THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
In educational settings worldwide, the quest for academic excellence is a pervasive goal,
with educators and stakeholders continually seeking to identify factors that contribute to student
success. This desire for a high level of academic performance among learners puts a lot of
pressure on all stakeholders in education (Wunnia, 2017). Indeed, it seems as though the entire
educational system is centered on students' academic achievement. Consequently, schools invest
a great deal of time and energy in assisting students in achieving better in their academic
pursuits.
The educational system in the Philippines employs these initiatives through a variety of
means. Schools secured skilled educators who design engaging lessons, facilitate meaningful
learning experiences, and employ evidence-based teaching strategies to cater to diverse learning
styles and needs.
Amidst this dynamic landscape, the manner in which students engage with their studies—
the strategies they employ, the routines they establish, and the behaviors they exhibit— becomes
a critical determinant of their academic outcomes. From diligent note-taking and consistent
review to effective time management and self-regulated learning, study practices encompass a
spectrum of actions and behaviors that directly influence students' ability to comprehend, retain,
and apply knowledge.
Central to the discourse on study practices is the concept of habits— ingrained patterns of
behavior that are often subconscious in nature yet wield considerable influence over academic
performance. Habits, whether beneficial or detrimental, shape students' study routines, mindset,
and approach to learning, exerting a profound impact on their ability to succeed academically.
While positive habits, such as regular study sessions and active engagement with course
materials, bolster learning and achievement, negative habits, such as procrastination and
disorganization, can impede progress and undermine academic success.
The pattern of behavior adopted by a student in his study is his study habits, which reveal
his personality. Study habits serve as the vehicle of learning and may be seen as both means and
ends to learning (T Ajai John, 2020). Despite the acknowledged significance of study habits in
academic attainment, there remains a need for comprehensive exploration and understanding of
their multifaceted impact on student performance. By delving into the intricacies of study
practices and habits, this study seeks to elucidate the mechanisms through which these factors
influence academic achievement, offering insights that can inform educational practice,
intervention strategies, and support initiatives aimed at enhancing student learning outcomes.
In light of this, the present research endeavors to unravel the complexities of the
relationship between study practices and academic achievement, with a particular focus on the
role of habits in shaping student performance. Through a systematic examination of relevant
literature, empirical investigation, and analysis, this study aims to contribute to the existing body
of knowledge, advance theoretical understanding, and provide practical implications for
educators, policymakers, and stakeholders invested in fostering student success.
Poor study habits among students have long been a cause for concern in educational
environments worldwide. These behaviors cover a range of ways and behaviors that are harmful to
effective learning and academic achievement. Students who have poor study habits may find it difficult to
absorb information, remember it, and perform well in school. These tendencies could include everything
from poor time management and distractions to procrastination and disarray. It is important for
students, educators, and parents to learn about the root causes and effects of bad study habits. These
behaviors not only have an impact on a person's academic performance, but they also have larger effects
on social advancement, career possibilities, and personal growth.
According to Hills (2000), a very good and conducive learning environment encourages students study
habit and might have positive impact on their academic performances but students reading in an
unfavorable environment might find it difficult to study which may affect their academic achievements.
A multimodal strategy that includes focused interventions, educational assistance, and
cultivating a culture of self-discipline and responsibility is necessary to address bad study habits.
Most students perform below average due to lack of good study habits (Abdullahi, 2013). Study habits
increases the efficiency of the students with respect to his/her academic achievement. Study habits are
termed as the methods of study of students. Study habits are student’s ways of studying whether
systematic, efficient or inefficient (Ayodele & Adebiyi, 2013). For students in formal educational
institutions to attain successful achievement in their academic pursuit, they need to have good study
habits. Each individual needs to understand the pattern of studies to adopt in order to excel in the course
of schooling. Some students usually have problem getting started. They start studying very late. At this
time, the work becomes so cumbersome with so much available materials to read and a lot of assignments
to be done (Akafa, 2011). Students who are well focused in their studies and possessed good mental
ability needed to attain good academic performance but may end up performing below expectation
severally. In such instances, the issue confronting such persons is not low intelligent Quotients (I.Q) but
failure to use the most effective methods of studying (Abdullahi, 2013). Learning is a very important
personal matter and there isn’t one study habit that works for every situation. An individual student has to
take more responsibility to acquire the desired knowledge to develop positive values, critical
thinking, attitudes and skills. Paivio (2000) noted that habits of study, which are formed in school, have
greater significance and students must realize the need to acquire these effective study habit. Effective
study habit will help students to prepare schoolworks in less time to achieve greater degree of mastery of
bthe lesson. According to Pascual (2001) stated that habits of study skills/ habits or study strategies are
approaches applied learning. They are generally critical to success in school, are considered essential
acquiring good grades, and are useful for learning troughout one’s life. Overall study habits are routines
and techniques people use to improve their ability to learn, understand and remember information are
known as study habits. These habits include methods for effective planning, scheduling, focusing and
going over content again.

Theoretical Framework
Robert Bjork and fellow PT Biogger Nate Kornell have explored some of the study habits of student in a
2007 paper in Psychonomic Bulletin and Review. Research on memory provides a number of important
suggestions aboutn the most beffective ways to study. One of the most important tips is that students
should study by testing themselves rather than just reading over the material. It is also important to study
over a period of days rather than just waiting the lest minute to study. Kornell and Bjork’s studies suggest
that only about 2/3 of students routinely quiz themselves and majority of bthe students only one time for
upcoming exams.
Research has suggested that sleep and good memory are bed fellows. Burning midnight oil harms more
than it serves. The researchers say that at least a goodnight sleep within 30hours is needed to remember a
new task later. Science has also said that teen brains most work effectively at night. Howver the scientist
concluded that a goodnight sleep, whihch include both slow wave and REM (Rapid Eye Movement)
sleep, produces the most effective performances.
What matters is not late night studying or early dawn studying just before the exams, but its about how
srudents benefits himself through any type of reading. So long as its benefitd him, he can continue with
the particular style of studying, but an individual should take care his/her health is not deteriorated as
health is supreme here. A student cant do anything he/she wants to do if he/she has a poor halth.
Nagaraju (2004) pointed that, for good acadmis success good study habits and attitudes are important.
Hence, it is imperative and desirable that a probe into the pattern of study habits and attitudes of students
be made.
Studies have shown that learning new informations in different environments, at varying noise levels and
even mood states, can significantly improve a students ability to recall that same information when test
day comes.

3. Time management
4. Improving Concentration
5. Setting Particular time and place
6.Refreshing topic in memory often
Poor study habits means sub standard study habits. Good study habits are then only ways, which through
academic excellence could be attained. There is no short cut to academic success than to study hard and
appropriately. Most students today are are found guilty pf poor study habits. They do not study enough to
make them achieve remarkable academic success in life.
Statement of the Hypothesis
Poor habits of study have a detrimental impact on students' academic performance, increasing the risk of
academic underachievement, decreasing grades, and decreasing recall of the content.
Scope and Limitations
This study is looking at how undergraduate learners at a certain school perform academically when they
have bad study habits. It is going to focus on recognizing typical bad study habits such procrastination,
poor time management, and poor study methods. To find out if bad study habits affect grades,
questionnaires will be used to gather quantitative data, and academic records will be examined.
1. Study habits: The research is going to focus on an existing list of bad study habits, possibly ignoring
additional elements that could have an impact on academic achievement.
2. Academic performance measures: Grades will be the primary measure of achievement in school used
in the study, with other variables like student happiness or involvement being ignored.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant because good education is the bed rock of any success. An educated is the
enlightened mind. This study show the effect of poor study habits to students in Looc National High
School. It is hope that this study will provide information for government, teachers, parents , school
administraitors , agencies , students communities to reflect upon various factors that can help students in
achieving their academic goals they can investigate the possibility of introducing the factors to the
school, which may consequently lead to enhancing students educational outcomes in Schools.
