transgressing party will kill ' Ammar (' Ammar

the Prophet ordered him to perform Tayammum by

rubbing his face and two palms.

"We were with Ammar bin Yasir when a

roasted sheep was brought and he said: 'Eat.'
Someone among the people said: 'I am fasting.'
So Ammar said: 'Whoever fasts on a day in
which there is doubt, then he has disobeyed Abul-
Qasim (pbuh)."

Narrated `Ikrima:

that Ibn `Abbas told him and `Ali bin `Abdullah

to go to Abu Sa`id and listen to some of his
narrations; So they both went (and saw) Abu Sa`id
and his brother irrigating a garden belonging to
them. When he saw them, he came up to them
and sat down with his legs drawn up and wrapped
in his garment and said, "(During the construction
of the mosque of the Prophet) we carried the
adobe of the mosque, one brick at a time while
` Ammar used to carry two at a time. The Prophet
passed by ` Ammar and removed the dust off his
head and said, "May Allah be merciful to
` Ammar . He will be killed by a rebellious
aggressive group. ` Ammar will invite them to
(obey) Allah and they will invite him to the (Hell)
fire."

The Prophet (saws) granted permission to a

person who was sexually defiled to eat or drink or
sleep after performing ablution. Abu Dawud said:
In the chain of this tradition there is a narrator
between Yahya b. Ya'mur and ' Ammar b. Yasir .
'Ali b. Abi Talib, Ibn 'Umar and 'Abd Allah b.
'Amr said: When a person is sexually defiled
wants to eat, he should perform ablution.

Narrated Ammar ibn Yasir :

They (the Companions of the Prophet) wiped with

pure earth (their hands and face) to offer the dawn
prayer in the company of the Messenger of Allah
(saws). They struck the ground with their palms
and wiped their faces once. Then they repeated
and struck the ground with their palms once again
and wiped their arms completely up to the
shoulders and up to the armpits with the inner side
of their hands.

Ammar said: I used khaluq. The first version is

more perfect; it mentioned "taking a bath". Ibn
Jurayj said: I said to Umar (a transmitter): They
might be wearing ihram (robe of pilgrim)? He
replied: No, they were residents.

Narrated 'Awf bin Malik:

When the spoils (fai') came to the Messenger of

Allah (saws), he divided it that day ; he gave two
portions to a married man and one to a bachelor.
The narrator Ibn al-Musaffa added: We were
summoned, and I would be summoned before
' Ammar . So I was summoned and he gave me
two portions, for I had a family ; then ' Ammar b.
Yasir was summoned after me and given one.

When Talha, AzZubair and `Aisha moved to Basra,

`Ali sent ` Ammar bin Yasir and Hasan bin
`Ali who came to us at Kufa and ascended the
pulpit. Al-Hasan bin `Ali was at the top of the
pulpit and ` Ammar was below Al-Hasan. We all
gathered before him. I heard ` Ammar saying,
"`Aisha has moved to Al-Busra. By Allah! She is
the wife of your Prophet in this world and in the
Hereafter. But Allah has put you to test whether
you obey Him (Allah) or her (`Aisha).

Narrated Alqama:

I went to Sham (and asked. "Who is here?"), The

people said, "Abu Ad-Darda." Abu Darda said, "Is
the person whom Allah has protected against
Satan, (as Allah's Apostle said) amongst you". The
subnarrator, Mughira said that the person who
was given Allah's Refuge through the tongue of
the Prophet was ` Ammar ( bin Yasir ).

"I became Junub while I was on a camel and I

could not find any water, so I rolled in the dust like
an animal. I came to the Messenger of Allah
(PBUH) and told him about that, and he said:
'Tayammum would have been sufficient for you.'"

we wiped our arms up to the shoulders. Abu Bakr
went to 'Aishah and said: 'I did not know that you
are blessed.'"

Narrated ` Ammar bin Yasir (RAA):

The Prophet (saws) sent me on some errands and

I became junub (sexually impure), and could not
find water. I rolled myself in the dirt just as an
animal does. I then came to the Prophet (saws)
and mentioned that to him. He said, "This would
have been enough for you," and he struck the
earth with his hands once, then he wiped the right
hand with the left one, and the outside of the
palms of his hands and his face. [Agreed upon.
The wording is that of Muslim's].

A man came to `Umar bin Al-Khattab and said, "I

became Junub but no water was available."
` Ammar bin Yasir said to `Umar, "Do you
remember that you and I (became Junub while
both of us) were together on a journey and you
didn't pray but I rolled myself on the ground and
prayed? I informed the Prophet about it and he
said, 'It would have been sufficient for you to do
like this.' The Prophet then stroked lightly the earth
with his hands and then blew off the dust and
passed his hands over his face and hands."

Ibn Abza reported on the authority of ' Ammar b.

Yasir in this tradition as saying (from the
Prophet):

' Ammar , it would have been enough for you (to

do) so. He then stuck only one stroke on the
ground with both his hands; he then stuck one
with the other; then wiped his face and both arms
up to half the forearms and did not reach the
elbows. Abu Dawud said: This is also transmitted
by Waki' from al-A'mash from Salamah b. Kuhail
from 'Abd al-Rahman b. Abza. It is also
transmitted through a different chain by Jarir from
al-A'mash from Salamah from Sa'id b. 'Abd al-
Rahman b. Abza from his father.

also to the left when giving the salutation, “Peace
and God’s mercy be upon you,” so that the
whitness of his left cheek could be seen. Abu
Dawud, Tirmidhi and Nasa’i transmitted it, but
Tirmidhi did not mention, “So that the whiteness of
his cheek could be seen.” Ibn Majah transmitted
it from ‘ Ammar b. Yasir .

`Uthman ((‫عنه‬ ‫ ))رضي‬called some of the
Companions of the Messenger of Allah ((‫ﷺ‬ ‫)ﷺ‬,
among whom was ‘ Ammar bin Yasir , and said:

I am going to ask you something and I would like

you to be honest with me. I adjure you by Allah, do
you know that the Messenger of Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬used
to give Quraish precedence over all people and he
gave precedence to Banu Hashim over all of
Quraish? The people fell silent, then `Uthman said:
If I had the keys of Paradise in my hand, I would
have given them to Banu Umayyah [his own clan]
so that they could all, down to the last man, enter
it. Then he sent for Talhah and az-Zubair. And
‘Uthman (‫ عنه‬2‫ )رضي ا‬said: Should I tell you about
him - i.e. Ammar ? I was walking with the
Messenger of Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬, who was holding my
hand, and we were walking in al-Batha`, until he
came to where his [` Ammar `s] father and mother
were being tortured. ‘ Ammar `s father said: O
Messenger of Allah (‫)ﷺ‬, are we going to be like
this forever? The Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said to him: `Be
patient.” Then he said: “O Allah, forgive the family
of Yasir , and You have already done so.”

Narrated Al-Bara bin Azib:

The first people who came to us (in Medina) were

Mus`ab bin `Umar and Ibn Um Maktum who
were teaching Qur'an to the people. Then their
came Bilal. Sa`d and ` Ammar bin Yasir . After
that `Umar bin Al-Khattab came along with
twenty other companions of the Prophet. Later on
the Prophet himself (to Medina) and I had never
seen the people of Medina so joyful as they were
on the arrival of Allah's Apostle, for even the slave
girls were saying, "Allah's Apostle has arrived!"
And before his arrival I had read the Sura starting
with:-- "Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most
High" (87.1) together with other Suras of Al-
Mufassal.

bin Abza from his father, that:

A man came to 'Umar bin khattab and said: "I

became impure following sexual emission and
cannot find any water." 'Umar said to him: "Do not
pray." But ' Ammar bin Yasir said: "Do you
not remember, O Commander of the Believers,
when you and I were on a military expedition and
we became sexually impure and could not find
water? As for you, you did not pray, but I rolled in
the dust and then prayed. When I came to the
Prophet and told him what had happened, he said:
'It would have been enough for you (to do this).'
(Then demonstrating) the Prophet struck the
ground with his hands, then blew on hem, and
wiped his face and palms with them."

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abdur-Rahman bin

Abza from his father that a man came to 'Umar
and said:

"I have become Junub and I do not have any

water." 'Umar said: "Do not pray." But ' Ammar
bin Yasir said: "O Commander of the
Believers! Don't you remember when you and I
were on a campaign and we became Junub and
could not find water? You did not pray, but I rolled
in the dust and prayed. Then we came to the
Prophet (PBUH) and told him about that, and he
said: 'It would have been sufficient for you (to do
this),' then the Prophet (PBUH) struck his hands
on the ground and blew on them, then wiped his
face and hands with them'" - (one of the narrators)
Salamah was uncertain and did not know whether
that was up to the elbows or just hands. And
'Umar said: "We will let you bear the burden of
what you took upon yourself."

It was narrated that 'Abddur-Rahman bin Abza

said:

"We were with 'Umar when a man came to him

and said: 'O Commander of the Believers!
sometimes we stay for a month or two without
finding any water. Umar said: As if I did not find
water, I would not pray until I found water.'
' Ammar bin Yasir said: 'Do you remember, O
Commander of the Believer, when you were in
such and such a place and we were rearing the
camels, and you know that we became Junub?'
He said: 'Yes.' 'As for me I rolled in the dust, then
we came to the Prophet (PBUH) and he laughed
and said: "Clean earth would have been sufficient
for you." And he struck his hands on the earth
then blew on them, then he wiped his face and
part of his forearms. He ('Umar) said: "Fear Allah,
O ' Ammar !'" He said: 'O Commander of the
Believers! If you wish I will not mention it.' He said:
'No, we will let you bear the burden of what you
took upon yourself.'"

Narrated Ammar ibn Yasir :

The Messenger of Allah (saws) encamped at Ulat

al-Jaysh and Aisha was in his company. Her
necklace of onyx of Zifar was broken (and fell
somewhere). The people were detained to make a
search for that necklace until the dawn broke.
There was no water with the people. Therefore
AbuBakr became angry with her and said: You
detained the people and they have no water with
them. Thereupon Allah, the Exalted, sent down
revelation about it to His Apostle (saws) granting
concession to purify themselves with pure earth.
Then the Muslims stood up with the Messenger of
Allah (saws) and struck the ground with their
hands and then they raised their hands, and did
not take any earth (in their hands). Then they
wiped with them their faces and hands up to the
shoulders, and from their palms up to the armpits.
Ibn Yahya added in his version: Ibn Shihab said
in his tradition: The people do not take this
(tradition) into account. Abu Dawud said: Ibn
Ishaq also reported it in a similar way. In this
(version) he said on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas.
He mentioned the words "two strikes" (i.e. striking
the earth twice) as mentioned by Yunus. And
Ma'mar also narrated on the authority of al-Zuhri
"two strikes". And Malik said: From al-Zuhri from
'Ubaid Allah b. 'Abd Allah from his father on the
authority of ' Ammar . Abu Uwais also reported it
in a similar way on the authority of al-Zuhri. But
Ibn 'Uyainah doubted it, he sometimes said: from
his father, and sometimes he said: from Ibn
'Abbas. Ibn 'Uyainah was confused in it and in
his hearing from al-Zuhri. No one has mentioned
"two strikes" in this tradition except those whose
names I have mentioned.

Narrated Ammar ibn Yasir :

I came to my family at night (after a journey) with

my hands chapped and they perfumed me with
saffron. In the morning I went to the Prophet
(saws) and gave him a greeting, but he did not
respond to me nor did he welcome me. He said:
Go away and wash this off yourself. I then went
away and washed it off me. I came to him but
there remained a spot of it on me. I give him a
greeting, but he did not respond to me nor did he
welcome me. He said: Go away and wash it off
yourself. I then went away and washed it off me. I
then came and gave him a greeting. He responded
to me and welcomed me, saying: The angels do
not attend the funeral of an unbeliever bringing
good to it, nor a man who smears himself with
saffron, nor a man who is sexually defiled. He said:
He permitted the man who was sexually defiled to
perform ablution when he slept, ate or drank.

Narrated Ammar b. Yasir :

The Apostle of Allaah ( sal Allaahu alayhi wa

sallam ) said : The rinsing of mouth and snuffing
up water in the nose are acts that bear the
characteristics of fitrah (nature). He then narrated
a similar tradition (as reported by Aishah), but he
did not mention the words "letting the beard
grow". He added the words "circumcision" and
"sprinkling water on the private part of the body".
He did not mention the words "cleansing oneself
after easing". Abu Dawud said : A similar tradition
has been reported on the authority of Ibn
'Abbas. He mentioned only five sunnahs all
relating to the head, one of them being parting of
the hair; it did not include wearing the beard. Abu
Dawud said: The tradition as reported by Hammad
has also been transmitted by Talq b. Habib ,
Mujahid, and Bakr b. 'Abd Allaah b. al-Muzani as
their own statement ( not as a tradition from the
Prophet, sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam ).They did
not mention the words "letting the beard grow".
The version transmitted by Muhammad b. Abd
Allaah b. Abi Maryam, Abu Salamah, and Abu
Hurairah from the Prophet ( sal Allaahu alayhi wa
sallam ) mentions the words "letting the beard
grow". A similar tradition has been reported by
Ibrahim al-Nakha'i. He mentioned the words
"wearing the beard and circumcision."

‘A'isha reported God’s messenger as saying,

“Ten characteristics belong to the religion of
Islam:

clipping the moustache, letting the beard grow,

using the tooth-stick, snuffing up water, cutting the
nails, washing the finger joints, plucking the hair
under the armpits, shaving the pubes, and intiqas,
i.e. cleansing oneself with water.” The narrator
said, “I have forgotten the tenth, but it may have
been rinsing the mouth.” Muslim transmitted it. A
version substitutes circumcision for letting the
beard grow. I have not found this version in the
two Sahihs or in al-Humaidi’s book [Al-jam’ bain
as-sahihain], but the author of the Jami‘ [ Ibn al-
Athir, author of Jami' al-usul] mentioned it. as did
al-Khattabi in Ma'alim as-sunan* from Abu Dawud
by the transmission of ‘ Ammar b. Yasir .

Ma'alim as-sunna, but the title given above is more
likely to be correct, as it is a commentary on Abu

It was narrated from Mus'ab bin Sa'd that his

father said:

"On the day of the Conquest of Makkah, the

Messenger of Allah [SAW] granted amnesty to the
people, except four men and two women. He said:
'Kill them, even if you find them clinging to the
covers of Ka'bah.' (They were) 'Ikrimah bin Abi
Jahl, 'Abdullah bin Khatal, Miqyas bin Subabah
and 'Abdullah bin Sa'd bin Abi As-Sarh.
'Abdullah bin Khatl was caught while he was
clinging to the covers of Ka'bah. Sa'eed bin
Huraith and ' Ammar bin Yasir both rushed
toward him, but Sa'eed, who was the younger of
the two, got there before ' Ammar , and he killed
him. Miqyas bin Subabah was caught by the
people in the marketplace, and they killed him.
'Ikrimah traveled by sea, and he was caught in a
storm. The crew of the ship said: 'Turn sincerely
toward Allah, for your (false) gods cannot help you
at all in this situation.' 'Ikrimah said: 'By Allah, if
nothing came to save me at sea except sincerity
toward Allah then nothing else will save me on
land. O Allah, I promise You that if You save me
from this predicament I will go to Muhammad
[SAW] and put my hand in his, and I am sure that I
will find him generous and forgiving.' So he came,
and accepted Islam. 'Abdullah ( bin Sa'd) bin
Abi Sarh hid in the house of 'Uthman bin 'Affan,
and when the Messenger of Allah [SAW] called
the people to give their Oath of Allegiance, he
brought him, and made him stand before the
Prophet [SAW]. He ('Uthman) said: 'O Messenger
of Allah! Accept the allegiance of 'Abdullah.' He
raised his head and looked at him three times,
refusing his allegiance each time, then he
accepted his allegiance after three times. Then he
turned to his Companions and said: 'Was there
not any sensible man among you who would get
up when he saw me refusing to give him my hand
and kill him?' They said: 'We did not know, O
Messenger of Allah, what was in your heart. Why
did you not gesture to us with your eyes?' He
said: 'It is not befitting for a Prophet that his eyes
be deceitful.'"

Sunan an-Nasa'i 1306

It was narrated that Qais bin 'Ubad said:

" Ammar bin Yasir led the people in prayer

and he made the prayer short. It was as if they
disliked that, so he said: 'Did I not do bowing and
prostration properly?' They said: 'Yes.' He said:
'And I said a supplication that the Prophet (SAW)
used to say:Allahumma bi 'ilmikal-ghaiba wa
qudratika 'alal-khalqi ahini ma 'alimtal-hayata
khairan li, wa tawaffani idha 'alimtal-wafata khairan
li. Allahumma as'aluka khashyataka fil-ghaibi wash-
shahadati wa as'aluka kalimatul-aqua fir-rida'i wal
ghadab, wa as'alukal-qasda fil faqr wal-ghina, wa
as'aluka na'iman la yanfadu wa as'aluka qurrata
ainan la tanqati'u wa as'alukar-rida'i ba'dal-qada'i
wa as'aluka bardal 'aishi ba'dal-mawti, wa
as'aluka ladhatan-nazari ila wajhika wash-shawqa
ila liqa'ika fi fitnatin mudillatin, Allahumma zayyina
dizinatil-imani waj'alna hudatan muhtadin (O Allah,
by Your knowledge of the unseen and Your power
over creation, keep me alive so long as You know
that living is good for me and cause me to die
when You know that death is better for me. O
Allah, cause me to fear You in secret and in public.
I ask You to make me true in speech in times of
pleasure and of anger. I ask You to make me
moderate in times of wealth and poverty. And I ask
You for everlasting delight and joy that will never
cease. I ask You to make me pleased with that
which You have decreed and for an easy life after
death. I ask You for the sweetness of looking upon
Your face and a longing to meet You in a manner
that does not entail a calamity that will bring about
harm or a trial that will cause deviation. O Allah,
beautify us with the adornment of faith and make
us among those who guide and are rightly
guided."

Sunan an-Nasa'i 1305

Ata bn As-Sa'ib narrated that his father said:

" Ammar bin Yasir led us in prayer and he

made it brief. Some of the people said to him: 'You
made the prayer sort (or brief).' He said:
'Nevertheless I still recited supplications that I
heard from the Messenger of Allah (SAW).' When
he got up and left, a man -- he was my father but
he did not name himself -- followed him and asked
him about that supplication, then he came and told
the people: "Allāhumma bi `ilmikal-ghaiba wa
qudratika 'alal-khalqi aḥyinī mā `alimtal-ḥayāta
khairan lī, wa tawaffanī idhā `alimtal-wafāta
khairan lī. Allāhumma wa 'as'aluka khashyataka fil-
ghaibi wash-shahādati wa 'as'aluka kalimatal-
ḥaqqi fir-riḍā'i wal ghaḍab, wa as'alukal-qaṣda fil
faqri wal-ghina, wa 'as'aluka na`īman lā yanfadu
wa 'as'aluka qurrata `ainin lā tanqaṭi`u wa
as'alukar-riḍā'i ba`dal-qaḍā'i wa 'as'aluka bardal
`aishi ba`dal-mawti, wa 'as'aluka ladhdhatan-naẓari

ḍarrā'a muḍirratin wa lā fitnatin muḍillatin,
