Laser B1+ Unit 13 Test

Name: …………………………………………………………………….

Section 1
Reading

1 Read the article about an artist. For questions 1–5, choose the answer (A,
B, C or D) which fits best according to the text.

Michelangelo Buonarotti
Along with Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo is considered to be one of the greatest
artists of all time. These two Italians knew each other, but they did not get on well.
Perhaps the older Leonardo envied the fame and skill of his younger rival. Actually,
Michelangelo was famous for being a difficult character to get along with, losing his
temper easily and with rude manners. He should have learnt to be more polite from
an early age because, as a boy he had his nose broken by a painter, Pietro
Torrigiano, who hit him after Michelangelo kept teasing him while he was trying to
study art.

Michelangelo studied in Florence and later in Rome and it is there that he sculpted
the beautiful, peaceful Pieta in marble, completed in 1500 when he was 25 years old.
It is a masterpiece. Yet even here we have an example of Michelangelo’s temper.
When it was placed in Saint Peter’s Basilica, he overheard someone remark that it
was done by another artist called Solafi. He was so angry that, the same night, he
went into St. Peter’s and carved on it: ‘Michelangelo Buonarotti, Florentine, made
this.’ It was the only work he ever signed.

An even more famous sculpture is his massive David, also in marble. Standing at
over four metres tall, this statue took him three years to make and it was so large that
to get it to its position in the central square of Florence, in Michelangelo’s own words:
‘Archways were torn down, narrow streets widened.’ It took forty men five days to
move it. Once in place, all Florence was astounded. As a local hero, he was a
warning that whoever ruled Florence should rule fairly and defend it bravely. Of
course, being Michelangelo, he had to have many arguments to get it put where he
wanted it. He got his way.

Back in Rome, he was commissioned to paint the ceiling of the famous Sistine
chapel. He had already painted over 300 figures with the help of assistants and then
he decided to fire everyone, remove what had been done and do it all again on his
own. When it was completed, he was 37 years old. He wrote about this experience
saying that after four hard years, creating more than 400 over life-sized figures,
friends did not recognize the old man he had become.

In sculpture and painting, Michelangelo had proved himself as a great artist. Could
there be anything else? If you go to Rome today, you will not only be able to see his
Pieta, but also the magnificent dome of Saint Peter’s rising above the city, designed
