The question about whether the sense of competition in children should be encouraged
has always been the controversial issue. While the first side fostering the youth ‘s
competitive spirit, the other side believes that cooperative sense would better benefit
children growth. In my opinion, both competition and collaboration are crucial for every
child.
To start with, the competitive attitude toward their peers would promote the youngster to
development their abilities by advancing their skills and knowledge in order to compete
with each other. Many research showed that children have better performance when they
have rivals than when they do not. This is due to the sense of competition created once
they interact with each other. For example, children tend to work harder for better results
to win their classmates in the exams. However, the competitive spirit also has detrimental
effect on the pupil and create unhealthy growth in which the children suffer from over
pressure resulted in worse performance.
On the other hand, sense of cooperation is also a fundamental social skill that issues
helpful for children. It help them to receive help and support from others by which they
overcome individual limitations. Teamwork is proven to be more effective than
individual work. For instance, a child might suffer from difficulties at school when
his/her parent are not there to help. Consequently, their peers or teachers would give
his/her support once he/her try to be collaborative.
In conclusion, competition and collaboration are both important and necessary to achieve
overall development. Children learning to be competitive and cooperative would become
useful adults as long as they do it in a proper way.
