that both are related to the academic
success. Additionally, the relationship of technology use with these two academic
behaviors have also been investigated although not very extensively. The current
study aimed to inspect a path model with technology use, student engagement, self-
directed learning and academic performance among undergraduate

Students’ crucial component of the educational system is the academic

achievement of the pupils and eventually the development or enhancement of
students' intellectual achievement. The Technology integration as a teaching
strategy can improve students' academic performance (Kaur et al., 2019; Luo, Yang,
Xue, & Zuo, 2019; Ilhan & Oruç, 2018).

According to (Muradl, Razzaque, et al.,2019) Over the years, technology has

spread around the world and become a regular element of education. over the last
20 years, and Bahrain is no different. In fact, the monarchy has been moving more
and more in the adoption of a technology-driven curriculum. The findings of the
investigation on the study's hypothesis demonstrate that there is a strong correlation
between students' performance and educational technology.

14
There is an agreement that there is a significant increase in technology
investments in the educational sector all over the entire world in the past two
decades. The major assumption upon which the vast majority of these investments
were made was that “technology-mediated learning environments positively
contribute to create endless opportunities for learners to search, analyze, work out
problematic issues, communicate other and work in teams” (Lim, et al., 2020).

A study conducted by Guneş et al. (2020) found that the use of technology,
specifically the Geographic Information System (GIS), improved 5th grade students'
academic performance on exams and tests due to the students enjoying the
technology activities that were incorporated into the learning. A study conducted by
Didin and Kasapoglu (2021) examined the learning strategies of 7th grade social
studies students, their academic achievement in social studies, and the relationship
between these two variables.

The study found that the technology-based learning strategies utilized helped
improve students’ academic performance and supported students in having high
self-expectations, staying on task, setting achievement goals, being more motivated,
and having improved time management skills (Didin & Kasapoglu, 2021). The
literature supports how the integration of technology in the instruction can improve
student academic performance.

According to Nepo (2018) Teachers are always looking for methods to raise
their students' academic achievement. As the world grows more digital, technology
is being incorporated into increasing number of academic curricula. In addition
15
Çener et al. (2019)'s investigation, the scholars examined the impact of technology
on sixth grade social studies pupils' academic performance.

According to Chowdhry (2014) Education fosters personal growth. Leena

Khanna, Shailendra Narayan Singh, and Mansaf Alam (2016) conducted a
systematic review of educational data mining and its role in identifying factors
affecting students' academic performance at the 1st India International Conference
on Information Processing (IICIP), held from January 1–7, 2016. It improves
people's ability to solve problems and make decisions in addition to helping them
develop their social skills. The number of schools, colleges, and universities
worldwide is increasing, and this has given rise to new dimensions in education.
Enhancing the general efficacy and quality of education is the primary goal of higher
education institutions. Today's education needs to be able to predict student
achievement as well as the future in this big data era.
