LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

GEOMETRY OF SHAPES and SIZE: SPACE FIGURES

Content Standard: Demonstrates understanding of key concepts of geometry of shapes and

sizes, and geometric relationships.

Background Information for Learners

Space figures are figures whose points do not all lie in the same plane. In this Learning
Activity Sheet, we'll study the polyhedron, the cylinder, the cone, and the sphere.
Polyhedrons are space figures with flat surfaces, called faces, which are made
of polygons. Prisms and pyramids are examples of polyhedrons.
Cylinders, cones, and spheres are not polyhedrons, because they have curved, not flat,
surfaces. A cylinder has two parallel, congruent bases that are circles. A cone has one circular
base and a vertex that is not on the base. A sphere is a space figure having all its points an
equal distance from the center point.

Learning Competency with Code

1. Identifies the nets of the following space figures: cube, prism, pyramid, cylinder,
cone, and sphere using plane figures.
2. Visualizes and describes the different solid figures: cube, prism, pyramid, cylinder,
cone, and sphere.

Directions:
Perform and study the different activities below to know more about space figures.

Activity 1: Read the following statements. Draw the space figure being describe in each
statement. Then identify what space figure is describe in each situation.

This is ME Draw ME and Identify ME

1. I am a polyhedron
I have four faces, six edges and
four vertices

2. I belong to the family of

polyhedron
I have two congruent parallel
faces called bases
My other faces are
parallelograms which connect
the corresponding sides of the
bases.
3. I am the most familiar type of
right prism
I am bounded by rectangles
whose corners are right angles
4. I am a member of a polyhedron
with a polygon as base and
triangles as my lateral faces
They can name me according to
the shape of my base
5. I am a solid figure very similar
to a prism
My bases are two congruent
circles on parallel planes

6. I am a solid bounded by a circle.

All my line segments joining
each point of my circle to a fixed
point not in the plane of the
circle called the vertex
7. I am a set of all points in space
which are equidistant from a
fixed point called the center

In the activity above, we identified the different space figures. A polyhedron is

a solid bounded by flat polygonal surfaces which are also called the faces. Faces
intersect at line segments called edges. (refer to the illustration below)

The activity above illustrates the following ideas about space figures

1. Space figures are geometric figures which are three dimensional.

2. A polyhedron is a solid bounded by flat surfaces that form polygonal regions.
3. A prism is a polyhedron whose bases are congruent and parallel, and whose lateral
faces are parallelogram regions
4. The surfaces on the three dimensional solid are flat surfaces called faces. These
faces are polygonal regions and the line segments where the faces intersect are
called edges.
o A segment from a point in one base perpendicular to the plane of the other
base is an altitude of the prism. A prism is a right prism if the lateral edges
are perpendicular to the planes of the base.
o A prism is named after the shape of its base.
▪ Triangular prism
▪ Right rectangular prism
▪ Pentagonal prism
5. A pyramid is a polyhedron in which all lateral faces are triangular regions that meet
in a common point called vertex.
6. A cylinder is a solid with congruent bases in a pair of parallel circular regions.
7. A cone is a solid with a vertex and a base. Its base is a circular region.
