WHAT IS DIGESTIVE SYSTEM?

The digestive system is made up

of the digestive tract and other
organs that help the body break
THE down and absorb food. It is a
long, twisting tube that starts at

esophagus, stomach, small
SYSTEM intestine, large intestine and
anus.

the bloodstream so the body can
use them for energy, growth and
repair. Unused materials are
discarded as feces.
Mouth
When someone eats,
the teeth chew food
into very small pieces.
Glands in the cheeks
and under the tongue
produce saliva that
coats the food, making
it easier to be chewed
and swallowed.
ESOPHAGUS
The esophagus is the
muscular tube that
carries food and liquids
from your mouth to the
stomach. You may not
be aware of your
esophagus until you
swallow something too
large, too hot, or too
cold.
STOMACH
The stomach is an
important organ and the
most dilated portion of
the digestive system. The
esophagus precedes it,
and the small intestine
follows. It is a large,
muscular, and hollow
organ allowing for a
capacity to hold food.
SMALL INTESTINE
The small intestine has
three parts: the
duodenum, jejunum, and
ileum. It helps to further
digest food coming from
the stomach. It absorbs
nutrients (vitamins,
minerals, carbohydrates,
fats, proteins) and water
from food so they can be
used by the body.

The digestive system starts
working as soon as the food
touches the lips and is ingested.
The various organs work together
to run this machinery. The nerves
and hormones control the actions
of the internal organs. There are
mechanical and chemical
processes that work
simultaneously to digest the food
and provide energy to the body.
All the steps in this process are
necessary and important for this
machine to run in a healthy
manner.
