1. Background
The background to the research conducted by Dinda Bestari and Eka Kurniasari
discusses the tradition of bridal bath prohibition among the Lampung tribe in
Indonesia, specifically in the village of Karta Raharja, Tulang Bawang Barat
Regency. The study explores this local tradition from a cultural and Islamic law
perspective, highlighting its significance, practices, and implications within the
community. The tradition of bridal bath prohibition is deeply rooted in the Lampung
tribe's customs and has been passed down through generations. It involves a ritual
where the prospective bride is prohibited from bathing three days before the wedding
reception. The belief associated with this tradition includes the idea that it will not
rain during the wedding reception, which is seen as a sign of blessing and protection.
The study delves into the concept of 'urf, which is the customary practices and
traditions of a community, and how it influences the interpretation of Islamic law. It
discusses how the tradition of bridal bath prohibition aligns with the principles of 'urf
and is considered permissible (mubah) within the context of Islamic law. The study
also addresses the importance of preserving local customs and traditions while
ensuring they do not contradict Islamic teachings. Overall, the research provides
valuable insights into the cultural practices of the Lampung tribe, the intersection of
local traditions with Islamic law, and the significance of upholding community
customs within the framework of religious principles.
2. Method
In this research the used was a empirical methods. This research involves collecting
primary data through interviews, observation and documentation to determine the
implementation and meaning of traditions in Karta Raharja Village, West Tulang
Bawang Regency. The research process followed a structured approach, starting with
determining the topic and research objectives. Data collection methods include
interviews with community members, observation of the practice of banning bridal
showers, and documenting relevant information. and community preferences in zakat
distribution through traditional institutions.
3. Theory
The theory of 'urf in the context of Islamic law. 'Urf refers to the customary practices
and traditions within a community that are taken into consideration when interpreting
and applying the principles of Islamic law. In the study, researchers explored how the
tradition of prohibiting bridal showers is in line with 'urf theory and its acceptance in
Islamic law. They argue that the practice of prohibiting the bride and groom from
bathing before the wedding reception is permissible (mubah) according to Islamic
law. This is supported by the fact that this tradition does not violate the basic
conditions or pillars of marriage, and is not associated with any form of shirk
(associating partners with Allah). Furthermore, this research highlights that the belief
in the effectiveness of traditions, such as ensuring good weather during a wedding
reception, is due to the will of Allah SWT. Although some members of the
community may view this tradition as a means of receiving blessings from their
ancestors, this study warns against attributing such results to anything other than
Allah's will to avoid committing shirk. By examining the tradition of prohibiting
bridal showers through the lens of 'urf and Islamic law, this research provides insight
into how local customs and practices can coexist with religious principles. This
underscores the importance of understanding and respecting cultural traditions while
ensuring that they do not conflict with core Islamic principles.
