®
FENOTEC 5010
An ester cured alkaline phenolic resin binder .

General description FENOTEC 5010 is a two-part cold set binder system consisting of FENOTEC
5010 - A PF resin binder and Ester based HARDENER .

FENOTEC 5010 can be used for making medium to large moulds and cores
using batch as well as continuous mixers. It is amenable for flaskless moulding
on fast loop moulding lines.

An alloy at any temperature can be cast using moulds and cores bonded by
FENOTEC 5010 binder system.

Purpose
FENOTEC 5010 combines the environment advantages associated with
inorganic binder systems while retaining most of the technical
benefits associated with organic binders.

FENOTEC 5010 offers advantage of low fume emission at mixing and

pouring stations, unlike acid set phenolic and furan systems.

FENOTEC 5010 produces metallurgically sound castings. It

minimises/eliminates defects like fins, hot tears, scabs etc. due to its excellent high temperature
properties that are superior to those obtainable with alkyd, acid set
phenolic or furan.
Benefits
1. Sound castings -FENOTEC 5010 produces castings with minimal fins &
hot tears.

2. High productivity - FENOTEC 5010 offers rapid strength development

and faster strip, enhancing productivity.

3. No pungent smell - FENOTEC 5010 does not emanate pungent

fumes at mixing and casting stages, making the working
environment safer and cleaner.

4. Tolerance to basic sands - FENOTEC 5010 can be used to bond

any common moulding sand, including sands of high basicity such
as olivine.
Instructions for use
1. Chose a washed and graded sand of AFS 50-60 (ADV 2-3
Max. & clay 0.2-0.5% Max.).

2. Select appropriate HARDENER suitable to achieve desired bench

life ( BL ) and strip times (ST).
3. Add HARDENER to the sand and mix for 1 - 1½ minutes, add
FENOTEC 5010 and mix for another 1 - 1 1/2 minutes.

Temperature :28 - 32 ° C
Relative Humidity :60 - 65 %

In case of Intensive continuos sand mixers are used follow the

calibration guidelines given by the Equipment supplier to ensure the correct
addition level of Fenotec and Hardener.

Hardener selection table

HARDENER BENCH LIFE STRIP TIME
GRADE (at 30 Deg C) (at 30 Deg C)
H720 3 - 4 Minutes 12 - 15 Minutes
H740 4 - 6 Minutes 15 - 25 Minutes
H760 6 - 8 Minutes 25 - 40 Minutes
H780 10- 12 Minutes 70 - 100 Minutes
H800 12 - 16 Minutes 120-160 Minutes

The above bench life and strip time values are typical values,
however actual bench lives and strip times may vary with ambient conditions, sand
quality, core / mould pattern intricacy and type of mixer .

4. The typical addition levels are :

FENOTEC 5010 : 1.2 - 2.0 % based on sand weight.
HARDENER : 20 - 25% based on resin weight.( (
Hardener grade to be selected based on above table)

Addition level depend on the quality of Sand and the mixing

equipment being used . Typical addition level for silica sand of
different regions are given below * :-
Cochin Sand : 1.2 % - 1.4 %
Mangalore / Gudur Sand : 1.6 % - 1.8 %
Allahabad Sand : 1.8 % - 2.0 %
* The above are to be used as guidelines , actual addition levels
needs to be accessed considering various factors such as
casting type , mixer equipment and geometry of castings etc.

5. Fill the core boxes with the mixed sand quickly. Filling should be
completed well within bench life to ensure good quality cores and
moulds. Due to the nature of the curing mechanism, the mould
or core surface is not as smooth as those obtainable with alkyd
binders. However, this will not lead to any adverse effects on
casting quality.

Typical Strength values

Sand (AFS : 45-50) : 100 parts (washed Gudur sand )
FENOTEC 5010 : 1.8 % based on sand
HARDENER H-720 : 20 % based on resin

Self life & Storage
FENOTEC 5010 has a shelf life of 3 months when stored in a
covered area without exposure to sun light at a temperature of
around 30° C. However, cold storage facility is necessary when
the binder needs to be stored at temperatures higher than 35° C.
Under cold storage conditions of 10-15 °C the shelf life can be
extended by 1 month when kept after 10-15 days of manufacture.

HARDENER has a shelf life of 12 months when stored in a covered

area & at a temperature of around 30° C
Precautions
1. In case of -
a) Contact with skin : Wash with soap water.
b) Contact with eyes : Wash out thoroughly with
water and consult eye
specialist immediately.

c) Spillage : Do not flush with water, which

can contaminate the sewage.
Cover the spillage with sand or
saw dust and dispose of the
waste at recommended
disposal site

2. While handling Resin, Hardener & Mixed sand, it is recommended

to use protective wearing such as aprons, gloves, goggles.
