History of skirts

1880s 1900s
Between the 1880s
and the 1900s, not
much changed.
You can see that in
the 1990s there
were still just as
many details,
however the
details are simpler,
being things such
as lace and buttons
rather than big
frills and bows

Between the 19000s and the 1920s, there was quite a significant change in
silhouette and colour. In the 1920s people experimented more with different
colours and styles, giving each skirt their own personality
1920s 1930s
In the 1930s more
people were
playing around
with pleats and
buttons, giving
these skirts their
simple yet
symbolic shape,
whereas in the
1920s the focus
was more on
different colours
and hues.
History of skirts
There were not many significant differences between skirts in the 1930s and the
1940s. The skirts kept a very similar pattern and colour palette, however, you can
see the silhouette of an a-line skirt becoming more popular.
1940s 1950s
As you can see,
between the 1940s
and 1950s, the a-line
skirt was still on
trend yet, you can
see more of a
difference in the
colours most
commonly used
along with using
more buttons rather
than bows to avoid
that super feminine
look
In the 1960s came the invention of the mini skirt, more patterns and different
silhouettes. Skirts were styled with more simple t-shirts or tank tops to draw
attention to the skirts and other accessories such as sunglasses and bags.
1960s There was not one 1970s
specific length of
skirt that was
trending in the 70s
people still liked the
idea of the mini skirt
making its
revelation. Skirts
were still styled with
more simple
silhouetted tops,
more patterns were
introduced to
compliment or
contrast the skirts.
History of skirts
Mini skirts have had their time and now it’s time for the midi skirt. The 80s
introduced the midi skirt, made in all sorts of pastel colours and with intricate
details such as pleats.
1980s 1990s
In the 1990s
everyone was
playing around with
their own style. You
could walk the
streets and find
skirts of all lengths
and styles. People
took inspiration
from any decade
from the 50s to the
70s and even back
to the 20s.
With the 2000s came the invention of the micro skirt, an even shorter version of
the mini skirt. The most popular fabric was denim in all sorts of colours giving
fashion a more industrial style and edgy look.
2000s 2020s
From the 2000s to
the 2020s people
have been playing
around more with
patterns and styles,
fusing different
ideas from the past
century together
with their own
“2020s twist” on
them. Pockets,
pleats, slits; you
name it, we’ve
thought of it.
