LESSON PLAN for Grade 9 ENGLISH

(First Quarter: Week 2)

PROGRAM STANDARD : The learner demonstrates communicative competence


through his/her understanding of literature and other texts
types for deeper appreciation of Philippine Culture and those
of other countries.
GRADE LEVEL STANDARD : The learner demonstrates communicative competence
through his/her understanding of British-American
Literature, including Philippine literature and other types for
a deeper appreciation of Philippine culture and those of the
other countries.
CONTENT STANDARD : The learner demonstrates understanding of how Anglo-
American literature and other types of serve as means of
enhancing the self. Also, how to use processing, assessing,
summarizing information, word derivation and formation
strategies, appropriate word order, punctuation marks and
interjections to enable him/her to participate actively in
speech choir.
PERFORMANCE STANDARD : The learner actively participates in a speech choir through
using effective verbal and non- verbal strategies based on the
following criteria: Focus, Voice, Delivery, Facial
Expressions, Body Movements/Gestures and Audience
Contact.
Learning Competencies: ENG9V-Ib-1: Provide words or expressions appropriate for
given situation.

I. Objectives
At the end of the discussion, the students are expected to:
Define gerund and gerund phrase;
Develop appropriate group processing skills as they verbalize their
thinking and discussing the functions of gerund and gerund phase
through a skill;
Locate the gerunds or gerund phrases in a sentence; and
Identify the different uses of gerund or gerund phrases.

III. Procedure

A. Preliminary Activities

 Opening Prayer

 The teacher will instruct the students to stand and call someone to lead
the prayer.

(Before the teacher will allow the students to set down, everyone is
instructed to pick up some pieces of trashes and align/arrange the
chairs properly.)

 Greetings
The teacher will greet everybody with happy disposure and the
students will do the same.
 Checking of Attendance
 Class Rules

1. Listen to Teacher’s instruction


2. Raise your hand if you want to answer.
3. Speak one by one. Don’t talk when someone is standing and
speaking
4. No unnecessary movements. No standing and transferring of
chairs.
5. No bullying.
6. Don’t laugh when your classmates got the wrong answer.
7. Throw your garbage to the trash can properly.

 Checking of Assignments
 The teacher will instruct the students to get their English assignment
notebook. Students for each two rows will have to pass their papers
clockwise for checking of assignments. Right after, they have to pass their
assignments counter clockwise to return them to the owners.
Developmental Activities
 Review
 The teacher will call someone to tell what the previous lesson was all about.
Then the teacher will call the attention of the reluctant students and
encourage them to stand, speak and give some points of view from the
previous topic.

B. Motivation

 The teacher will present a 1 box and inside of the box has strips of paper
action words are written on it.
 The teacher will call 6 students to volunteer for the activity. They will
instruct to pick 1 strip of paper inside the box and right after they will act it
in front of the class. Their classmates will guess what they are doing. After
guessing the action word, they will use it in a sentence.
Actions to be performed by the students:
planting drawing
dancing reading
singing writing

 The teacher will ask the following:


 What do you notice about the words?
 What do you call a word that is derived from a verb?
 What names do we give a verbal ending in -ing?

Presentation of Objectives and Lesson


“Gerunds” – are verb that end in –ing but functions as nouns.
Form of Gerund – verb + ing
Examples: work + ing = working
study + ing = studying
swim + ing = swimming

Examples of the different uses of gerunds:


 Subject
 Direct Object
 Subjective Complement
 Object of Preposition
 Gerund can be as subject, direct object, subject of preposition and subjective
complement.

1. SUBJECT

Volleyball is my favorite sport.


Single word noun

Swimming is my favorite sport.


Gerund
Swimming three times a week is good for you.
Gerund phrase

2. DIRECT OBJECT
We thoroughly enjoy volleyball.
Single word noun

We thoroughly enjoy swimming.


Gerund

We thoroughly enjoy swimming three times a week.

3. SUBJECTIVE COMPLEMENT

My favorite food is spaghetti.


Single word noun

My favorite exercise is jogging.


Gerund

My favorite exercise is jogging around the compound.

4. OBJECT OF PREPOSITION

Donny takes pleasure in basketball.

Single word noun

Donny takes pleasure in biking.


Gerund

Donny takes pleasure in biking three miles a day.

 Gerund Phrases- a group of words consisting of a gerund and its modifier is and
or objects.

Example:
She enjoyed blowing large bubbles.

A. Activity
“Activity Skit”

 The Teacher will instruct students to group into two. Then teacher will give five
minutes for students to review their notes about gerunds. After exactly 5 minutes,
they will keep their notes.
Directions: Discuss the function of gerund and gerund phrase and present it
through a skit. You have 10 minutes to complete the activity.

Criteria:
Content - 10 points
Grammar - 5 points
Cooperation - 5 points
20 points
B. Analysis

 The teacher will ask the students the following questions:

 What is gerund? Can you also give the different uses of gerund?

- A gerund is a verb form ending in -ing and used as noun.


Like an ordinary single- word noun, it may be used as a

 Direct Object
 Subjective Complement
 Object of Preposition
 How important is the use of gerunds in constructing sentences?
- Students answer may vary.

C. Abstractions

 The teacher will discuss the following


 Gerund – ing form of the verb
 Explanation of gerund for better understanding
 Encourage students to have more examples of gerund and use them
in a sentence.

D. Applications

 The Teacher will divide the class into three groups by counting off.
Then the teacher will show words to the class then they will use them in sentences
using gerund form of the verb on a one whole sheet of paper.

Correctness of the answer = 20 points

I. Direction: On a one whole sheet of paper copy each sentence with a gerund
form from the word before the sentence. (1 point each)

magazines that used gerund or gerund phrases in their sentences.
