VISITS SEOUL NATIONAL UNIVERSITY TO DISCUSS
COLLABORATION OPPORTUNITIES
On Monday, June 24, 2024, the International Office (IO), Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) conducted a
visit to the Office of International Affairs (OIA) at Seoul National University (SNU), South Korea. The
delegation from UNHAS was represented by Saaduddin, M.Sc., a Task Force member in the IO
UNHAS Division of International Students and Visa. He was warmly received by Ms. Sunju Park,
Director of International Education Partnership/Agreement, Ms. Moonkyung Baik, Manager of
Scholarships for Exchange Students (In/Outbound), and Ms. Jinsol Maeng, Manager of Scholarships
for International Students.
During this meeting, several key topics were discussed, including the initiation of cooperation
between UNHAS and SNU, student exchanges, and scholarships. The meeting began with an
introduction to UNHAS by Saaduddin. In his presentation, he highlighted that UNHAS is one of the
top 10 universities in Indonesia with a vision and mission related to the maritime continent. He
added that UNHAS, located in Makassar, is strategically positioned near the new capital city on
Kalimantan Island, the Spermonde Archipelago, the Wallacea region, and the Maros-Pangkep
Geopark, renowned for its karst landscape. Concluding his presentation, he emphasized that UNHAS
2 is currently striving to enhance its international reputation through its internationalization programs.
A key effort in this regard is increasing collaborations with the top 200 universities globally, with SNU
being a prime target, ranked #31 in the QS World University Rankings 2025.
The meeting continued with a discussion on initiating cooperation between the two universities. Ms.
Sunju Park explained that currently, SNU is limiting the establishment of university-level
Memorandums of Understanding (MoU). However, SNU allows for bottom-up collaboration, which
can start at the grassroots level, such as laboratories. Each college and department, down to
individual laboratories, can establish research and staff exchange collaborations. The financial and
technical aspects can vary according to the policies of each party. In contrast, student exchanges
requiring credit transfer necessitate a university-level MoU due to the involvement of multiple
divisions, such as the academic division, inbound student office, and visa management. Ms.
Moonkyung Baik added that if the student exchange does not span a full semester and does not
require credit transfer, a faculty or departmental level MoU would suffice. Following this, Ms. Jinsol
Maeng mentioned that SNU currently has an open application for the Graduate Scholarship for
Foreign Students (GSFS) Program for Spring 2025. She suggested that UNHAS students might be
interested in this opportunity. Additionally, she noted that SNU offers various other scholarships,
such as the SNU President Fellowship (SPF) for Ph.D. programs. The brief meeting with the OIA SNU
holds the promise of paving the way for future collaborations between UNHAS and SNU.

GEOPHYSICS DEPARTMENT LECTURER CONDUCTS
BENCHMARKING RESEARCH COLLABORATION AT KOREA
UNIVERSITY'S COASTAL HYDRODYNAMIC LABORATORY
From June 24 to June 28, 2024, a faculty member from the Department of Geophysics, faculty of
Mathematic and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Saaduddin, M.Sc., embarked, on a Benchmarking
Research Collaboration at the Coastal Hydrodynamic Laboratory, part of the School of Civil,
Environmental, and Architectural Engineering at Korea University. The collaboration was led by Prof.
Sangyoung Son, Ph.D., the head of the laboratory, whose research primarily focuses on coastal
modeling, including tsunami modeling.
This collaborative effort involved not only Prof. Sangyoung Son but also all the students he
supervises, spanning undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels. The activities carried out during
this period included group discussions, laboratory visits, individual consultations, and an internal
seminar. The visit aimed to outline potential future research collaborations, which include: coupled
modeling of tsunamis, wave-current interaction models, prediction of morphological processes
associated with tsunami-induced currents, tsunami-induced maritime hazards, and storm surge
inundation models. Additionally, discussions were held on other potential academic activities that
could be jointly conducted, such as: guest lectures and joint workshops.
4 Regarding the formalization of these collaborations through documents such as MoUs for MoAs,
intensive communication with Korea University's Office of International Affairs (OIA) is necessary, as
this division handles international collaborations and partnerships. This visit marked a significant
step in strengthening research ties and fostering academic exchange between the two institutions,
promising a fruitful collaboration in the realm of coastal and tsunami modeling.

HASANUDDIN UNIVERSITY SIGNS THE MEMORANDUM OF
UNDERSTANDING WITH THE GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY,
AUSTRALIA
Griffith University (GU) in Australia and Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) expanded their collaboration
in the sectors of academia and research. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on
Tuesday, July 9, 2024, in the UNHAS Rector's meeting room in Makassar to commemorate this
occasion. The two institutions' signature of this Memorandum of Understanding marked a significant
turning point in their efforts to broaden their collaboration network internationally and to increase
the breadth of their academic and research collaboration. This meeting was attended by Prof. Dr.
Eng. Adi Maulana, S.T., M.Phil (Vice Rector for Partnership, Innovation, Entrepreneurship and
Business) , Ansariadi, Ph.D ( Director of Partnership), and Khairuddin, Ph.D (International Office Task
Force), from UNHAS. Meanwhile, from GU were Lucinda Chappell (Regional Marketing Director
Southeast Asia & Pacific and Dony Vernianto (In country Manager Indonesia).
Prof. Dr. Eng Adi Maulana stated that this cooperation enhances academic cooperation and raises
the standard of instruction that helps colleagues address regional and international challenges in 5
the domains of research and education. "This collaboration not only aims at improving the quality
and relevance of research, but also to open new opportunities for student and lecturer exchanges,"
he said.
UNHAS intends to fortify global networks and make a major contribution to the advancement of
science and technology through this partnership. Prof. Adi further emphasized the significance of
this partnership in terms of giving instructors and students chances to broaden their global
experience. He stated, "It is hoped that they can broaden their academic horizons and increase
cross-cultural understanding with this exchange."
He claimed that in addition to the direct benefits to individuals, this also has the potential to provide
new discoveries and technologies that could significantly advance society. The range of collaboration
specified in this MoU encompasses several educational and scientific endeavors, such as student
exchanges and cooperative research to enhance the caliber and pertinence of research. In a
different place, Prof. Carolyn Evans, Vice Chancellor and President of Griffith University, emphasized
the value of international cooperation in advancing academic growth and scientific research to
foster the discovery of scientific discoveries that could have a major positive influence on science as
a whole.

WELCOMES THE VISIT OF DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH/INSTITUTE
OF HISTORY, UNIVERSITEIT LEIDEN
The Department of History, Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), Hasanuddin University (UNHAS)
welcomed the visit of the Director of Research/Institute of History, Universiteit Leiden, the
Netherlands, Dr. Allicia Shrickker on Friday, July 19, 2024 at the Department office. The welcome
ceremony was led by the Head of Department of History, Dr. Ilham Daeng Makkelo and was
accompanied by the Secretary of the Department, Andi Lili Elvita, M.A. as well as Dr. Nahdia Nur and
Dr. Ida Tanjung.
After the welcome ceremony, Dr. Allicia managed to observe the Laboratory of History and Culture.
She observed the activities of students who were preparing work from Pekan Obyek Kajian Sejarah
(POKSA) or Historical Study Objects Week activity which took the theme of culinary history in Pare-
Pare City. Several documentary films produced by students and lecturers caught Alicia's attention. In
addition, She welcomed the planning of collaboration between the Department in the areas of
teaching and learning as well as research in history. Apart from that, other forms of collaboration 7
were presented, such as giving public lectures, short courses, book reviews, etc. One of the topics
discussed during the visit was the History of the Indian Ocean.
Furthermore, another topic discussed was the activity plans that were prepared by the Department
of History for this year and next year, namely the plan for an International Seminar in April 2025 to
commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Asia-Africa conference in Bandung. As well as plans for
collaboration in joint publication and preparation of an anthology book related to the theme of the
Indian Ocean. The visit ended with a photo session and token exchange.

THREE STUDENTS OF UNIVERSITAS HASANUDDIN EXPLORE
MARITIME CULTURE OF CHINA AT SHANGHAI OCEAN
UNIVERSITY
Shanghai Ocean University (ShOU) conducted its 4th Shanghai Summer School RCEP Marine Culture
International Program on June 5-27, 2024. Hasanuddin University deployed three students (two
undergraduate students of Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries and a postgraduate student from
Faculty of Cultural Sciences). They are Ahmad Aufaasikki, Nurfauzani Sangaji, and Kumara Tungga
Dewa.
This year's summer school brought together 34 students from nine countries, offering them an
immersive experience in cutting-edge marine engineering topics. The program featured engaging
outdoor excursions that significantly enhanced the participants' understanding of marine
engineering. Students underwent simulated crew training aboard the Wu Song vessel and engaged
in hands-on marine biology activities. At the Chongming Island research base for marine studies,
they gained a comprehensive understanding of aquaculture processes. Additionally, a visit to the
China Maritime Museum offered profound insights into the development of China’s maritime
culture.

The program also included a rich array of cultural activities aimed at deepening the students'
appreciation of traditional Chinese culture. These activities included calligraphy, traditional Chinese
painting, gu zheng (a traditional Chinese musical instrument) lessons, and dragon boat racing.
Moreover, they also forged connections with peers from around the world and learned the
importance of cross-cultural communication through collaborative projects. The representatives of
Indonesia also had a chance to present the country, in a series of information ranging from the
geography, the demography, to the cultural diversity of Indonesia.
