VOCABULARY – ACTIVITIES

Joe is developing his new project now.

The boys are playing soccer tomorrow morning.

Susan’s riding her new bike next weekend.

They are running with their adversaries at the moment.

Mel is visiting her grandmother tonight.

Mike is fixing a pump today.

The couple is talking over their relationship

The friends are rollerblading in the afternoon


INVITING A CRUSH

Jack: Hello, Jack speaking.

Megan: Hello jack, it’s me Megan. How are you?

Jack: I’m good! How are you and your brother?

Megan: I’m very good. He is getting better, he is taking medicines.

Megan: What are you doing? Are you busy now?

Jack: No, I’m not. I’m just relaxing and playing some games.

Megan: Very nice. Look! What are you doing tonight?

Jack: I don’t have plans, but I think I’m eating something different tonight.

Megan: I want to eat something different too. Let’s go to that new restaurant?

Jack: Tonight! I am going with you. I’m taking you in your house at 8 p.m. ok?

Megan: I’m waiting for you, Jack.

At the restaurant.

Jack: What are you eating tonight?

Megan: I’m eating fish tonight, I love fish.

Jack: I love fish too, but tonight I’m trying this new T-bone.

Megan: It’s a good idea, Jack.

Jack: Megan, I’m traveling this weekend to the beach with some friends, let’s go? We’re visiting many
beaches and probably we are going to a big party on Sunday night.

Megan: Sure, I’m travelling with you. I’m already anxious.

Jack: We are having much fun next weekend, my friends are all nice people.

PRESENT CONTINUOUS (ING)

AM / IS / ARE + verb + ING


We use this verbal tense to express actions in progress. Basically there are three ideas.

1 - Actions that are in progress, at the moment someone is saying the sentence.

Jack is talking to Megan now.

Megan is eating fish at the moment.

Bob is watching TV at present.

What are you doing now?

2- Future plans / arrangements (actions planned for a near future).

Jack is eating out tonight.

Megan is going to the beach this weekend.

Bob is travelling next month.

3- Current activities – Longer actions that are in progress and will finish some point in future.
Expressions: This month, this year, this afternoon. “I am taking English classes this year”.

ARE

Normally we use ING in the final of the verb, but in some cases, we have to pay attention.

A- Final E
I am working now
Come – coming

Live – living

Dance – dancing
I working now
Be – being (exception)

See – seeing (exception)

B – Final IE, we use YING I am work now

Lie – lying

Die – dying

C – Consonant + vowel + consonant (CVC)

Get – Getting

Run – Running

Cut – Cutting

D – More than one syllable with CVC in the final, we double the last letter if it is stressed.

preFER, perMIT, beGIN, - preferring, permitting, beginning

E – If the final is not stresses, we don’t double.

VIsit, HAPpen, deVElop, - visiting, happening, developing.


F – W, X and Y in the final, we don’t double.

Play – playing

Snow – snowing

Fix – fixing

We never use ING with some verbs, abstract verbs and stative verbs.

Abstract: to want, to cost, to exist, to need, to contain.

Stative: to like, to love, to fear, to hate.

Have – We use HAVE in the ING form only if it is expressing an action: E.G:

He is having lunch. She is having a car.

They are having a discussion. I am having two jobs.

Note: If the verb TO HAVE is indicating possession, we do not use ING.

We used these words to indicate the owner (proprietor) of something.

EXERCISES
1 - Answer the questions completely. (use your imagination)

a- Is your father reading a book tonight?

b- Are your friends going out tomorrow?

c- Is your best friend cooking now?

d- Where is your wife going now?

e- When are you working again?

f- Are you having a picnic this weekend?

2 - Write the other forms: (negative / affirmative / interrogative)

She is playing basketball this week.

Are you fixing your new car tomorrow?

They aren’t acting as good actors.


3 - Write complete sentences using “present continuous” according to the pics and the
words.

6 - Long and Short Forms- Rewrite the sentences using the short forms (where long forms
are given) or the long forms (where short forms are given).

b) He is opening the window.
c) I am playing computer games.
d) She's dancing at the party.
e) They're drinking a cup of tea.
7 - Choose the correct form. Note that there are exceptions in spelling when adding 'ing.'

a) His brother is writeing / is writing / are writing a test at the moment.


b) They are swimming / is swimming / are aswimming in the pool.
c) Look! David and Max are comeing / is coming / are coming home.
d) My dog Charlie is runing / is running / are runing to the park.
e) I making / am making / am makeing breakfast now.

8 - Replace the personal pronouns by possessive adjectives:

a- Where is (I) my book?


b- Here is (we) teacher.
c- She goes to school with (she) brother.
d- (They) father works in a car factory.
e- (You) laptop is very expensive.
f- (He) favorite hobby is tennis.
g- (I) husband and I want to go to Paris.
h- We want to see (it) historical monuments.
i- Leila likes (she) dog !
j- (It) name is Bobby.
k- Two students didn't do mathematics homework.
l- I have a car. color is black.
m- We have a dog. name is Pancho.
n- Nancy is from England. husband is from Australia.
o- Ann and Nadia go to a high school. little brother goes to primary
school.
p- Alan has a van. van is very old.
q- We go to a high school. high school is fantastic.
r- I like singing. mother sings with me.
s- François and Alain are French. family are from France.
t- Mary likes grandmother. She often visits her.
