still mentally present?
Yes, that’s great, kindly arrange your chairs and (Students will arrange
fix yourself. their chairs and fix their
selves)
Let’s start our day with positivity, respect and “Yes, ma’am”
practice discipline, can we do that?

Now, I would like to introduce myself since this

is our first meeting, Hi, my name is Ann Fatima
Cancio, you can call me Miss Ann or Ma’am
Ann. I am a student teacher from Visayas State “Hi, Ma’am Ann!”
University, taking up Bachelor of Culture and
Arts Education. Again nice to finally meet you
students!

a painting by Filipino
painter Juan Luna, which

Who are known for their contemporary artwork.

(students are observing

the paintings)
(The teacher ask the students random (The students answers
questions related to the painting) the questions from the
teacher)

b. Analysis
What have you observed after doing the “We evaluated the
activity? different paintings”

Yes, after you evaluated the painting does it “Yes, ma’am”

change your perception about the painting?
How? “We thought that the
paintings contain
messages, not just for
decoration”

c. Abstraction

Evaluating a painting is not easy my dear

students.

Have you experience formally evaluating an art? (the student answer)

How about evaluating a dance performance? (the student answer)

Just how you evaluate a dance performance,

where you analyze and critique their
choreography, formation, music and forms. It is
the same process with evaluating an art or
painting.

An example of this is when you see a painting

when it is aesthetically inclined and realistic
you appreciate and adore it. However, if you see
painting that are not catchy to your eyes you
disregard it and comment something why you
dislike it. That is an act of evaluating, thus far,
art evaluation has in-depth meaning than a
simply comment.

Do you get me? The point is, evaluating an art is “Yes, ma’am”
not just how you see an artwork and you like it
or not. Evaluating an artwork is not just simply
describing it but it’s about how you describe, (Students are listening)
analyze, interpret and judge the artist’s piece of
art and how he/she creates it while expressing
the message of the artwork.

Subjective Opinion
Objective Opinion
(the teacher discuss the two type of opinion
briefly)

To enlighten you more let’s proceed to,

The Steps to Critiquing Art

We have four steps to critiquing artwork we (Students are listening)
have description, analysis, interpretation and
judgement.

1. Description- Think of facts.

When we look at a work of art, our minds
naturally take notice of the general information
that’s present. We start with just a simple
statement of observation. We should try to keep
ourselves from judging the quality of the work
until we have gone through all of the steps.
a. What’s the title of the artwork?
b. Who is the artist?
c. When and where it was created?
d. What media was used?
e. Is there primary subject on the piece? (Students are listening)
f. What specific elements of art can you find
within the piece?

2. Analysis- Be 100% objective.

Analysis refers to how the elements and
principles of art are used in the work. In this
step, our minds take in the lines, values, and
colors of the artwork. We also may take notice
of the balance, proportion, rhythm, and unity
found within the work.
a. How do elements of art interact with each
other?
b. What specific elements stand out?
c. What principles of design can you find?

3. Interpretation- it is subjective and requires

thought on your part.
Often times, we’ll instinctively skip to this step.
We look for meaning in everything, so this is
perfectly natural. In this step, we explore the
meaning of the art. What is the artist trying to
communicate to us? There are no wrong
responses here. The artist may have a meaning
that they intended in the work, but how we
interpret it is completely up to us.
a. What is the artist trying to communicate?
b. What thoughts or feelings come up when you
see the picture?
c. Express your opinion but always back it up
with EVIDENCE. (Students are listening)

4. Judgement- combination of steps 1, 2, and 3.

The last step in art criticism is judgment. Is this
work of art successful? If we’re teaching
students, it’s important to guide them in this
step. Remind students that the work of art may
not be their favorite, but it may still be
successful. This way, we teach students to
appreciate all forms of art, even if we personally
do not like it.
a. Do you like it? Why or why not?
b. Is the artwork effective?
c. What criteria do you think are important that
helped you in concluding your judgement?

Alright, those are the four steps of critiquing an

artwork.

Understanding the steps to art criticism and

implementing them in a structured way in
critique, will lead to stronger artworks. These
steps help us to appreciate all forms of art,
including the works that we may not appreciate
at first glance. All forms of art have their place (Students are listening)
and all deserve a fair approach of evaluation.

d. Application This time you will try to evaluate the painting. I

am going to randomly pick a student to tell me
about their interpretation of the painting. I have
here some rolled paper where the questions are
written in the paper. Are you ready?

Artist: Ang Kiukok

Title: MAN ON FIRE
Medium: Oil on canvas
Size: 102 cm x 89 cm
Year: 1980

(The teacher will let the students pick the rolled (The students will pick
paper and choose student to read the question the rolled paper and read
written in the paper) the question and answer
them)

Generalization

What have you learned? (The students answer: “It

was challenging”)
Again, what are the steps of critiquing an art? “The artist is very
effective in conveying
the message.”
“We learned how to
evaluate an artwork”
“Description, analysis,
interpretation and
judging”
What do you feel after evaluating an art work? “We feel good, we
appreciated the
paintings”

Evaluation Homework
