PART 3

Questions 19 to 26
You are going to read an extract from a novel. For questions 19 to 26, choose the correct
answer (A, B, C or D) and mark the correct letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet.

I looked around the dark messy room. There was a pair of deer antlers and a huge mirror on
the wall. But a strange object hanging in the middle of the wall attracted my attention. It
was black and stood out clearly against a square of red silk. Feeling curious, I went up to it.
For a moment. I was taken aback. It was a human hand! It was black, dried and had yellow
fingernails.

I could see the muscles and patches of dried blood, which looked like dirt. I was sure that
the hand had been chopped off at about the middle of the arm and it looked like it was done
with an axe. A big chain was fixed to the hand on one end and the other end was attached to
the wall by a ring big enough to hold a big animal.

I asked in a shocked voice. "Where did you get this?" Sir John replied calmly. "That's my
worst enemy. From America. There it was chopped off with a sword and after the skin had
been removed, it was dried in the sun for a week till it became what it is now."

Intrigued by it. I put out my hand to touch the hand. It looked like it had belonged to a
giant. The fingers were unusually long and were held in place by muscles I was thinking
that it was rather a frightening sight, so I recoiled a little.

"The man who chopped this off must have been very strong." I remarked, wanting to know
more about the hand and its history. "Oh yes. But I am stronger than he was. I fixed the chain
on the hand to prevent it from escaping," he said with a grin. "But why do you need to chain
it? It definitely can't run away. It's a dead hand." Sir John said again, this time in a serious
tone. "Oh no. t will run away if I do not chain it."

I looked at his face to see whether he was joking. However, I had never seen a more serious
face. It made me wonder if he was not feeling sane that day. After all, what he said did not
make any sense. After that incident, I did not see Sir John again. A whole year had passed.
Then one morning towards the end of November, my servant woke me up with the news that
Sir John had been murdered during the night. I jumped out of bed, got dressed quickly and
soon, I was on my way to Sir John's residence. Along the journey there. I was wondering
who would have murdered Sir John.

Half an hour later, I was in his house. The police captain was already there talking to the
servants. I introduced myself and went into the room where the hand was hung. My instincts
told me that the murder was connected with the hand. When I entered t room, the first thing I
saw was the body of Sir John lying on its back in the middle of the floor. I could see that his
waistcoat and jacket had been torn. This suggested that a violent struggle had taken place.
8
The captain told me. "He had been choked to death. You can tell from his black and swollen face.
Look here. His neck is covered with five holes and there is blood all over. They look as though they
were made by sharp points of iron. He could have been choked to death by fingers of bone."

On hearing those words, I turned to look at the wall where the terrible hand had hung a year ago.
But it was no longer there. The chain had been broken and was hanging down limply. My first
thought was "Where has it gone to?" and this was replaced by another much frightening thought,
"Who is the new owner, and would the same terrible fate await him?" Deep in thought. I left Sir
John's residence to find the answers to my questions.

PART 4

Questions 27 to 32

You are going to read a newspaper article about a man who drives a special truck. Six
sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A – H the one
which fits each gap (27 – 32). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to
use.

Mark your answers on the separate answer sheet.

The longest truck in the world

In the outback of Australia, Jeremy Hart hitched a ride on the Centipede.

‘If I take my foot off the accelerator, it’ll take us about four kilometres to stop,’ says Matt
Langley, the Australian captain of the Centipede, which, at approximately 54.5 metres, and
consisting of a driver’s cab and six trailers, is claimed to be the world’s longest truck. Matt
has a delicate touch. His hands, on the 60 cm steering wheel, control a million dollars’ worth
of trailers carrying zinc ore.

One false move on the narrow 128-km road from McArthur River Mine, the world’s largest
zinc mine, to the port at Bing Bong and the Centipede, with its 110 wheels, would crash.
However, in two years of delivering valuable loads of powdered zinc ore from mine to coast,
the truck has had only one accident. 27

I asked him about the job. ‘The hardest thing is the concentration. The road is really
boring and in places it is a bit rough. One problem is the fact that you are pulling six huge
trailers behind you.
28 I’d hate that to happen to me.

Almost 60 metres ahead of the last trailer, high above the road in the air-conditioned comfort
of Matt’s cab, you can lose almost all sense of pulling 130 tonnes of raw material. X29x
29 xx
This movement is repeated down the length of the Centipede. Matt is in control but you can
see it takes a real effort

In this most remote northern corner of Australia, traffic is not a problem for Matt and his co-
driver, Mick Webster. ‘Some days we don’t see another vehicle on the run to Bing Bong, but
when we do, we try to be as courteous as possible,’ says Matt. 30 ‘ x30x xx In any case, some
are too scared to try. Others think this is just a normal-sized vehicle with two or three trailers
attached. When they see it’s six, they either back off or go by us with their mouths wide
open.’

The truck is breaking new ground in technology. The Northern Territory government had
to change the regulations to legalise the Centipede for road use
. ‘31x31x x They’re sealed with
covers to prevent ore dust from polluting the environment, and they have a special loading
and off-loading device.
11
It took just under two hours, in a temperature of 40 degrees, to crawl at no more than 64 kph
from McArthur Mine to Bing Bong. X32x 32 x

On arrival at his destination Matt punched a button to unload the zinc onto the floor of the
huge cyclone-proof warehouse where it is kept before being shipped to Europe and Asia. It
didn’t look like much. ‘When you see how small a full load looks when it’s unloaded onto the
floor of the warehouse, it’s very frustrating,’ he says. ‘So you can see why we don’t use
smaller trailers for the job.’ I asked him how he enjoyed the job. ‘I wouldn’t do anything else,
mate,’ was his reply.

A The great thing they’ve done with this truck is to redesign the trailers carrying the ore
at the back.

B Then, as it hits a rough patch of road, the Canadian-built truck bounces up and down
like a Wild West rodeo star.

C I also shared my experience with other drivers.

D ‘That’s not bad, considering this truck does about 320,000 km a year between the mine
and the port, running about five return trips a day,’ says Matt as we pull out of McArthur
Mine.

E I sometimes stop for a rest along the way and then get going again.

F Though we risk turning over if we move over too far to let them pass.

G Once, one of the drivers lost control just for a moment, and two of them turned over.

H ‘You can imagine, at that speed, I’ve come to know every bit of this road,’ says Matt.
