Prosodic features are features that appear when

as important to teach learners prosodic features as

successful communication depends as much on

intonation, stress and rhythm as on the correct
pronunciation of sounds.

Thank you.

So class I have here different features of speech

Everyone Please read.

Pitch

 The degree of highness and lowness in the

tone of a person.

 Voice will rise when we are asking

questions which are answerable by Yes or
No.
 Sentences beginning with WH- and H
questions like What, Where, Who, When,
and How end in falling pitch.

Example: I am so happy.
Who are you?

So how about Intonation can you please read___.

Intonation

 The way a person’s voice raises and lowers

depending on what they are talking about.
 In alternative with or the rising of the voice
is used for alternative in the final one.

Three main pattern of Intonation

[Link] intonation
 Describes how the voice falls on the final
stressed syllable of a phrase or a group of
words. A falling intonation is very common
in wh-questions.

Example:
Where’s the nearest p↘ost-office?
What time does the film f↘inish?

 We also use falling intonation when we say

something definite, or when we want to be
very clear about something:

Example:
I think we are completely l↘ost.
OK, here’s the magaz↘ine you wanted.

[Link] intonation
 Describes how the voice rises at the end of
a sentence.
 Rising intonation is common in

yes-no questions:
Example:
I hear the Health Centre is expanding. So, is that
the new d↗octor?
Are you th↗irsty?

Fall-rise intonation

 Fall-rise intonation describes how the voice

falls and then rises. We use fall-rise
intonation at the end of statements when
we want to say that we are not sure, or
when we may have more to add:

Example:
*I do↘n’t support any football team at the
m↘om↗ent. (but I may change my mind in future).
*It rained every day in the firs↘t w↗eek. (but things
improved after that).

 We use fall-rise intonation with questions,

especially when we request information or
invite somebody to do or to have
something. The intonation pattern makes
the questions sound more polite:

Example:
*Is this your cam↘er↗a?
Would you like another co↘ff↗ees?

So let us proceed to stress which is

Stress

 The emphasis on a syllables or word.

If the word is Noun, the stress is in the beginning.
If the word was used as Verb, the stress must be at
the end.

Example:
Add-ress Add-ress
Sus- pect Sus- pect
Take note: The vowel are being emphasize not
consonants.

Juncture

 Use the slant lines (/) indicate pausing

One slant lines (/) –short pause

Two slant lines (//) –Long pause
Octothorpe (#)- Stop or Period

accident.)

Achievements come only to those /who are

unafraid // to those have courage / to exert their
strength power / against countless obstacles // and
have the guts and determination to accomplish
/what they have started to do.#

Rate of speech

 Speed of speaking in words per minute

from slow to fast.
 Important words are lengthened;
unimportant words are shortened.

Slow To Slow Rapid Too

Speech Speech Speech Rapid

Calmness Laziness Excitemen Fear
Acceptanc Dullness t Nervous

Volume

 Refers to how loud or soft your voice is. As

with speaking rate, you want to avoid the extremes
of being too loud or too soft, but still vary your
volume within an acceptable middle range.

Example:
I love Pizza.
The pen in the table is red.
I don’t think that’s one.

 The strength of speaking or singing

whereby the human voice is used powerfully and
clearly.

When the director said “Say it LOUDERR!”
The actors and actresses will speak louder.
